Customer Review

Unfortunately predominate with 12: 2, the negative anomalies :-(

Negatives:
1) Unfortunately, you can not say for sure whether the installed hard drives have the Idle3 timer problem, neither Google nor WD itself bring the information if and at what production date WD these firmware settings bug has been fixed. So remains only to test the nerves and requires the connection of non-HD (s) to a PC. (Maybe it is even if you go via SSH on the device). The in my device not park the heads after insane 8 seconds (a cyclic access eg every 15 sec. Would mean that after 52 days of operation, the 300,000 specified Load Cycles (park and head are reaching back to the platter) ... ), but in my copy the plates to park sensibly after about 2 to 6 minutes. (With production date September 2014)
The Idle3 Timer "Bug" is indeed a firmware (Einstelleungs) problem of HDDs, but you have it the NAS manufacturer WD blame yet, since the HDDs just come from WD. (It's the WD Red series installed)
Hello WD: /WD: You would relieve the customers and potential customers VERY CALM and if you eg AUTHENTIC (!!!) could predict / would that all date from X produced the plates Idle3 timer on Y minutes (or higher ) have set. Until that does not happen, unfortunately, every customer through every WD Red drive itself towards it must abchecken. Surely buy simply by many people at the competition.

2.) WD seems to have a large and demanded legal department. You get during installation (and even so about 3 to 5 slightly different licensing and legal instructions texts displayed when first starting the Android app that you have to nod. It is true, for example, to not participate in class actions against WD. Although I doubt that the is final, it could indeed equal to any Sue are forbidden, but usually is the law on the ideas that grab overzealous lawyers etc. in Terms.
It's annoying and makes a questionable impression. Synology has at least in their Android apps (which by the way are all much better rated than the MyCloud app), for example, not necessary.

3.) The purpose of PC software reveals itself to me not quite intuitive, it looks first in about as the view in Windows Explorer with insanely huge icons. (On pointless huge seem the GUI layout department to stand by WD, see MyCloud dashboard in the browser)
In (not Windows Style Guide compliant placed) menu of the PC app which is of Snychronisation, but happens when clicking: nothing. Intuitive is different! It would, for example, expect to open a setup dialog. Since I mainly use Linux I have the first not further investigated.

4.) I have connected about 30 minutes before a USB HDD (2TB, completely full vA photos, but also video). The same has begun to rödeln, I was afraid she would unasked formatted. Fortunately not. You could access it via SMB protocol, but (for now) nothing is displayed in a number of photo folders. PANIC! So googled how to log off cleanly. Aha: the USB button above the WD-Dashboard (via web browser). So deregistered. Then the same again clicked INFO for USB disk. Then hung everything. But do not think that was triggered by clicking on INFO. Thought that Unsubscribe takes about 5 to max. 30 sec. (One is pain tested by Windows, Linux usually 1 to 5 seconds) --- But you can "beat": it took about 3-5 minutes until the USB drive has stopped rödeln.
BUT THE HAMMER insolence is yet to come: now rödeln a) the internal plates of My Cloud Mirror SINCE over 35 minutes UNWARRANTED around. AND to top it all IS MY CLOUD EITHER VIA SMB OR VIA BROWSER approachable !!! EINSELF! RUMBRÜLL!
Ah, now so, after entertaining 40 minutes the case has finally stopped UNWARRANTED herumzurödeln. Via SMB again accessible and readable data, and at least the login message appears in the browser. But not log it. In addition, the power LED flashes blue. An update it can not be that I have a precaution off (default: night at 3:00), but of course I was the first (so approximately on 06.03.2015, ie just a week ago) the latest firmware (V1.05.30 ) partly filled!
The 40-minute rattle of hard drives may have been no Bildinizierung now actually because the external disk so only about the first 5 minutes was connected them. At the latest after the separation there's indeed nothing more to index ...

5.) When testing ways to change from RAID1 are the processes and messages "creative". In addition, first Rumgerödel, you think that would be formatted when releasing from the RAID1 HDD. If you then confirm that you want to create a new drive, there is talk that the hard drives (plural) would be formatted. However, it is correctly formatted only one, on the first data of the RAID1 retained. In addition, the warning comes, that data may be lost only after the Formatiervorgsng has already been started. Very useful ...

6.) The web interface wasted thanks vielzuvielerund MUCH zugro he ß A bst ä nde about 75% of the available space on the monitor unused, but also by the fact that only about 70% of the width of a 4: 3 monitor or, only 60% of the width of a 16:. 10 monitor can be used.
After all, keeping the submenus in boundaries (I have to scroll down rather via a browser as always back on an issue between multiple sub-pages and change ago)

7.) The stand-by power consumption is an outrage: 5.8 Watt! (Shut down 0.2 Watt. Both plates at about 13 to 15 watts, which is OK) The plates are at a room temperature of 19 ° C all the 56 ° C warm, ie during the summer is in an attic apartment with 65-70 ° C HDD temperature expected. According to hard drive firmware are recommended max. 60 ° C, as unacceptable exceeding the hard drive firmware draws the line at -40 ° C or above 80 ° C.

8.) After logging off the USB drive and then 40-minute Rödeln the internal disks and now blue flashing power LED, turn the internal plates still (usually triggers a spin down after about 10 minutes). I interpret this as a crash. So to connect external USB hard drives seem extremely risky to one, at this point I must confess the firmware does not even have a pre-alpha status. By connecting any USB drives, but it seems to work.

