Sun Bear Concerts (Audio CD)

Customer Review

Whenever the first sounds of "Kyoto" resound, uses a magical atmosphere that ideally - if I am disturbed - can last for six and a half hours. So long is the wonderful music that is united on the "Sun Bear Concerts" CDs. Five (almost), this includes complete concerts, Keith Jarrett gave in November 1976 in Japan three separate additions to a sixth CD this fantastic box. It was a wise decision at the time of Manfred Eicher and Jarrett himself, at least five of the eight then played concerts in Japan to bring out together and not just a small selection. There is no doubt Jarrett was at that time at the peak of his creativity and creativeness. The "Sun Bear Concerts" and the resulting nine months later concert in Vermont are of such a fabulous density, power, elegance and virtuosity of such complexity and maturity, they are among the musical moments of the entire 20th century , From "Vermont Solo" there is unfortunately only a little obsolete VHS, a bootleg CD and Youtube films in rather modest quality. Here ECM has asked Mr. Eicher, when there is a new release?
Only once, in 1991, the "Vienna Concert", but there different stored stylistically, Keith Jarrett can call this absolute genius in free improvisation on this level as the "Sun Bear Concerts".
Of course, at six and a half hours of piano music to listen to passages that are stressful, withdraw all too easy consumption. But only in the context of expressionistic, sometimes atonal acting lines who can develop "lighter", lyrical or jazzy themes, the gentle, almost as delicate passages appearing before again swirled in different motives. Yet there is a common thread from Kyoto through to Sapporo Concert, and who is listening attentively, recognizes, despite all the differences of the respective moods of the concerts that are repeated motifs, as quotes taken up, develop installed somewhere other than set pieces. To pursue this and to discover again new such linkages at every hearing, constitutes the true enjoyment of the "Sun Bear Concerts" to a considerable extent.
Should we lift something? The plethora of themes "Kyoto, Part I"? The wonderfully eclectic sound of "Osaka, Part I"? The insanely beautiful dream trips of "Nagoya, Part II"? The powerfully expressive conclusion of "Tokyo, Part II"? The airy, jazzy lines of "Sapporo, Part I"? The glorious to die for adding the Tokyo concert? Not necessary! All enjoy!
