Note:
Again, I thank you again to get Syron for kindly supporting the game to run.
At the end of the review you will find a little of me and Syron compiled guide on how to get Revenant under modern operating systems like Windows XP and Vista to run, have fun!

Introduction:
========

'' Hey, all I watch her, another Diablo clone '', so the - exaggerated expressed by me - Review gist of many other introductions, which I have read to the Revenant published in 1999.
It's just this is a criticism of just does not apply to this item!
Although the focus is also on Revenant action-packed battles with numerous bad guys, monsters and demons, but apart from that has the title enough autonomy to the certificate - clone - to bypass clear.
Especially the combat system offers here namely much more dynamic and more demanding battles as the oh-so-great Diablo with which the game is compared repeatedly.
No, the real problems of Cinematix 'action RPG lie elsewhere, namely mainly the Publisher Eidos Interactive.
This looked at the time namely forced to make savings at every turn, as another marketed by Eidos Interactive game Daikatana, mercilessly bombed and thus left a hole in their financial planning.
Revenant was Consequently published entirely in haste, so that the Cinematix Studios was denied the opportunity to provide the title with all the planned features and make the necessary fine-tuning.
Ungüstige prerequisites for this action RPG.
Whether still a useful piece of software has become of it?

Story:
=====

The action takes place in the fantasy world '' Ur '.
This was once before countless millennia dominated by selfish deities that went to each other under the guise of good and evil for the jugular.
The consequence of this was a war gods (almost) destroyed populated by monsters and wild beasts, world, with which the gods knew what to do more and therefore its creation Ur just left and moved on behind him.
The people who survived this cataclysm, formed over time new kingdoms, empires and dynasties.

One of the smaller and less significant dynasties, Averam, located on the island Akhuilon, which is these days' ruled by the popular Princes' Tendrick Averam '.
Unfortunately Tendricks reign of peace and prosperity is lately by a mysterious cult that 'called' The Children of change '', disturbed.
This abducted residents of Mist Haven to just integrating them by means of brainwashing in their own ranks.
And as if that is not bad enough, they have also abducted Tendricks daughter Andria.
Since his knights and soldiers are powerless against the magical abilities of the sect priest to Tendrick a so-called '' Revenant '' from hell Anserak is forced using the seedy magician Sardok conjure.

Revenants were during their lifetimes really capable people in their field, and so are also retrieved from those same skills from the dead in order henceforth to serve their masters as a perfect slave to the re-learning their skills.
Unfortunately, those who are summoned in this way lose their memories, and are also still with a sort of magical curse is that it forces you to unconditionally carry out the orders of their masters, whether they like it or not.
Since they do not have their own personality more, male Revenants usually receive the name '' Locke '' which translates as '' the nameless '' means.
Your last name consist of the royal houses, which they have to serve now.

So after being braised in hell for countless years is Locke D'Averam, which already haunted only shreds of his memories in your mind, free from Anserak to herzuhalten henceforth for Tendrick as a warrior slave.
But this is different Revenant.
He manages to convince the princes of it to be released into the wild, if he manages to save Andria and the '' Children of change '' wipe out.
So there is still hope for a better life for our miesepetrigen undead Locke.
But first he must first destroy the suicidal priest who is illegally invaded Sardoks summoning chamber ...

The bottom line is we are dealing here with a typical '' About Mighty Hero flatten monsters, demons, etc., to save a kingdom and a princess '' - to do the story.
What makes Revenant interesting is the complex background story of the game world, which is in the manual and the library, which you can find in the game, in much greater detail and shown in greater detail, as I have done here.
Even the dubious protagonist who contrary to expectations has an independent and quite likeable personality, the quality of actually ausgelutschten action raises again to a little bit.
The same applies to some of the NPCs encountered in the game and their role is not entirely in the game due to Eidos savings to fruition.
It namely seems that Locke originally a few teammates should be made available.
They meet in the game namely three NPC's that you can ask to join Locke, then you will be put off by this but in principle.
Even the artwork of the installation you can see how Locke fought along with aforementioned Chars a stone golem.
Here we have already the first negative aspect of the cuts.
What would you be able to remove everything from the story, characters, and even the gameplay itself, if you had given Cinematix enough time?

The couple Story Twists the very rectilinear action are in any case relatively predictable and not really motivating to continue playing.
And the ending falls of course rather tragic and openly in order to justify a possible successor (who has however not seen the light of the world to this day).

