Osama (Paperback)

Customer Review

Norman Spinrad (1940), one can retain two major trends: the one where he revolutionized science fiction with others during the seventies (Iron Dream, Jack Baron and lEternité the latter being a precursor for the cyberpunk, what is not is a thin weapons) and that where it is considering the future of the planet in anticipation often well documented (Blue like an Orange The Plagues Years and of course the two volumes of lectures Spring Russian). Osama (2010) clearly belongs to the second vein but singularly lacking inspiration.

In the near future, Osama is a child of the Caliphate (basically, the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa) among others, living under Sharia law but with access to Western works literally parachuted on chips containing music and movies, all individually consumed . Attendance of these works, Osama will design the desire to become a spy of the Caliphate in the West. He will leave for France under cover of a renegade son who embezzled money from the family. From this will be born the best pages of the novel, those where Spinrad imagine the confrontation of a young man growing up in the Sharia with the Western way of life and, especially, the other members of the "sleeper cell".

From encounter to encounter, here, it's potential "agent provocateur" embedded with "Beurs" in various actions, from tagging of Our Lady to tougher actions Completion slippage that will launch the most purely in equities terrorists, to the point of shaving half of Paris and win a known nickname of the entire planet: Osama Fire. Spinrad could have stopped there and imagine the repression that would follow, the reactions of the Caliphate, léventuelle questioning of faith, in short lislam in France after the attacks dune rare violence. But no: he imagines a dominoes game of the Caliphate which shows that the objective of actions in France would unmanned Accession of the Dar Al Islam in Turkey

After that we follow the wanderings of Osama, Europes out by the Turkish border, to Mecca in Nigeria and then return to the Caliphate for the final realization: it might be the Mahdi, the installation of which would signal the arrival of lislam in worldwide for the ultimate circumambulation around the Kaaba

All this is fairly well done and rhythmic, and narration in the first person singular allows some dives in the soul of a hadji becoming jihadi, and its many torments. Similarly, various characters encountered by Oussam throughout his adventures (we must call them) hold enlightening and sometimes contrasting. Unfortunately Spinrad actually too much for his character and even if one wants to admit that this is lanticipation the same happens to defy plausibility. So Osama Fire, after the explosion because half of Paris, manages to pass through without a single control LEUROPE didentité. Anyway, this nest Quà his final return to Mecca that he saperçoit sest that he used the same passport since the beginning

But where it really stuck, this is the Geopolitics and the considerations on terrorism. Already in the first pages Spinrad, obsessed with the "Great Satan" (the US, for whom naurait not before), forget Russia and China, quon imagine willingly ravished by a Caliphate almost at their doors. Let. On his return to Saudi, Osama seems to hear nothing more about the situation in France; its strategies in Nigeria seem a bit light (even if everyone sees him as the Porteu of "baraka", not to mention those of his command. Let's move. As for television of the Caliphate, it passes on the subjects of the stars of television, and other nonsense quon would willingly inflict Islamic Letat as a torture.

Joking aside, Spinrad share dune almost mystical vision lislam, refusing to recognize what was already clear in 2010: the terrorists, that they are Muslim or not is irrelevant, Nont no lady states that it accords to its main character. For some, it would make it the valiant champion lislam. Dun other hand, Spinrad chose a narration in the first person, implying that the reader spends about six hundred pages in the minds of Osama, accompanies his thoughts and his journey, despion dillettante quasi-Mahdi. In this sense, the novel is successful, despite some lengths. But these lengths would have benefited from being replaced by some more relevant geopolitical considerations, surprising failure on the part of the author of Spring Russian.
