Positives:
- Here apps are available for free and the navigation is also available for Germany to unlock this world it costs 15 euros and a few cents.
- OneNote is good for advanced Notes, in connection with Skydrive also a good thing, especially if you also use OneNote on PC
- Windows Phone 8 is very clear and generally fast and flowing
- Good email client
- Very good text prediction in the keyboard (weighs a little the absence of Swype on)
- Beautiful limited multitasking (thus no jerking as on Android)
- Samsung Mini Diary was developed further and was liberated by the colorful frame
- Uploading to various services is now such as the image without decreasing frame
- Despite the size Ativ S is very light
- Interestingly mechanism for fixing the battery cover (robust than one first believes)
- Removable large capacity battery
- MicroSD and MicroSIM can be taken without the battery remove
- MicroSD and MicroSIM can be easily removed by a spring mechanism (once opposed withdrawing direction so that the press card from the spring is pushed out)
Negatives:
However, there are some negative points that bother me and very rich to only 3 stars.
On the one hand there is now and then inexplicably hanger, then the Ativ S even first stop responding and then it runs again as if nothing had happened, whether it is up to 3rd party software or Windows Phone 8 here I do not care, something like this can not simply happen.
Then there was an error with IE which saw to it that this was not operable until a reboot of the Ativ S. It was incomprehensible how this error came into existence and was by me so far not be reproduced. Even such a thing should not happen.
Another problem is that the Ativ S relatively naked comes along, that little useful apps that are in other systems such as Bada Standard are not present or there is blatant losses in the function:
- Calendar does exist, but there is no weekly overview, only day or month
- Task Scheduler in the calendar is amateurish, reps can ONLY daily, every Monday to Friday, every Saturday, every x. Day of the month or every x. Day of y. Month happen, other intervals are not possible
- Clock, has a special function only an alarm clock, there is no stopwatch still Timer
- Notes that there is no simple memo, OneNote or Office are inflated for something
- SMS can not be planned and then sent automatically
- Music player controls no 5.1, eg BT headphones
- No voice
- No File Explorer
- No Swype
- Not install apps on memory cards
- No lock the screen orientation
- Unlock the screen only with a mop possible upwards
- No quick sets
Part of the lack of functionality can then of course by apps from the Store-install, but then either advertising or corresponding costs.
What is still very negative noticed was the import of contacts.
On the Ativ S there is an app from the Samsung importing contacts via BT allowed.
When Wave it costs 3 clicks to select all contacts and then send it to the Ativ S, the Ativ S will have to confirm you every single contact, which is not indicated time. At about 100 contacts is the fast annoying. But the result is even worse, it has been transmitted only 1 contact in this way.
A transmission via email worked then, but was also a clicking orgy.
Microsoft emphasizes, however, that it would be best to synchronize the contacts with a Microsoft account, Facebook or Google account.
Birthdays are unfortunately not automatically added to your calendar, this happens only if the contacts have been invited to the Microsoft account and you log on to that account on your PC, the Windows Phone alone this creates not.
The KindleApp is unfortunately represent only books, stored in the cloud PDF are unfortunately ignored here. Here Amazon needs to do something. Also missing the Amazon MP3 / Cloud Player, Amazon also here has something to do.
Negative for me is still the size of the device, it is about 7cm extremely broad, making it suitable to be operated with one hand only for very large hands.
A narrower and correspondingly shorter instrument would be certainly more appealing to many people.
Update:
Meanwhile, Windows Phone 8.1 is released for the Samsung Ativ S.
This some significant improvements arise:
+ Notification Center with adjustable speed settings
+ Rotation lock is functioning properly: In portrait mode, the unit then remains in the portrait mode and in landscape mode it is in landscape mode.
+ Swypetastatur
+ Apps can be moved to the memory card and also installed directly
+ Calendar now has a weekly overview
+ Folder for tiles
+ Data usage counter
What's missing:
- Rotation of all system screens
