Without compete with an SLR, the photos are excellent even at low light: 1600 ISO widely exploitable printing, progressive loss from ISO 3200 to ISO 12800 only for troubleshooting. Canon always excels in this area and improves system almost every new model.
The pictures are saved in JPEG, RAW and RAW + JPEG. Canon also book on CD for the excellent DPP dérawtiser his shots.
ERGONOMICS: 5/5
The grip is good, you just get used to hold without causing the index on the pop-up flash, which is the case with many compact.
The S110 includes all the settings of a camera expert, easily accessible from the ring at the front, the rear wheel and the touch screen.
I find the lens ring inefficient for large amplitude settings (eg ISO) however it is daunting for small values where every step marks a progression. As it is fully customizable, everyone will adapt to its needs, in addition to the multi-rear wheel. At this duo controls, adds the touch screen. He could think of a gadget, it appears natural to select a development focus, validate options, sort photos by scrolling like on a smartphone, or enter data from the touch keypad, such as login information to transfer data over Wi-Fi (you directly type the network key instead of juggling buttons).
Semi-self as fully manual settings then become a breeze. Compared to many compact where you lose time to juggle menus or buttons on that one the desired combination is achieved in a flash and longer feels limited only by the time of autofocus.
In this regard, the startup time and the shots (no flash) are linked within 2-3 seconds, and there is a burst mode shooting.
OBJECTIVE: 4/5
The wide angle equivalent of 24mm, is convenient if you lack perspective or view, more so with the optional panoramic (software-only). It is bright f / 2, unfortunately the optical zoom stops at 120 mm with a mediocre 5.9 aperture to suit the landscape during the day but will prove crippling indoors (the rise ISO good quality offset somewhat the gap ) or to blur the background of a portrait.
Digital zoom has no interest in my opinion if we retouching his pictures in software. Indeed, enlarge a photograph taken at the maximum optical zoom gives the same result as a photo taken at maximum digital zoom. However, if one uses only the device, this will get immediate expansion. Given that the ratio is about 380%, the final image is exploitable on the Internet once reduced, but do not consider quality printing ... Personally, I do not use the digital zoom, I prefer to keep image "optical" cleaner, and if necessary perform cropping with software.
Although adequate for a compact if lightweight, the S110 is not champion zoom. If instead we look for a compact equipped with a long lens we will move towards the Canon SX280 (or 260 a bit cheaper), less versatile but more suited to close-ups of landscapes, but with a less bright lens. .. the choice of a compact is always compromise.
Although the macro is limited to 3 cm, gives good results. It wishes of luck for moving subjects, such as insects, where to strafe then sort some good shots. For a fixed connection, the result is very good, especially since the opening from f / 2 to better control the depth of field. In video, the macro works very well, regardless of the scene.
The manual focus system with zoom in the part of a small square overlay is very average. It is not always easy to get an idea of the accuracy of the adjustment. Canon is content with this system for years, a zoom option in full high-resolution screen would be welcome.
VIDEO: 4/5
The video is efficient, with controlled color and fast focus, full HD, but it remains at 24 i / s (rather fluid in practice). Replays lose enormously resolution: 640x480 at 120 i / s and 320x240 to 240 inoperative i / s. The sound is ok but the microphone sometimes picks up noise, including the mechanics of the device. The compressed in H.264 MOV remains quality, low fuel consumption and it is no problem to perform editing on computer. This provides a mini-camcorder, but for a priority use video we certainly find better elsewhere.
OTHERS ...
I pass quickly on the automatic modes (common situation in very good to go fast) on the face detection (works well) and the multitude of built-in effects (thumbnail mode is nice, especially for the rest use a software if accuracy is desired, but again to fast it runs well, especially in the logic Wi-Fi for immediate dispatch on the net).
With a weight of 200 grams ideal for carrying, the device is mostly plastic, but the workmanship is of quality (and made in Japan).
The battery recharges quickly and the unit comes with a charger that will avoid to immobilize the device during this time. The option of a USB charging could have been interesting. In all cases, provide for a second battery to take a whole day.
Do not forget to add a screen protector, needed to clean fingerprints and prevent scratching.
Finally, the use of a fast SDHC card will smooth navigation between images (with Sandisk to 95 MB / s access is really fast).
CONCLUSION: 5/5
The Canon S110 is thus a miniature compact but very good quality, which enjoys exemplary ergonomics at the service of satisfactory pictures in the overwhelming majority of situations.
