Aristotle at Mont Saint-Michel: The Greek roots of Christian Europe (Paperback)

Customer Review

Sylvain Gouguenheim, professor of medieval history at the ENS de Lyon, is a historian working with raw data that is known to place them in the context of their creation, emergence, diffusion.

It operates with diligence and scientific spirit that each of the data sets rigorously. His work is impressive quality. It also opens new work prospects in particular the importance of the Christian communities of Asia Minor under the authority of Islam.

This book clearly casts a stir. It's the same every time it is shown that the Middle Ages was not a period "obscurantist", he was prolific in producing books, translation, copy books, the dispute, the spiritual radiation (I greet in particular the excellent passage on the Carolingian Renaissance). It's the same every time that History reveals that the Catholic Church has allowed, facilitated, encouraged the development of science in contrast to conventional wisdom that highlight minority behavior, hurtful certainly, for the Church falsely generalize (see The truth about the Galileo affair). it is the same every time that the West is justly defended (The sob of the white man, to end the colonial repentance The slave trade: global history test etc.).

"Aristotle at Mont Saint Michel" is not a dependent book. It is a book that exposes with great intelligence the dissemination of Greek philosophy was enabled by the radiation literate Christians by the Roman Curia, the monastery, the Mont Saint Michel which housed the first translator of works Aristotle, Jacques Venice, and indirectly by the aggressive policy, warrior of Islam -the Arab invasions, Islamic, leading to the destruction of non deemed sacred books and the flight of a Christian elite.

It will also further as it shows that the vaunted Arab medicine has historically based its origins among Christians and Jews, that this medicine was enriched Greek contributions, Hindu and Persian; this synthesis being experienced by a Syrian elite Christian. For 3 centuries, 8 generations of the same family, Christian, were doctors of the Baghdad caliph!

The book of Sylvain Gouguenheim illustrates many examples that support a new view of history and the contribution of Islam in the opening to the intelligence of the Western world.

The Christian roots of Europe are obvious. The spread of Greek texts, reference language of the liturgy, is safe.

This exceptional book historian calls others.
