*** AIM OF PURCHASE *** Replacing an existing - some elderly - hi-fi CD player by a multimedia device with CD, MP3 and DVD functionality. The DVD / JPEG image is to be output on a PC monitor, as no TV is available. DivX functionality is not required. *** Device Properties *** HOUSING / DISPLAY / MECHANICAL: The housing is gratifying processed flat and tidy; heating of the housing during operation is not recorded; the chromed controls on the mirrored front see something "cheap" from, the reflective coating makes it difficult to read the display in bright sunlight; the transparent drawer is working very delicate and acts very stable; the operating volume of the drive is small, only have when loading the media briefly heard rattling noises. OSD / OPERATION / REMOTE CONTROL: The on-screen display menu is clear and unambiguous, the default language is German; the remote control looks a bit clunky and is of average functionality; playing CDs and MP3-CDs will be trouble without attached monitor. MEDIA PLAYER / QUALITY: So far, only purchase DVDs, purchase and home-burned CDs and MP3 CDs were played by me. Was denied (yet) a medium; the audio playback through the stereo outputs is high not quite to that of a HiFi CD player approach, but it is still acceptable; DVD playback has taken place exclusively on a computer monitor that was connected to the VGA output of the HSD 202, the playback quality was - not least by the "Progressive Scan" feature that is supported in VGA mode - excellent, ie the image was very sharp and consistently smooth. Add-ons: The device is supplied as a three gifts at: Video cable (yellow coded), remote control with batteries, CD with photos, video and audio editing functions, promotional DVD of an American automaker *** AVERAGE PURCHASE *** The acquisition of HSD 202 has consistently paid off, the video and audio performance is more than satisfactory, the equipment complies with the above-defined requirements perfectly, the price-performance ratio is good to very good. Conclusion: 4 of 5 stars (not 5 star due to lack of DivX function and minor processing / design deficiencies concerning the controls and the remote control.)
