Quite useful product with little weaknesses

Using the KVM Switch ATEN allows two computers alternately on the same keyboard and mouse use and the same picture and sound of both computers to select only one output device. In the model the CS692 connection via HDMI ports occurs.

The hardware is solid, both the cable and the plugs have a thick insulation. The cables run directly out of the KVM switch and are long enough to place the unit on the floor under the desk with 1.20m. On the KVM switch there are two LSD lights that indicate which of the two connected computers it is currently connected. Switching works on a small button, which is connected via a thin cable to the KVM switch and can be easily positioned on the desk.

The installation will be trouble without instructions supplied. An extra installation software is not necessary, because the necessary drivers are installed automatically by the operating system. Simply connect the HDMI connector and the connectors for audio, mouse and keyboard, which are each available in two different styles, with the two computers and the monitor, and off you go. Switching will take just 1 second, with only the monitor and the sound switches and after 3 more seconds, then the mouse and keyboard.

Although switching works reliably in total, there are some problems. Sometimes the KVM switch depends on between two computers and you have to reboot. In addition, the image signal is temporarily too weak, so that the monitor flickers or is black even for a few seconds. This flickering occurs strikingly often on when watching movies or working with graphics programs. Mac systems are apparently more prone to this problem than Windows systems. I have connected the KVM switch between a Dell PC and a Mac Mini and the flickering only occurs when Mac Mini. When switching from the mouse, keyboard and sound I have, however, found no problems, only the sound is a little quieter than normal.

Conclusion: The installation is simple and the hardware handles well. The price is compared to similar products in midfield. For home use, I recommend the KVM switch entirely, for professional use, it is in my opinion too unreliable. Especially for working with graphics programs, the device is only conditionally suitable. The KVM switch is thus a quite useful product for those who want to use two computers using only one monitor at home to save space.
