It is a very good lens - sharp, high speed, faster autofocus, robust and flexible. Through the zoom factor of only 1.5, it is of course almost a fixed focal length lens. One can not even quickly switch to the "normal range or slightly wide angle", as for example with 12-24er lenses is possible. But most of you will already use it in 11mm and not at 16mm.
I have even tried an old Nikon film body and here it may be used as a super wide angle lens in good focal length range of about 14 to 16mm.
At f / 2.8 the Kontaste are somewhat weaker, but it is still very sharp. The contrasts can be easily subsequently improve and in low light the object contrasts are often already high, so that is no problem.
I do not mind that you have to focus it manually at low Bodies, because from D70 up it works, yes. Who, D3000 or D5000 has a D40, perhaps better buys the Nikkor 10-24, but this is much more expensive and fainter.
A big plus for me is that DxO has announced a correction module for the D80 and the Tokina 11-16 for early 2010. I think that this will correct the distortions and color fringing occurring in some situations (green / magenta with extreme differences in brightness and edge). The latter is indeed up automatically corrected when D90 and the distortions interfere only when straight lines do not go through the center of the image (eg the horizon at sea). Exposure compensation described in other reviews, necessary I can not confirm.
