I Had-been wanting to read an historical novel and this one Seemed to-have Good reviews, as can be seen profit from my assessment I Was bitterly disappointed. I Had Realized That There Would Be battles, bloodshed, plundering, rape ... but, apart from Unfortunately the battle scenes there is absolutely nothing in this novel.
The young hero Uhtred, the son of a nobleman in 9th century England is ten years old is captured When He And Then adopté by a Viking (or Dane) in present-day York. He is to be a warrior Taught by Ragnar and learns the ways and Their Viking gods. Ragnar's philosophy Involves instilling the killer instinct In His warriors as young as possible, so That They Will Become "lethal". - Unfortunately, this "philosophy" is still being "Taught" today !!
As far as I am Concerned this "hero" is nothing more than a mercenary. I Had beens expecting Some Soul-searching On His hand as he switches from one side loyalty to the other, from Vikings to Saxons. In no way Does the author present us with a complex human being white, he is just a sword-wielding gold pin-wielding killing machine.
I happened to learn que la author, for personal Reasons, holds a grudge against Christians and the way he keeps harping on what are for _him_ negative aspects of Christianity just decreases His Credibility. The Christians are superstitious, weak,
unattractive, runny-nosed fools believing in miracles whereas we, the readers, are Supposed to prefer the strong, handsome pagans Relying on human sacrifices and auguries !!
If there is none to be made positive Would it concern the author's depiction of life in the 9th century. I did appreciate
His description of the splendid ships qui for the Vikings are famous (and with qui They Discovered America !!)
This is the first book I have read by this author and I do not INTEND to Read Any More.
