Sony SmartWatch 2 Handy Clock (4.1 cm (1.6 inch) display, NFC, Bluetooth, Android 4.0) with silicone bracelet (Electronics)

Customer Review

Smart watches are all the rage and promise some miracles and life to change completely. What can the little Sony and is the clock really smart?

Latest updates at the end of the review.

Initial start-up
==============
Delivered the clock is in a small chic packaging and is unpacked quickly. According to the manual should be the clock first 30 hours (!!!) charge. That was me then but too much and the clock itself has also been reported to charge slightly more than 2 hours and 100% displayed. In English and French manual is only 30 minutes by the way the speech, should therefore be a translation error. (Thanks for the tip by a comment here)
First surprise: the clock directly can not operate the SmartWatch. First action is necessarily the coupling with an Android phone. This coupling is done most conveniently via NFC connection and since my Samsung Galaxy S3 offers NFC I have also chosen this path. It keeps the clock on the phone and starts already on the phone, a link to a Sony app in Google Play Store. This app is the control center for the clock. About this app the clock refers all information from your phone and you can make adjustments. The installation of other apps is done by this app. Just off the clock you can install or uninstall any apps.

Once you have installed this app, also shows the clock finally at the time.
If you press the side button, the display illuminates and is illuminated and now you can click the bottom of the house icon to access the clock menu. The operation is very similar to the smartphone, the Android operating concept immediately apparent. Without the pressure on the side button, the keys are ineffective, however.

In the clock itself can now eg Blutooth on or off, as well as the appearance of the clock select. A total of 5 such watch faces are available: 1 digital and 4 analog clocks, each with 2 black and 2 white, with or without day-date. I myself like the black watch face with date indicator at best, but a little, I am disappointed that you can choose only among these 5 variants. I had actually expected more here, because that could be a first advantage of the clock so that looks to change individually. Perhaps Sony puts in but after an update?

Comfort
==========
The clock wears very comfortable, the plastic (silicone) bracelet is very light and soft, here one could criticize that the material attracts lint magical. So far I have remained without scratches. However, since the display goes to the edge I'm afraid that the clock is not hedged against extreme shocks. I am skeptical, but this is the test of time so far to assess really too short to that.

The clock can be read very well in both the (not quite) the dark and in bright persons bill. By pressing the side button, the display is illuminated and you can easily read, even in pitch-dark the clock. A built-in light sensor automatically adjusts the display brightness, and it works really well.

The smart apps
==================
About the central smartphone app can be little additional programs to install on the clock and also uninstall. These programs are then logically not displayed on the smartphone but only in this nerve center. We recommend eg apps for Gmail, Calendar, Facebook or even apps for the great sports program Runtastic. Since I am an avid runner, I am particularly looking forward to this app. For Whatsapp no immediate app from Sony is offered in the market but you can find paid apps, in front of which I hereby ever wants urgently warn. More on that later, but more.
I had initially installed me the above Apps and these are then displayed to me on the clock. To start such an app on the clock I have to press the side button, press the cottage and then on the logo of the App. Now starts the app. When calendar eg my next appointments are displayed in tabular form me, my finger clicking on a date I can still see a little more details on dates. However, much more I can do now and the date content is displayed shortened.
For appointment reminders vibrate the phone and the Kalenderapp reminds me of the appointment.
When a new mail in particular on the clock GMAIL me also signaled by vibrating your messages and the mail will be displayed briefly on the screen so that I can decide quickly whether I want to know more. If I am curious about the mail I can again press the side button, cottage, GMAIL start and then choose the mails. Unfortunately here also my next disillusionment, both mail subject and content are displayed clipped the mail subject eg appears shortened to 26 letters. In consequence is often not clearly attributable to the subject and I have to look on the phone what is at stake. Just this condensed version of the subject line for me is anything but smart. At least if we're talking about only 26 characters.
Set or parameterize Somehow I can the mail app on.

Facebook:
the Facebook app was the first I've uninstalled because blatant software error. After a few minutes the app forgets namely my login name and requested re-register on myself. And every few minutes. That's a No!

Whatsapp:
At first I did not receive any information about incoming Whatsapp messages. That made me deeply angry because just WhatsApp belongs necessarily so. In desperation, I then made me a paid app (1 euro), this was but crap in and has also displayed nothing.

WatchIt !:
However, in a row I have WatchIt! and found this app is an absolute must-have app. This application has namely all (!!!) See Notifications of mobile phones on the clock. This gives you not only WhatsApp, but also all other notifications such as Facebook, but also of course all mails etc. Actually, you can then remove it in a row again explicit Apps for mail etc. because WatchIt bring everything you need. This app can even be parameterized so that you can suppress certain types of messages. Actually shameful for Sony that this great app from Sony is. Only with this app but the clock is only to, at least a little, smart clock.

