So that bell comes with a button (the bell in short) that can stick close to her door easily with 3M adhesive, it runs on battery (which is provided). In the box you will find a chime that connects the current and another, smaller, portable (and which works with 3 batteries not included).
Living in an apartment, I decided to use only the little chime battery because I did not know where to plug the biggest. I put it on a table against the wall. At bottom, the volume is loud enough for me to hear from the other end of the apartment. And big plus, if I really expect someone (or package), I can take with me this little bell by lowering the volume.
I tested the biggest, it connects easily but it must connect to an extension cord or put it into a wall outlet and leave it there. This is ideal in a home.
Finally, the bell has an incredible number of melodies. I have lost count. A bit complicated to go all the melodies but once it's done.
Quite honestly, for the price, barely 30, you have not one but two carillons. It is unbeatable. A sedentary and portable. I love it.
