That part was probably times as a kit for double-digit D EOS Canons with this. And since then a lot of discussion.
I bought the part of a few years ago on ebay for the 500D of private. For 89! Should my KIT (18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS II) replace. Direct hit! If other people write, it is susceptible to dust, yet not with me yet. Also, the tube does not fall out when the camera is upside down (yet). I must shake the camera literally.
About CA's and vignetting I let myself here, not. Is just a push, no fixed focal length. Also no light giant but both the 500D and the 70D applies: stability good, AF sits almost always perfect. Thanks USM Hammer quickly!
And despite faintness the part comes relatively well clear when focusing.
The rest is Lightroom.
Bell clear images and beautiful bokeh sauscharf. Although only at f4, Circular aperture makes it.
For the 70D I have also the 18-135 STM (supposed the 17-85 USM replace) and 55-250 STM gained. The AF is also fast, but not as fast as the USM of this 17-85'er USM. And also not quite as accurate. The STM lenses demonstrate their strengths rather in the video area or from LV: silently and AF is not pumping. And thanks to AF STM auto search! (If supported by camera! For me, the 70D, but not the 500D)
Photo:
These focal lengths still my favorite for photos, Sports, Landscape or Portrait! During filming of the USM is yet to be heard. But faster than the stepper motors and meets almost always, even at Rel. bad light.
Movies:
If you like films and a body has the STM support, but should opt for a gennerell STM (eg 18-135 STM). Priced about the same league, a little more at the long end and especially AF without noise.
Alternatives:
The 15-85 USM but although half a stop more at the short end and slightly more wide costs, currently about twice. (Stand 01.12.2015: 639.00 at Amazon) but is also a good lens.
Or the EF 24-105mm 1: 4.0 L IS USM. Still a little more expensive. (Now 787.07) Cuts but not especially from the reviews for a L lens.
In this chapter I refer explicitly not on personal experience, I recapitulate here only from reviews and tests from the Internet.
My Conclusion:
I renounce the red ring. For the price one of the two aforementioned alternatives do I get the USM 17-85 AND the 18-135 STM! I have both and am in these focal lengths a good journey.
The 17-85 USM accompanied me for a long time on the 500D and for a year also on the 70D, was for me even a bargain. So far, no failures. Should it turn out again, I'd buy it for the current price (under 300) again. However, only new with warranty.
It remains my "Always top" standard zoom.
Addendum: Tip !!
Who is inexpensive even longer want:
Canon EF-S 55-250mm 1: 4-5.6 IS STM!
Studying here nix details, Just google myself afterwards, reviews on Amazon or look at Traumflieger.
Value for money: here Canon has outdone themselves!