Runtastic
As already mentioned, I especially looked forward to the runtastic app. As a runner, I have my smartphone in a pocket on the body and would therefore delighted to be able to read the current run data at a clock. Unfortunately, this does not really make sense, because you always have to first press the side button, home button, then start the app, wait and then Runtastic appears. After about 10-15 seconds, the clock is displayed, regardless of whether the runtastic app is launched so far and has shown me something and then I'd have to back the side button, home button ... We can already see that is totally impractical during a run or cycling.
On a request from Sony, unfortunately, no one has yet responded, the provider Runtastic has reported quickly and informed me that unfortunately this change comes at the clock from Sony and unfortunately by Runtastic can not be influenced. Really great it would be if the clock is running during Runtastic not appear but the Runtastic display would permanently displayed. And often in a darkening in order to save battery, press the constant "Button house apps startup" but not the point.
Supplement 28.10: by a comment I've learned that by pressing twice the side button to jump to the last active application. Runtastic is displayed directly with current data. That is much more pleasant to use than my characteristics described above. Thus, the app is now in a halfway usable even if the display naturally springs back to the clock display after a few seconds. Thanks for the tip, I have unfortunately nowhere as read and Sony makes no favors that such an important information on the operation is not made strikingly clear.

More Apps
there are many many other Apps. Here you can play around just once. Some, such as the weather display are indeed supposedly nice since you as well as only the (side, homes and app) to press 3 buttons, the question arises whether we really tried the clock for a local weather information or does not look right on the smartphone? I've uninstalled eg after a brief test again the weather app. A nice game Show is the remote control of the camera, so you can shoot from the clock, a picture on the smartphone. A small preview of the image is displayed on the clock, just in the main camera but you can see nicely that the clock with the display of photos to make sure your computer boundaries, the CPU can be felt employs the image on the small clock display down attributed. In Market beyond many other apps available, I have not been tested.

Battery drain
==============
My clock keeps 2-3 days with me normally. I admit, I get lots of messages and use the clock so intense. What particularly disturbs me in connection with the battery consumption, the clock unfortunately insufficiently informs the current battery level. I have in the header while a battery icon, but no indication%. Unfortunately, it happened to me also 2 times that the clock has simply shut down due to power outage without previously a warning to tell me. And it did not work in my eyes. Here is one establishes a% indication and the clock must be sufficiently forward to tell me that it is critical. Unfortunately, Sony has indeed delivered during the trial period an update to the battery indicator, however, not optimized.

The consumption at mobile rise naturally because a permanent BT connection is established. 1-2 hours less daily capacity I can definitely feel here and enough for me it is no longer convenient for a complete day. A charge in between is essential if I want to use the clock.

Conclusion
====
Cute toy in a nice clock to be regarded, unfortunately in many places no sophisticated software and thus lost a lot of potential uses. Without the native non-Sony app WatchIt! I would even be inclined to give an almost unusable. Thanks to this ingenious app, however, you get at least all important notifications to the clock. But Sony has just urgently optimize battery display and behavior with apps like Runtastic, so the clock is really fun.

Update 12/05/2013
=================
Sony is working on the software. To 3:12. there was an update that clearly goes in the right direction. There are now additional watch faces (so called Sony so the clock designs) and a stopwatch is now an integral part. Writings are partly larger and more readable and minor bug fixes have been made. Nothing has changed on the concept that the clock after 30 seconds always like a screensaver puts on a running application. That continues to be the largest "Scandals" for me especially with apps like Runtastic. Nevertheless, a positive development can be felt, the clock is now just before the 4th star.

Update 27/05/2014
=================
Now in May 2014. was a "larger" update. Including the ability to make you now own the clock. With a small application on your smartphone, you can choose to look like the clock and what to see. One can eg move the date to the desired location individual elements. There is finally the possibility the battery level in% to be displayed. Furthermore, you can display the next appointment on the clock or as temperature and weather allow (current weather, not a prediction). The appointment display I have however removed again, the display shows the date always cut and even with all day events is not so helpful. I fear the display is too small because, as makes sense rather an app that displays the calendar, such app there are for the clock.
Also significantly more applications for the clock Market are now available, as an example is a small map application that displays the current location can be called. So you can be guided by looking at the clock roughly in a city that can be quite useful / practical considered to be the smartphone to pull out of his pocket.
All in all, a noticeable positive development. Given the current range of functions I increase the rating to 4 stars.

Update / Outlook 09.10.2014
==========================
Unfortunately, no further update to date. Sony has now introduced the SmwartWatch3 based on Android Wear. I dare to predict that the 2er is thus not evolved and remains on the current status. I can not imagine that Sony developed both worlds parallel to me. Presumably the whole development is plugged into the Wear-world. Too bad everyone who wants to re-buy the clock still should bear in mind that he acquires a presumed "dead horse", in which one can hardly hope for advancement.

Update 02/01/2015
=================
Oh, what a surprise! Sony developed still further. Although not a stunning development but more than I expected. There are now even more Watch Faces and also the order of the apps on the clock, you can decide for yourself. Perhaps Sony will turn yet and gives us from and to small advancements? Would be nice.

Small personal request at the end: those who rated this review as "unhelpful" let me please give the reasons by the comment, maybe I can understand and still REPLACE this so? I learn like this. Thank you!
