That I would get again in 2013 an album in the fingers, which sounds as if it had been taken in 1970: just divine. "13" is not innovative or otherwise modern. Maybe it was the influence of Rick Rubin, but perhaps also the serious illness of Tony Iommi (Queen needed only a dying Freddie Mercury to get back with Innuendo back to its original splendor) - Black Sabbath have certainly done something apart from them only a handful Bands could have done: they have made a giant step back and recorded an album that their debut album might as well have been. And I mean that in the best sense, because let's be honest: the best records of virtually all bands are (almost) always the first two or three; Then all of commercialism, fame and scheduling problems consumed more and more (almost).
The fact that the band partially quoted himself: paid. The bonds with "Black Sabbath" (End of the Beginning) and "Planet Caravan" (Zeitgeist) ensure shivers, without this to be simple recreations. Umterm line is here a fantastic piece of music that is üerschüttet rightly praise. One has to be extremely blunt, not to recognize the cumulative, contagious enthusiasm that suggests a contrary here.
As a guitarist myself is, moreover, the guitar playing of Tony Iommi particularly dear: of course he could after losing two fingertips never reach the technical complexity of many other guitarists. But he has something that's going to allerallermeisten: own voice. Iommi riffs are nunmal Iommi riffs, his solos certainly not stunning but absolutely unique. One would see him in the dark simply because of his style, even if he "Alle Jahre wieder" were the best. And what I am particularly excited that he absolutely unspent sounds on "13"; exactly like in 1970 precisely.
One could say that "13" a cornucopia of positive energy pours out, but that would be too esoteric 1. and 2. would not fit to Black Sabbath. Or maybe just yet ...? ;-)
One serious shortcoming that also leads to the deduction of points, is the sound: the material is completely totkomprimiert, perhaps one of the greatest disasters in my CD rack. The only remedy: turn down the bass and lower middle solid (preferably with foobar via CD-Rip), then it goes halfway. Schade ... :-(
