Most Mac mini (Late 2012)

Dell U2713HM 68.6 cm (27 inch) LED monitor (DVI, HDMI, VGA, DisplayPort, 8ms response time, height adjustable) black (accessories)

Customer Review

Much really new, I have not actually add the previous reviews, which the mine is more of a confirmation of what has been said. I would therefore like to take this opportunity also sprinkle a little my experience on Mac mini, I had even mused about eg the need for expensive Apple DL-DVI adapter in this constellation.

*** *** Competitors

I had drawn in my search still the Samsung SyncMaster S27A850D, or the HP ZR2740w into consideration. But I can not make the decisive advantage, which is why I prefer the Dell should have another monitor, which also usually compared well over 100 was then cheaper.

Already gets oneself a Mac, then perhaps pushing for an Apple monitor. But the current Thunderbold display offers only USB 2.0, mirrors and costs far more. With the built-in the new iMacs displays could diesbzgl. perhaps on an update hope (USB 3.0, reportedly fell by 75% mirroring and flat), but when that is written in the stars and only one thing is for Apple fixed: the price will not be lower than the current, and thus even ists not an option for me.

The speakers are missing does not bother me personally. Some 2.1 boxes for under 50 are determined always offer more oomph than anything you could accommodate in a monitor housing. Of course opposite the Thunderbold display also lacks a microphone and in particular the iSight camera - because you have to decide how important a FaceTime, Skype and Co are and whether it is necessary to an external solution. Otherwise, the Apple solution has determined benefits for MacBook owners as dock replacement, although not come to me with my Mini into play.

*** Resolution ***

I use professionally for a while a 17-inch MacBook Pro and am used to the resolution of 1920x1200 pixels. Since I did not want to have less work surface rather longer and determines the standard FullHD display came with it with their resolution of 1920x1080 pixels out of the question.

In another review, the excessive resolution was complained in relation to the scene. Spread / accustomed likely a pixel density of 96 PPI be (eg. SXGA / 1280x1024 at 17, or FullHD / 1920x1080 at 23). The Dell is with WQHD / 2560x1440 and 27 then perhaps more at 108 PPI. I think this resolution is absolutely unproblematic and must also set here nowhere just any font larger. But maybe I'm due to the approximately 133 PPI on my laptop pretty painless in this matter.

*** Following the Mac mini ***

At this point one has to know that via HDMI the full resolution of your monitor can not be activated. To use a here also the monitor attached Dual-Link DVI cable anything because the DVI adapter of the Minis is the HDMI port. But there is the Thunderbold port of Mac's physically compatible with the display port, a mini-DP to DP cable is ideal in this combination. As such the 10 Euro consistently bad reviews have, but you also like to can spend 30 euros for it, I here had me a "Lindy CROMO" ordered for about 17 to the well does its job: is just a cable.

On the edge: why today offers VGA connections and even attributes to a VGA cable, I do not understand; the expected but at 99% of the people who pick up a monitor with this resolution, end up in the garbage!?!

*** Criticisms ***

I had quarreled because of very streaky reviews long if I should order the Dell and now regret to say: almost all identified deficiencies, I can confirm. The gap between the plastic and panel at the bottom is quite large (probably a dust collector), the IPS-glow effect is very pronounced (in all corners of the same - it is only so that it is at the bottom left and right more, if you how peeps also ergonomically, a little from the top of the monitor) and also the whistle has my device (Rev. A00, Sept. 2012) on. Alone the halos, or the backlight bleeding I can not make and pixel error (neither dead nor bright) are me so far also not noticed.

The IPS-Glow likely disqualify the screen for movie enjoyment, but as a workstation monitor, I have not had a situation in which he would have noticed me, let alone that he would have me really disturbed. Only if you work a lot in full-screen terminals with a black background, it would probably annoy.

Alone the whistle is a point which make me wonder now and then. Although it is barely audible, but still: My monitor is now louder than my computer, because the Mini I hear nothing, if it is not exactly hard busy. The environment has to be very quiet; behind the monitor, or if you keep your eyes closed with his head a few centimeters in front of the panel, it is quite clear (well, okay, who has been sitting so).