All in all, the plot only average stuff, garnished with a few bright spots like the cool Mainchar. It would certainly have been possible here if Eidos ...

Gameplay control and combat system:
=================================

Revenant is played with the mouse, and the keyboard.
With the left mouse button actions are performed, such as Making calls, open doors or naturally attacking opponents.
The character (Locke) is conducted with the right mouse button by the environment (you have to keep this down the right mouse button, which is a bit unusual at first).
Locke can also run to escape z. B. before overpowering opponents (the keyboard R button).
The interface at the bottom of the screen or the menu on the right, can be either fully activated with the spacebar or disabled, or separately with the buttons B and V.
The keypad F1-F4 is the hot key for four fixed spells, while the keys F5-F9 serve as hotkeys for items such as food or health potions.
With the C key Locke pulls out his gun, or put it aside (the latter happens automatically when a call is initiated, or Locke performs a specific action such as opening a door).
The X and Y buttons are required for use of the bow (with X pull the bow and with the arrows Y use up).
However, the arc is only one place in the game really used (especially since I have found even 50-arrow ammunition in my play-through, which I took half of said body!), So this is another immature Feature acts of Revenant, the originally much more content was probably meant for.

But we are now one of the combat system.
In addition to Locke's likeness left above you see three bars:
Red for life points (the complete loss precisely this course it means Game Over), blue for mana (the magic), and the yellow bar condition.
A physical attack will cost here namely a certain amount of stamina points, although they regenerate themselves very quickly, but also consume very quickly in the heat of battle.
If this happens you should block out (F-key), or the enemy circle and sent his attacks deal until the condition has regenerated something.
One sees with gezückter weapon an enemy, Locke turns this fact automatically, which can be referred to above tactics such as blocking and counter or dodge and circling into action easily.
Although this system can sometimes be problematic when you have to fight against two or three enemies at once, but overall this was '' fixing an enemy '' a clever step in the battle system (you can this system disable but also in the Options menu but I have not tried in practice).
For standard attacks we have three different attacks made available either cause much damage, but also affect Locke's condition more, or just cause little damage and consume little condition.
If one uses the left mouse button in combat, these three standard attacks are applied randomly.
By using the keys A, S and D, these blow-variants can specify exactly which gives a greater control of the fight.
Eliminated opponents bring a natural experience points a, with which you level up.
Furthermore, they also drop gold and items which you can pick up with the G button.
If you have brought three Level-ups behind, it is advisable in the city Mist Haven return to learn a new attack technique for Locke at the local martial master named Jong.
In this way, you will unlock new moves that need to be used in part with the keys Q, W and E.
At least here you come with your mouse alone no longer.
Although the fights can also haphazard drauflos Click and skillful Block (Block is here an absolute must) master, but one will have it a little easier when you have mastered all the fighting techniques reasonably.

Who can not be bothered to regular fights, can also rely on magic.
Apart from the obligatory healing or attack spells, there is also magic which enhances your skills temporarily or Status values increased in the short term.
So you have some breathing room if you want to struggle through as a warrior or mage.
The most effective way is of course a mixture of both.

It is worth mentioning that the enemy respawn in Revenant.
This brings on the one hand the advantage that you can do some level and Moneygrinding here and there, but on the other hand brings the disadvantage that the whole pesky opponents back when you have again put into a large dungeon times the wrong turn. So a fairly ambivalent feature.
Quite apart from this you can find in the city, of course, several shops before, where you should stock up on weapons, equipment and potions in order to offer the increasingly fierce opponents Paroli can (assuming enough gold).

Gameplay The menu:
===================

Approximately one-third of the screen is lopped off from the menu, which is located on the right edge.
There you will find six sub-menu covering all relevant areas.
Classify from the top to the lowest menu item:

Spell List: Here you will find a list of all hitherto learned spells that can involve also from the list in one of the hotkey slots of the bottom of the screen interface '.
In order to learn new spells, you need magic talismans which can be mainly found in treasure chests the gaming world.
Now is the talismans menu correctly arrange and confirm this combination to cast the spell and enter it in the list.
For those who do not feel like haphazardly to look for new combinations, there are scrolls with the correct Talisman combinations to find.

