Haptics
The lens feels like the "big" brother 40mm very valuable, even though it consists of a plastic housing. The connector is made of metal, as well as lenses from the high-priced segment of Canon. The focus ring is rotated 360 degrees and it's really easy to focus continuously so. Very nice is that you can focus manually at any time, without having to set the autofocus advance via switch. Since the focus mechanism is electronic, the lens must be connected to the camera, and this may be switched on to operate it. All around a quality product.
Focus
The new STM-engine is very accurate for my taste, it was in my test photos hardly outliers here. The new EF-S 24mm lens divides not only the external appearance with the 40mm pancake lens, but also its "sound" in focus. Unfortunately it is not as quiet as the 18-55 STM kit lens. For video recordings with the internal Micro, he is clearly audible. Nevertheless, the engine pulls wonderful and is very accurate here.
Image Quality
At maximum aperture (f2.8), the images in the middle look quite sharp, faded to a stage from at f4, the sharpness pulls up to the edges. At f5.6 everything is really wonderful sharp. Serious distortions are me not noticed until now, but there are slight chromatic aberrations show in the corners. Please note that Canon currently no support for automatic corrections for chromatic aberration and correction profiles provides. Hopefully these will be supplied via an update. As I said everything quite easily, whatever else quickly in retrospect can be solved by software. Compared to the '40s, it seems to be somewhat weaker in the performance. Yet one gets dimmed wonderful pictures.
Bokeh
Well talk about a wide-angle and bokeh is pretty pointless. You can hammer out a beautiful bokeh at maximum aperture, but this one has to be very close to the object. Many things probably too close :)
Speaking of proximity. The minimum focusing distance is 16cm.
Why only 4 stars?
Unfortunately disturbs me the buzzing sound from the focus, because I'm filming now and then. A stabilizer would have been very fine, also an EF port instead of the EF-S terminal would have found many fans. Can you do anything.
Conclusion
A relatively inexpensive prime lens for APS-C line of Canon, which is well built and very handy. There is not much to complain about. P / L is wrong here. Clear recommendation for people with small purse and backpack. The 24mm maybe are not ideal for portraits but for Street (persons + environment) and they are wonderful landscape.
