Customer Review

Small supplement
If you watch videos on Youtube-Board, you will find very good as Yannick DELONGLEE. But it dates from November 2013.
But since then, there has been a technological revolution: Some brands like Sony, Lumix, Olympus, Fujinon, to some extent Canon and Nikon rigor have placed on the market for ultra efficient and very compact cameras with big sensors with a high-performance AF, extraordinary software etc .... AND ESPECIALLY with interchangeable lenses and are completely ignored in these videos. In short, these cameras have a semi-Professional level and even in some cases professional but can be handled by amateurs and in some cases by beginners. Their performances are absolutely comparable to SLR, some of the same (like A7) much higher.

Here are the most important in my opinion (I've also procured because it worth it unless the A7 and A7s II):
Sony A6000, Sony A7 II A7R Sony, Sony A7s
GH4 Lumix, Lumix GM5 (which is here in question)
EM10 OEM Olympus, Olympus OEM EM1
X-Pro1 Fujinon Fujinon X-T1

All Sony A7 have a full frame sensor, the resolution reaches up to 36 MP (A7R) and sensitivity is extraordinary (A7s makes the fotos in almost complete darkness)
But the price is also professional (about 2,000 Euro for the housing).

With APS-C sensor a little smaller as found in Sony DSLR note the A6000 and two Fujinon. Again performance comparable to SLR (except, of course, very high Professional range that go up to 10,000 Euro). But frankly, take a magnifying glass or make abnormal magnification to find the differences.
The A6000 is very cheap and automation that make it interesting for fans and even beginners with a little experience.
For cons, the Fuji - and especially the X-Pro1 - require a good level of experience and should be used often enough to master the many commands.

With even a little smaller sensor (half diagonally from full size) called Micro Four Thirds (MFT) the Lumix and Olympus, including GM5.
MFT has fewer drawbacks that one might think and has advantages for large focal lengths beyond of about 100mm. MFT is significantly larger than the sensor Sonx RX10 and RX100 are excellent cameras with 20 MP resolution, therefore absolutely not be neglected! MFT cameras usually offer 16 MP, good resistance Foley, excellent quality very close picture of reflex and often higher. Some of these cameras are used as a second housing by renowned professionals in studio, outdoors, weddings, reports, Wildlife, Outdoor etc ... fotografie GH4 at the speed of a machine gun and made videos that no 4K Reflex can currently do, even for the price of a Mercedes.

Personally, I have 4 Reflex but with MFT 6 interchangeable lenses and are the cameras I use the most.
I advise you to look into this very recent evolution and look closely cameras above unfortunately ignored in the videos consulting dating a year or two.

The GM5 (most recently available) is a special case among the MFT. It is an absolutely complete camera (except that it did that a dial on the rear) no bigger than a pack of cigarettes. It is necessarily comes with a 12-32mm which corresponds to 24-64mm. The brightness f / 3.0-5.6 is not extra, focal length min. is 20 cm, the DMW-BLH7E 680 mAh battery.
Now if we put the package and mounts deus Zuiko PRO, ie 12-40mm f / 2.8 and 40-150mm f / 2.8 + comes with converter (together about 2,200 Euro), we obtain a system with extraordinary performance anything in any conditions since it covers a range equivalent to 24-420mm with f / 2.8 throughout!
If the price makes you tremble, I can say for comparison that with my Sony A7R and my Zeiss 70-200 F / 4, I can only go up to 200mm and f / 4.0 for 4,000 Euro, therefore GM5 and Zuiko 40-150mm PRO 1,400 Euro, that is the sales!
This comparison is not really honest, but if you are not really professional, you will not find big differences in the results up to A4.

At the Photokina 2014 in Cologne in September, the press s' is run on the LX100, the G7X and FZ1000, or a posteriori, I think the real star is the GM5 and I'm glad of the have added to my list of commands.
My favorite small compact expert remains the RX100 III because it will (with electronic booster) slightly beyond 100mm, which is sufficient for everyday principle, but it would end. The GM5 goes up to 420mm with the Zuiko PRO, but which requires a rather large bag to carry this couple. So there is a small downside.

To return to the comparison with a Reflex early this discussion, I love my Nikon D7100, my Pentax K-30 waterproof or others, but frankly in comparison with the tiny GM5 it n 'there apas hesitation, c is it that I would take. Except of course, if it is to make a giant postcard or a double page print on glossy paper, or I would choose a full sized box with 24 or 36 MP, wide angle Zeiss lens and a tripod.
So you see that this case offe lot of possibilities for a price that can be described as affordable if you're seriously interested in photography.
All bine really informed or competent specialists will tell you that this kind of device has the advantages of an SLR without the drawbacks.

--------------------------------------------

After the Photokina 2014 in Cologne, I operated a major renewal in my equipment Photo / video:
I have sold all my Sony camcorders including the CX900 and the latest Panasonic cameras as well as some the Lumix LX5, GH2, Canon EOS-M and Nikon D5000.
These sales were more than offset by acquisitions as Lumix GH4, LX100, FZ1000, the GM5 (discussed here) Canon G7X, which come complete Sony RX10, RX100 III A7R, A6000, HX400V, Lumix GH3, GX7 , LX7, Fuji X-Pro1 und T1, EM10 and EM1 Olympus, Nikon D7100, Pentax Kr and K-30 etc.
so if we except a few professional housings to thousands of Euro, one can say that I have all the modern high-performance systems from the compact Nikon P300, P340, Olympus Stylus until full Formats top game.
This allows me to choose with confidence the interesting systems without considering the possible removal or climatic conditions to test absolutely too short in time devices or often very complex objectives.
This diversity and about 50 years of experience in PHOTOGRAPHIC all climatic zones of the planet and dozens of cameras (from a Voigtlander Bellows in the 60s to the most up to date models of major brands) give me a rather different horizons young people working professionally since 2-5 years, has handled only 5 or 6 systems, not always the most recent and try to advise beginners or amateurs.
Then they get stuck because they attempt to explain the material and all the implications the same time.