Status and skills: Display of all status values.
Besides the general values like LP, MP and accumulated experience points, especially the six areas Status strength, constitution, agility, reflexes, mind and happiness are interesting.
This menu is used namely to check on what is intended to improve these areas at the next level up.
You can have two (or, one after reaching the fifteenth level) of the above areas with a + mark, so that they are then incremented.
In this way one can determine in which direction to develop Locke (fighter, mage, etc.).
You can also call a second menu, indicating what about the skills.
Of the ten skills that are displayed here, but there are really only six made it into the final game (Summon, melee, sword, blunt weapons, axes and lockpicking), the remaining four (attack, defense, knife and bow) can be safely ignored, because they belong to the unfinished or completely coated material that I mentioned in the introduction.
The purpose of this table is to convey as practiced Locke in the corresponding skill is.
To fight so much with the sword, this skill will improve and rise over time to higher levels, so that you do more harm with swords, more hit lands etc.
Especially with 'Summon' 'This is important, because you can only learn new spells, if you have attained a certain level in this area.

Equipment: You can look at Locke's current equipment, and convert him, of course.
There are 11 different areas of the body which can be assigned here with armor, accessories, etc..

Magic Bag: The same as the spell list (as I said, a lack of fine-tuning).

Backpack: Here all captured or purchased items are stored.
However, caution is necessary, because who is going haphazard soon finds himself in a shambles again. There are chucked in a single infinitely large area to cover all objects.
Which one can but countered fortunately, by buying leather pouch or place. With these you can organize namely the hodgepodge of armor, weapons and food itself.
The program is even clever enough to compile a system that is to say when the first object to be stored in a bag, a drink is, all other potions are you from now also found stored in this bag.
Admittedly, a rather confused system, but if you have it only once seen through (which is not hard) prevails created order in the inventory.
Usable Items like potions and food can be incidentally also provide a hotkey.

Map: Explains actually saying a Automap is displayed which facilitates the orientation and warns of enemies that are located nearby.
Locke appears on the map as a green dot, friendly NPC's as blue dots, and enemies as Red.

Gameplay Negative criticism:
======================

Here are a few things in the gameplay that have displeased me:
Despite the successful combat system Revenant is down a bit monotonous for my taste. Man has tried to spice up the dungeons with smaller puzzles and traps, but the bottom line is it's clear here about fighting.
Hostilities are places but also a little half-baked, some spells are in fact quite overpowering failed and there is plenty of Manaheiltränke to buy and to find, so you will have it at times easier than it was probably actually thought (the final bosses I eg defeated by I relentlessly spammed him with fireballs - a finger on the fireball hotkey, two more on the corresponding potion hotkeys - such a thing must not be easy).
Whoever lines up clever, is here no problems getting through. Unfortunately, the game also no replayability in the form of higher levels of difficulty and the like. And the scope for a '' once through and take it all in '' - Title generally fall a little short. All of which you should be aware of if you want to define the game.

A multiplayer mode is also offered by the way, but that I did not deal as a solo player.

Graphics, sound and presentation:
=========================

Note: The game can be also with 3D character models play, but unfortunately, they have to be disabled on XP in order to start the program.
This paragraph of the review therefore relates only to the pure 2D representation of graphics.

The graph is presented in an isometric perspective with an image resolution of 640x480. There are here and there to discover some really nice touches, like the carcass of a giant fish or the scattered remains of a gigantic statue.
The spell effects and the optically visible equipment modifications are to be mentioned positively. However, it must also be said that the title for a game from 1999 bit too pixelated fails.
The few days later published Septerra Core offered as example a lot more for the eye. The polygon models of game characters a little Tick act here and there too bulky, a shortcoming which is precisely this, however, made up for by the great animations.
Very strange are the three really great render sequences are pervaded by ugly strip, but that may be due to the XP Wurschtelei that was needed to get the game up and running.
All in all, I found the graphics as well, but by no means outstanding.

When sound siehts similar, he is good and consistent, but it remains an absolutely nothing hanging in the head. Only the fantastic intro theme you should definitely once to heart.
In the speech there, except that one or two inconsequential NPC's not just shine with good voice acting, but nothing to complain about. Most speakers were well chosen and do a clean job.
Really beautiful, however, are the sounds that give the monsters and enemies of themselves. Whether the roar of a dragon, or the Asian-sounding fight sounds of the Ninjas, one feels here well entertained.

In terms of presentation, however, the criticism is bad. Unfortunately, there are too many shortcomings to be found within the game.
This begins with faulty flame animations to continue (the flames are shown in a black outline, which looks very incomplete) is in some wrong or not set to music sets and ends at the aforementioned cut out material that is likely to even notice the biggest newbie.
No, you can tell easily that the title was hastily thrown on the market, and this is reflected, of course, negatively affect the overall presentation a. Thumbs down.

