The Absence (CD)

Customer Review

Here is the third album of the young singer, author, composer, American - who enjoyed success since the years 2005-2006 - Melody Gardot, considered originally as a competitor of Diana Krall and Norah Jones, in styles quite neighbors. His voice is languid, haunting, sometimes dragging, even a little hoarse (track 8, for example). Like the previous two albums, its effects remain very sensual. But different rates assert here: one for the beach, and for 5, or 9 (duo) or the 11. Melody is indeed a tribute to bossa nova, with sometimes scat (track 1). Songs are sung in English and other in Portuguese (for the beach and 9). Accompaniments and choirs out of the ordinary, with a view like "world music", and - sometimes - very "exotic" (track 11). Other titles have accompaniments and a little more classical arrangements. The beaches are the most successful, in my opinion: the 1 ("Mira"), 4 ("So We Meet Again My Hearthache"), 5 ("Lisboa"), 6 ("Impossible Love"), the 7 ("If I Tell You I Love You"), 9 ("Se Voce Me Ama") and 10 ("My Heart Will not Have It Any Other Way"). Either in total a very different record of the first two, actually much bossa nova and world music as vocal jazz. Melody she wanted and stand out from its two competitors (Diana and Norah), changing niche? In reality, it seems that she simply wanted to expand its field of vocal expression ...
