Panasonic DMR-BCT820EG 3D Blu-ray recorder 1TB (Twin-HD, DVB-C tuner, HDMI, CI +, HbbTV, WLAN, USB) (Electronics)

Customer Review

After the many positive reviews here, I have the unit also gained me ... and I'm a little disappointed! If not yet a miracle happens, I'll give it back. As so often with All-in-One devices: the manufacturer tries to bring together as many areas in a single device, but then fails to cover each area also full. The Pana is really good in some areas, but bring me unfortunately also a lot of limitations in comparison to my current constellation ...

The Pana should replace both a Technisat HDK2 twin receiver with 500 GB hard drive, as well as my good Yamaha Blu-Ray Player with me. Aufzuzeichen two shipments while viewing another so is nothing new for me. Nor an excellent Blu-ray image.
I had hoped for from the Panasonic clearly tangible benefits or at least taught a consistent state, but unfortunately I was better of it because I do with the device almost only regressed ...

Positv at Pana:
- Optics: the device is really quite chic and simple (unfortunately plastic). The blue light on the front I turned off because they bother me while watching television.
- The noise: the operation is not to hear the device almost! (A couple of drive noise when reading is normal)
- Picture and sound are good, but here I am experiencing no improvement because they were with me in advance already.
- Readout of the discs is OK (that's one of the points on which I would improve myself) .. 'ne Blu Ray but also takes time; approx. 30+ seconds a speed Price gains not the device; cometh's me but not so depends.
- Fast forward and rewind work when Pana precise than my Technisat
- The initial installation is quick and easy
- Moving channels and favorites lists mooring quite good and easy, though not quite stable (see below)!
- Device boots very quickly (10s), with quick start much faster.
- No CI + LIMITATIONS with my cable provider
- Stream on Ipad's works easily and in high quality (without any judder)
- DVDs are wonderful extrapolated, the picture can be seen!
- I had only 1 unit standing there instead of 2

What I might seam:

When I open the program guide for the first time, everything came to me already suspicious known. 10 years ago I had already analog Panasonic DVD recorder with hard disk ... and everything looked almost identical from! Would not matter, but unfortunately confirms the suspicion that it is not only looks like 10 years ago, but still has almost the same technical level. A device for clicking fetishists!

- The Guide gives an unfortunately only one, fairly rough and confusing Overview (and with truncated titles)! I can not change the view and for me. B. Select a program separately, to display my program the next few days for this program in the Guide. I can not enter there time, from which I would like to have a display but must hinnavigieren quite slow and cumbersome for this day and time; there's need a lot of patience. Example: if I want to set a timer for the evening 20:15 clock in the morning at 10 clock, I click the Guide kidding about 27 times to the right. Alternatively, 1 x yellow on (+ 24) and then 30 times to the left. Is not that annoying? By comparison, the old device I choose the Program view (1 click), flip one page forward (max 2 clicks.) And am where I want to go. Or just giving time 20:15 clock a! Those are now common features that I miss, as we use them today frequently. We find the Pana-EPG very unstructured and confusing. Infinitely tedious.

- A search function in the guide? There is not any! What if I do not know on which channel and at what day my program will be broadcast? Then I flip through everything slowly (how many times can I click 100?)? With Technisat example I can search the entire TV guide for the week for keywords! So I find it fast if and when a program is repeated again. A function "record all the episodes?" - Also does not register!

- An absolute no-go for me: if recording is in progress, most of the functions are disabled in the menu and can not perform! This has been disturbed enormously me 10 years ago and is today still obviously so, but only at Panasonic! Although my Technisat has then also a few usage restrictions, but not to this extent.

- When I look at an ongoing or completed recording and it 'almost forwarde', then I do not have a visual display, at which position the recording I start, where do I go by my fast-forward and how much rest time after that remains of the calculated intake. I lack of progress or time bar! But I get right up a display that I vorspule just .... Yes, I know that the moment itself! To move to the progress bar, I have to press twice on 'i', then a third time to get the fade away again. The functions important to me are very hidden everywhere in the unit and can be reached only with difficulty.

- Which brings us to another issue: some impressions just stay! When I re-investing or change a timer, I get a confirmation of the change and this remains forever and disappears only after a long time away by itself? Do I have to re-click away with a Return or OK? Oh Man ...

-Comes Before every few days: the instrument signals when switching on "New channels found!" Unfortunately, it can not simply click away this message! If one does it yet, you have 2 minutes later on the screen. And over and over again. It is therefore gewzungen to undergo a 3-minute tuning, although you really just want to quickly turn on the TV ...

- Menu and user interface are not really acceptable, very nested and user-unfriendly for me. And spare part of any logic: Examples? You'Re Welcome:
1) of a Return (Back) button, I expect that this delivers in every menu item has the same function, namely to bring me back a step or one menu item back. Unfortunately this button reacts at various points in the menu vary, partly so I fly completely out of the menu and then have to re-enter in the 5th sub again! Times, times ... for me is something annoying!
2) The stop button to end a running recording: I get on the hard disk in the recording in progress and I want to stop this recording: Stop button does not work here: so I land namely again in the Plan of the plate. If I go, however, from the Guide in the same recording (then that is obviously not the recording of the disc, but live TV - at TS is different), the Stop button has suddenly a completely different function: I can so that the Stop recording, even though I'm just in the live TV and not in the shot!
I must therefore remember how I got in my currently displayed TV picture, as some keys react differently depending on the entry to me. This logic, I can not follow.