Bugreport:
========

Unfortunately I do some really nasty bugs are here come across:

The worst was that the XP-exclusive bug that freezes the game, so that you have to close the program via Task Manager (if that is in Vista and Windows 7 as well, I can not tell you).
This bug occurs sometimes in fighting on when an opponent removes among other things There's nothing you could do about it except to save regularly.

Bug no. 2 is for harmless.
In the third bosses, the Ogrog champion, just this fight will not start, if the audience begins with open menus with the Ogrog King. The solution to this is simply to close the menus to the beginning of the boss fight.

Bug no. 3 is the slope of the bunch.
In Cave dungeon, there is a switch puzzle: There have five switches are switched to open five iron gates. However, two switches are bugged, they teleport Locke before the body of the door which should be opened, resulting in a switch to the fact that you end up in a permanent impasse and can no longer continue playing.
The other '' switch Teleport '', however, brings us to our destination, so that you can still move forward.
Only stupid that our character is invisible after transport and, consequently, can not be spotted by the opponents (the way to eliminate a nice cheat to the local bosses safely).
But this state can be canceled by the magic '' Teleport '' applies.

Apart from these three bugs me are in this patched version that ran under the operating system Windows XP, no further notice.
It must always decide for themselves whether this is reasonable or not.
The XP-Freeze Bug I will, however, not be included in the final results, as the game was now not even programmed for XP (otherwise I would have taken off well 1-1.5 points in the final classification. Keep that in mind when you consider takes the title on XP to play!).

Pro and con:
=============

Pro:
- Dynamic, autonomous combat system
- Interesting main character
- Great Maintheme the soundtrack
- The rigorous application systems in magic, level-ups and abilities

Contraindications:
- Gecancelte content
- Poor compatibility with modern operating systems
- Despite some patch bugged
- Places quite immature Difficulty
- No highlights regarding story and scenario

Conclusion:
====

Revenant is a decent action RPG that suffers primarily at gecancelten content and lack of finishing touches.
Blame borne by the Publisher Eidos Interactive, the programmers of Cinematix Studios denied the opportunity to put the game completely finished. While still offering the title some nice highlights how the combat system, but it is just too obvious that something did not go quite round. Everywhere one stumbles over mistakes and remains of what the game should be in its original form again.
I do not want to know how bad the people have felt at Cinematix considering what Eidos has screwed up here. All the more impressive, however, it is still the one, though just barely, good title has become of it.
My respect for the Cinematix Studios, and my contempt for Eidos Interactive.

Revenant under Windows XP:
=======================

Ah yes, Revenant is one of the games the most rumzicken under XP.
After some Internet research and syrons expertise is but I managed to get the game up and running yet.
And here our little guide:

Normal install 1. Playing with the first CD.
It is then already asked if you want to start it, but it works (yet).

2. Direct the folder of Revenant, which always results in installations, one adds a another folder, the simple "CD" is.

3. In those same "CD" folder to copy the entire contents of the pure second CD.
To make sure that even possibly hidden files are copied, we do the following:
- Right-click on the CD / DVD drive
- Select "Open". Now you can see all the files that are on the CD.
- Then you can let run up in the window various commands via the drop-down menu ("File", "Edit", etc.).
- Now select "Tools" -> "Folder Options ..." -> "View" -> "Show hidden files and folders".
Here you should select "Show hidden files and folders" and confirm with "Apply" and "OK".
- Now you can simply copy the entire contents and paste them into the folder "CD" of "Revenant" folder.

4. Now you will patch the game to version 1.22.
(Pay attention to the correct patch for the appropriate version to use, so no US patch for the German version).

5. Now in the folder of "Revenant" the 'Configuration Settings' change:
In the first block there is the third lowest:
MoviePath = "[CDROM]"
This line is changed to:
MoviePath = ". \ CD"
(In the two quotes and slash pay, every effort must be transferred correctly!)
Software3D = No
This line is also changed, namely in:
Software3D = Yes
Do not forget after the changes to save (Ctrl + S)!

6. still configure the .exe file in the folder Revenant now.
Right click on exe -> "Properties" -> "compatibility" -> Check "program in compatibility mode for:" -> 'Windows 95' 'and then the whole thing with "Apply" and "OK".

7. The Last whereupon still must pay attention, the game has to be started only on the Exe in the program folder.
Otherwise, the configuration settings will be cleared and the game does not start.
