I loved this novel because it describes a very unusual relationship between the protagonists. Ian, the hero can not have normal relations and was interned for many years in a terribly cruel environment. Beth is downgraded, coming from the hospice and gradually rise up the social ladder. One is the younger brother of a duke, the other is the widow of a humble pastor. Ian shows a behavior that suggests a "high functioning autism" although this diagnosis could have existed at the time of the novel. Beth is affected both by his physique, his incredible intelligence and his past sufferings. She accepts it spontaneously and intuitively understood, allowing the development of the plot. Ian, although seemingly crazy, unable to fix someone in the eye, which can leave indefinitely distracted by a lock of hair, shows a great depth of feeling. Passion is present at each meeting. I recommend this book to readers / readers wishing to delve into a story out of the box and agreeing to go with it. It is well written, well described, and I'm looking forward to meeting other Mackenzie brothers.
