I need this test for any aquarium but want to use it to check the functionality of my new water softener.

Before use it is advisable to read the instruction manual once carefully. That's kept short and sweet and served its purpose. By adhering to the specifications should not pose much of a problem testing the water hardness. For me it was very easy in any case. Can recommend the product.