Now the technical fotografique is like a nuclear reaction: If you start a neutron, exponential consequences will immediately react on every aspect or all surrounding atoms.
Let me explain: If you talk of the sensor, it is mandatory to also make a detour on the dive, the sensitivity / brightness, sound effects, focal, depth of field, angle, bokeh, mass data, speed etc. because everything is chained and confused.
So finally the itinerary explanation is inextricable and the amateur or the beginner who seeks advice how to choose the best equipment and invest his money is ultimately KO track and in the fog that before.
I think the best way to advise a beginner or evaluate equipment, that is to approach the problem by asking: What would you do or what is particularly designed this case and this goal.

So come in now to GM5.
The essential quality is that this case happens with the goal comes in the pocket of trousers. So we do not train a bag with you and GM5 is a mobile accessory that you can take anywhere.
The second thing to know is that the goal is interchageable. We can do almost anything with this case.
The 12-32mm included in the price is very compact and sufficient to cover family events, holidays, excursions and everyday situations.
But it does not stop there: Thanks to MFT lenses available can for example
- Take photos of wide angle landscapes, canyons, in narrow premises and shabby light conditions with for example, the Zuiko 12mm f / 2.0
- Do portraits or night scenes with the Zuiko 12-40mm PRO f / 2.8
- Fotografier the streets, museums, churches in n 'any condition with the Leica 25mm f / 1.4
- Go on an expedition in an African nature park and capturing rhino, gazelles, giraffes or elephants distant PRO Zuiko 40-150mm with the f / 2.8 (and delivered with converter which ultimately gives you a focal length equivalent to 400mm over).
etc.
So with this camera, you can do almost anything, provided you have enough pocket money to pay for the above objectives. Frankly speaking, the two Zooms Zuko cost a PRO currently around 2.500 Euro. But ... can be used also with a Lumix GH4 videos for Professional or Olympus OMD-EM1 or any Lumix (except FZ1000 a fixed lens).

So if it's like this, why is it that everyone does not buy a GM5?

Well, because honestly, even if the GM5 sensor is much higher in terms of mm² (area) to that of a Sony RX, it transmits a maximum of 16 Mp in the microprocessor.
This is more than enough in principle, but below the 20 MP Sony RX 100 small or large RX10 with smaller sensors. In theory, therefore, the pixels have more space which should give a better picture quality. In practice I 've yet to see any difference.
Furthermore the GM5 is not as fast as GH4 that costs twice but guaranteed you have the instantaneous impeccable sports in flight, your dog in action or unruly children etc. With GM5, it's more random.
But the image quality is outstanding, that is very clear with brilliant colors and countless possibiltés. Clarity is equivalent to that of the human eye, the AF is quick and safe (except on homogeneous surfaces or he hesitates a bit), the viewfinder is not by far the very best, but for the price, it is very honorable.
In short, even when it was worth the money, even if the GM5 takes its time to start (you have to remove the cover, remove the lens manually etc.).
But the best part is of course the possibility of adapting other goals that can transform this rather average camera with the lens comes with a super powerful device, capable of close-ups of 150 elephants m at a Safari or crew during a sailboat race etc.

But it is not with this camera you will make pictures like those postcards large format of a tourist port where you can almost see what newspapers are sold at the kiosk on the seafront next to the restaurant. For that, you'll need a Nikon D800 or a Sony A7s with Objektif and tripod that will search through the 6,000 Euro.

Now there are other aspects as secondary seal. If you want to make pictures in a storm on board a trawler rather buy a Pentax K-30 with a goal WR (water resistant), it is not much more expensive, but it is more massive.

The GM5 compact hybrid is good for beginners, because it is simple to use and has a very sophistqué software so if you choose the right options (preset scenes) you will always have good results (90%) .
It has a "smart auto" option that works very well and also 19 pre-programmed modes for all situations. For those who want to make the foto seriously all the usual manual options. To be truly pro or semi-pro, missing a second wheel and direct control over or under exposure as the A7 Sony or Fuji X-Pro or X-T1. But in its price class, the GM5 is without fear and without reproach, and very versatile for both ignorant that for photographers who juggle paramêtres without thinking as we ride by bike.
So if you are a beginner or even ignorant, but later progressing, master some vectors such as iris, shutter speed, ISO or depth of field, you can upgrade without changing your camera.

Universal camera does not exist. For this reason I have all kinds of all brands in all price and I constantly changing. But GM5's still a more flexible.
There are also other alternatives like the Sony RX100, The Lumix LX100, the Canon G7X etc. without interchangeable lenses.
Now if a big camera does not bother you and you do not want to change lenses, I recommend the Sony HX400V as bridge or Lumix FZ1000. There it is all inclusive!

On the internet there are many videos of good Samaritans who recommend you purchase a low-reflex game to start.
I have a half dozen reflex and downs of game not worth it, because in the meantime, hybrid and high level mirrorless cameras are at least equivalent performance and much less cumbersome.
For good as SLR Nikon D7100, you have to pay the price and it does not for beginners. In addition, you should spend in the short term at least 3 times the price of housing for lenses and accessories. And after you are hostage of the brand.
If you are new, rather spend your money for a good compact - Even if the objective is limited to 100mm - bridge.comme or 2 indicated above. I can assure you that the possibilities will surprise you.
Excellent for a compact with fixed lens (quality Zeiss or Leica like), must still have between 500 and 800 Euro.,
For a very good bridge takes about 500 Euro.
But remember: When no one buys cheap, buys twice!