The PDF that here was kindly provided in another review, I can reproduce the problem, and then also very obvious. Properly crass tone was, for example, when I (time to spend just a long log) in a terminal window (black text on a white background) in a full-screen console output have run.

*** *** Problems

I separate from my equipment and my switch completely from the mains. Here then comes afterwards partly no connection is made: I have the DP connector and plug it again, so that the monitor displays the image of the computer. The selected setting on Dell seems to sometimes get lost.

In addition, I have a very strong spirits font effect when scrolling. Especially this falls in black letters on a dark background on: you scroll, for example on a web page with such a color scheme, then the letters on a gray background are traced in white.

Both points appear to have been previously addressed in the reviews and therefore I do not know if it perhaps rather on Mac, or maybe just now lies on the monitor, or just on the cable. About appropriate instructions and advice in the comments I would be glad, therefore. In particular, the tightening of the font is really annoying when you have once injected it.

*** Other *** & Conclusion

The Dell provides a resolution in, colors and illumination for my needs (mail, web browsing, Office, IDE and from time to time shots of the Cam-Corder, or beginner DSLR edit) good picture in a simple but this also unobtrusive housing. The OSD is simple and functional. The pivot function is impressive in this size, but only to use for such special applications so. The monitor needs in depth a lot of space, which is just necessary for the pedestal 27 can provide the corresponding stability: here I will possibly change to a VESA mount, because my desk is against a wall. As from-and-to-TV replacement and multimedia screen, the angle independence an IPS panel offers perhaps the quite pronounced glow effect is likely to disqualify Dell in this discipline but.

The whistling is probably highly dependent on the sense of hearing and the ambient conditions, but may not actually be and the shadows that occur when you move me I find very disturbing. Such criticisms coupled with the plastic housing let me deduct two points in total.

Certainly the Dell is also happy to spend a perfect monitor, but for such a can with the resolution and a 27-diagonal a few thousand euros. I bought it from Amazon for under 500 with a willingness for that price certainly having to take compromises. I can advise of the appliance, just like me, unfortunately, may also make a recommendation: just in this article and its controversial reviews, I can only advise you to get a personal and entirely subjective picture, because on this it seems to arrive here ,

I myself am certainly not totally satisfied with this screen; for the price, the absence of alternatives and for my purposes but then enough, but I have to keep him still. The size and resolution is a dream: already alone at around juggling with a few Finder windows, I wonder how I ever got by with less. But precisely this everybody has to decide for yourself personally quite - and maybe you get after all of the other reviews said to loud existing models without Glow, buzzing, etc.

=== UPDATE FROM June 2013 ===

The shadow of the font you move I felt but as permanently very disturbing. In the comments, someone had the problem that the USB ports were recognized only as 2.0er with him. Had the Hub until then not used, when trying this at my place I was able to recreate find that absolutely nothing was doing to my USB ports. Fibrillation I find fatal for screen workers - this is impossible. In tests this particular Dell had diesbzgl. extremely well cut. And then my copy turned out as such, that in certain patterns (see comments) produced extreme flickering across the screen. Perhaps a problem on Mac and not on the monitor? I do not know: in sum's has given me enough easy. . On the Dell side then zero support and respect not guarantee Found: not the fine art.

So much trouble and trying out variations, perhaps the problems but to exclude somehow - I was just annoyed. And the look for alternatives then I see the Dell 2711 Comments on pink color gradients and the like, which are then not accepted by Dell as a defect. That may indeed be great monitors ... if you're lucky. Obviously it is because zero to QA and myself seem to take a Dell monitor more like Russian roulette.

Currently have no alternative for me found ('m happy to have for suggestions in the comments), but the thing comes off (Amazon has since compared to Dell a real top-line service!) And Dell me after the number is no longer in the house * grummelgrummelgrummel *
