I have two of these housing.
One is used for Win8 PC backup / One was intended for NAS backups via USB 3.0 connection.
Now unfortunately I had to realize that the compatibility is limited. Would be better to read the product description more closely!
To set the record straight, what I've read in a review:
A 3TB hard disk is recognized in the IcyBox. The hard disk size seems to be no problem. Have yourself a 3TB WD RED incorporated into the IcyBox housing, then initializes the HDD under Win8 and converted from MBR to GPT, so the full capacity is available in a partition. Drive letter + volume name assigned - Windows 8 makes no problems. The plate is used as normal.

The problem is more likely the lack of Linux / USB3.0 compatibility of Raidsonic IB-IcyBox 372STU3-B hard drive enclosure (8.9 cm (3.5 inches), SATA, USB 3.0.
Writing in the product description (under Details) is (quote with Copy & Paste)
"Supports:
USB 2.0: Windows 98 / ME / 2000 / XP / Vista / 7, MAC OS> 9.1
USB 3.0: Windows XP / Vista / 7 "
Apparently this is to take almost verbatim.

Windows 8 comes to happiness according to my positive test added yet to the above compatibility list.
At least one tested Linux exception I found (probably) also. My Acronis bootable CD (based on Linux, if I am not mistaken) worked at least read, could therefore recognize the built-in drive.
(Thus would IcyBox housing + HDD suitable to restore Windows from a saved Acronis disk image. I tested the hard disk access but only with my 1TB IcyBox PC hard drive, since my new WD 3TB hard drive still contained no data.)
If this access would not work with my CD Acronis, now I possessed two unsuitable for their intended use IcyBox HDD enclosure. But fortunately I can use IcyBox1 under Windows.
What did not work with my IcyBox2 in the test:
STOPPERS you the IcyBox with a 3TB HDD to a Synology NAS (based on Linux), the AS2105 controller of IcyBox is recognized (displayed in the system information of the NAS), but the hard drive contained does not appear under "Other devices", is therefore not usable.
The test I have not repeated with a smaller hard drive - maybe it would have gone with a 2TB HDD? At least it did not go with 3TB HDD, neither with MBR, GPT partition with yet.
It was not the hard disk fault, as I now know.
The same hard drive is in a half as expensive, fanless (3.5 "USB 3.0 (SuperSpeed) aluminum HDD HDD enclosure for SATA I / II / III | optics aluminum gebürtstet | compatible with USB 2.0 | External | black), but MIT official Linux compatibility problems detected on NAS. undertaken Yesterday the housing exchange successfully and will now once useless for me IcyBox probably stored only as a spare box for indefinite purposes (with Windows PC or maybe it is good indeed for Smart TV recordings, what Do I need to test).
That really Linux is the crux, can also use a Knoppix CD (Linux) test.
Knoppix boot without manual intervention not only at the end, if at the start the IcyBox housing is plugged in and turned on the PC. Runs Knoppix then, GParted can not display drives and also in the file manager you can not work of course.
Overall, a disappointing device that I would not buy it again.
Only recommended if you urgently need a Windows hard drive enclosure with fan or reasons of taste want a device with blue light effects for the eye.
The fan is the way annoyingly loud, no matter where you him hinstellt (desk, floor, etc.). Drowned easily my PC and can volume terms probably compete with so many overheated graphics card.