So on the edge: I choose my guide from a mission which I 'getimert' have. The timer icon is a clear indication that I want to see this show. So why I do not land on the hard drive to see this mission from the beginning? No, I land in the middle of live TV and has to again manually switch to the hard disk ....

- Already had several times: I'm going to 'fast forward' in a recording. Push twice (>>) remains at almost forwarden also the sound off, that's ok. Then I press Play, playback begins, but unfortunately without sound! The stay away! It fixes the bug, by performing the same procedure again, after you have once again sound for picture.

- If I change the program from the Guide (what I do best, because I want to know where I want to go), I have to always press OK twice, until the program is also displayed. First OK for the selection of the program, second OK for the function "Display". This should have been able to solve strategic use beautiful by simply grabs the recording functions in addition to "ads" currently offered on the red button. Then the selection of the program in the Guide would also simultaneously displaying and recording all functions subject behind the red button.

- I had just a shot at running and could not change the channel. Was accordingly acknowledged with: "in two ongoing record is nothing like ..." It's also clear to me, but it did not undergo two, but definitely only one! If the device has a somewhat more minute, internal leading or trailing before / after taking a picture, the one can not visually perceive ??
[Edit] Yes, that is definitely so, just tested: first record starts 20:10 clock, the second should start 20:13 clock. Now it is 20:11 clock and I can no longer switch already ...
Running recordings that go in a few minutes to the end, are no longer even appears in the guide, even if those programs are still running currently in live TV.

- During manual resorting the channel between the image and the TV flickers my Umsortierfenster back and forth. Software problem ?? If the Pana here has its computational limits?

- Layer alternating with DVDs is clearly visible (about 1 s remains sound and picture are)

- I'm still desperately looking how can I make a recording in progress most effectively terminate and reject this equal? "Stop recording Edit Recording /" by RED button: The Guide Option I is offered. Good, then I'll take the yet !!! But Ätsch, in the next sub-menu of the button is then "Stop recording" grayed out! ?? (What's that?) And the stop button does not work here also. Intuitively, I can not get it back ... I have to (ie in LIVE TV's) press, and then key in STOP until playing the running recording? Or PROG / check and there 'Rec. stop 'button. Quite cumbersome ... and in each of the options is unfortunately saved!
When I finish a recording in progress, then I expect actually that the unit queries, what should happen with the former receiving part? "Save or Discard?". But as far as I'm here not even, it is always the same and I have stored away then manually delete it from the disk.
[Edit] Answer by Panasonic Customer: This device can not, in fact, the recording is always stored! Even though I really want to discard these same.
(Radio recordings can be the way to discard because it's off suddenly).

- Since the device will depend on W-Lan, etc. I have disturbing overlays to media libraries, weather pages in the programs - Bottom right. Does anyone know if and how the get away without taking the device from the same Wi-Fi? Mich nerves.

- Why do I find important menu items such as "Settings" until the third submenu?

- Image: a pity that there is no way in Pana, to suppress the optical imaging and fully disclose "unaufgepimpt" the video signal. The Pana-image is a little too covered for my taste artificial, the device too strong for me (ie with artificial Bildverbesserern, many find that all right) works with sharpening and contrast enhancement. For this, however, he simply has to be low adaptability to individually adjust my image (which offered, finished movie modes are not quite my cup of tea).
Well, with the AV receiver you're gonna get that then offset somewhat again, so that overall a pretty good picture (now I certainly have 3 points, so the image can be influenced. Pana, AVR and TV This has unfortunately found countless Possible combinations; capture barely).

- Overall, I feel the type of menu navigation not really thought through; it acts like 100 individual fragments cobbled together. Each fragment itself also works somehow, but an overarching logic behind it I do not find. I am doing hard for me, me with such a "mess" befriending. The developers, it is unfortunately not succeeded despite a complexity to miss the dialogue "user-friendly face". And the functions, especially in Guide and receiving area are far from up to date. Verpennt trend?

Unfortunately this means the device for me so hardly a profit; on the burner function is really not my focus! In particular, my TS just makes a lot of things better and more elaborate and in a more appropriate presentation; Therefore, it is perhaps - despite disturbing fan noise - are allowed to stay for now.

However, I must say: I'm spoiled by profession: I'm professional and substantive rules in the field of software development and then take over the quality assurance procedure; issuing the release to the public. Something user unfriendly would with me unfortunately failed ... I would want to bother with the anyone.

Of course, this assessment is my subjective opinion! I want to talk the instrument to anyone bad ... many things makes the Pana well. But some bad or even not at all. And I have no easy nowadays common features, which we have previously used frequently. I have thus somewhat devalue, an all-rounder looks to me different. But who really needs a burner with Twin-top box, is lack of supply not really have a choice!