9) the time until the device goes into stand-by can not adjust it. You can only activate the stand-by or switch to non-stop operation. Ie stand-by after 10 minutes, or never. PLEASE: how difficult it may be, instead of "ON / OFF" in the Dashboard incorporate the ability to type in a time (or for that matter, by Slider).!?!
I think 30 to 60 minutes for the most sense because the device (Lebensdauerverringernd) is exposed so possibly a little less temperature fluctuations, yet in the (clearly voracious) -Stand-by is when it is no longer used.

10.) One can obviously only the device via web interface shutdown and only network separation + Again plug in again start.

11) I think that putting up solid vertical Platen for bad for life, this is the bearing mounted on only one side. (If you look when unscrewing a HD, make PLEASE ONLY WITH OLD BROKEN HDs!) As always, a force 90 ° to the direction of rotation.
In fact, the only HD that I have even obsessed, and who no longer, or only wanted to start with Zicken also the only one that I've owned that ran vertically (in a Fujitsu-Siemens PC of the Pentium 3 era ). All my other, sometimes even older HDs have no problems!
On top of the upright HDs drawn up with only one plate there are IMHO especially so narrow that they can be very easy to accidentally umschmeißen. Very worrying. I have such a WD MyBook HD and operated NIE standing.
When My Cloud Mirror it's just stupidly so that the electronics of both plates facing inwards so that a reclining operation would lead to one of the HDs is "upside down".
I suppose purely logical thought, however, that is likely to be healthier for the camp than on edge because the weight completely lying to the axis on one of 90 ° and evenly distributed mainly sides of the bearing.

12) At the very first turn on could be seen in "Notifications" some messages, such as "Startup After Power Failure" --- which means that at WD in manufacturing the devices will not shut down cleanly, but simply the juice is hot pluggable. (The machine was purchased in shrink-wrapped cardboard and it was the first start for my part), okay, maybe the system is designed robust enough that you can do it that way.
NEGATIVE, however, that since the update to firmware V1.05.30 no einizger event entry more can be seen.

13) Neutral:
The noise DEVELOPMENT is impossible or turn a blind eye lounge Suitable unless you look at a movie theater volume (except for movies with lots of low-level segment).
Equipped My My Cloud mirror with 2x 4TG produced a running noise of the hard drives that as a very quiet air flow sounds, relatively pleasant discreet, that is still the least conspicuous. On the desk unfortunately come to a very clear Brummgegräusch (is normal, that makes even my 2.5 "-Toshiba-HD), but that disappears, because the device is minimally inclined and is only available on the two right rubber feet. On both left rubber feet is the noise. So the best at something extremely massive (best floor, but this only goes if you have no children or a "safe zone" on the ground has) provide.
The access sounds (especially when many distributed access) crowd but then very clearly to the fore. Here I would like to be able to adjust in the dashboard, such as sweeping the read / Leseköüfe to their target position are "shot". Currently the IBM Deskstar series (which then became Death Star and IBM Zang the HDD business to sell), so as approximately around 2000 around, it gave IBM a tool with which one was able to close. The even worked with boards from other manufacturers. It slows the access time (but not the sustained native transfer rate), making it the access sounds considerably quieter and has probably also the mechanics and causes less vibration, which should also be more life-promoting.
WD: Please integrate the appropriate menu item in the Dashboard. (I will have to sign in once WD forum and create a Wish List there)
The integrated fan runs almost never (that should be made adjustable IMHO, I'd prefer always to let him turn a little if the HDs run to keep this cooler). So far I have heard him only during the boot process (probably a self-diagnosis), not even after about 10 hours total test of the hard drives he ran (or if then extremely slow, but I think a) that I would have been out heard him and b) that the HDDs with fan would not have come to 56 ° C at 19 ° ambient temperature)

Positives:
14) The data transfer is fast, but that goes without saying for such a device. Fast, HDDs, Gigabit Ethernet, the CPU stops with.

15) The price: The NAS hardware cost vs. only about 60 euros extra. the installed WD-plates alone. Too bad that there per copy sold seem to be left only 10-30 cents for the software, with 1-2 euros per unit, they would certainly have significantly improved. Unlike Synology likely WD can transfer the cost on many more devices, allowing WD IMHO 2 software development costs per unit could achieve that for which Synology eg 100 needed per unit because it (I suspect at least) only about one fiftieth of the number like WD sell.

PS: the plate was bought at NBB, since delivery time was 4-8 weeks on Amazon, so no Verified.

PS2: energy consumption: (determined by Reichelt KD-302, test winner in a ct, very precise in switching power supplies and complex and small loads, unfortunately no longer available)
Driven, LAN cable separately: 0.4 Watt
Driven, LAN cable connected (gigabit link): 0.9 Watt
Standby: 5.4 watts (IMHO * EXTREMELY * much, IMHO would 1.5W max 2.5W appropriate today even really more 0.5W to 1.0W.)
Operation: 13,5..15W (which in turn is OK)
Tarnishing the HDs (they run one after the other): briefly up to about 26 watts when the first HD is already rotating and the second straight start.

The power supply is of Ktec, has Efficiency Level (V) (= Roman 5), provides 12V * 3A = 36 Watts. So enough even just as for two 2.5 "-HDS without its own power supply.

PS3: The filesystem is ext4, so it can be read with any Linux for the event that the motherboard in NAS times abraucht (while HOPE maximum of one plate entrains). Who wants to be absolutely sure, you have already buy two separate NAS and the sync. This must then be no RAID1 Mirror.
