Linksys RE1000 Wireless N300 Range Extender 1 Ethernet port QoS prioritization (Accessories)

Customer Review

I've bought the Extender, because I wanted to provide my TV and my Blu-Ray player with network.

I myself am computer scientist and work as a network administrator but such an illogical device has never come across me. It took me 2 hours until I understood how the device works. But now once from the front:

The device itself looks quite chic, especially with the bright Cisco logo brings it an air of professionalism to the home. The case is in so far also in order. The extender has two apertures for mains plug out. Once you can put on a grounded panel to turn the unit to hang directly into the wall socket. Or you put a hole aperture, and then use an extension cord. When the aperture, I see a risk that this could go wrong because they are very thin and the Latch to fix the clip, are not really fixed. All in all, it makes a rickety impression. Unfortunately, the device has no recesses, to hang it on the wall. That had all Linksys devices previously.

The initial setup of the device is once simple. And by that I mean the language and adjust to connect to its WiFi. In my case I have a Cisco-Linksys E1000 router. My wireless network sends the SSID, with WPA2 and MAC address filter protected. The Extender is all in wireless networks in range of. You select a network and click "Connect". Now you are the Network Key and, as in my case, you may supply the MAC address of the Extender to the router free. Zack: Connected! The extender has the same SSID as the router and amplifies the signal. So far no problem.

Now it is but go!

I would now like a wireless device to the Extender connect so this works only not even. Reason: MAC address filter. One searches in vain for the Extender settings or assistance on the subject. Only when you activate the log and look in there, you can see which device is trying to connect. Alright If we imagine that MAC addresses are indeed on the router released already so should still work. Unfortunately, it does not however exactly. The wireless clients get an IP address.

After much back and forth, I have found the reason. Each client connects to the Extender with its MAC. The extender but assigns to each a new virtual MAC MAC. This virtual MAC is forwarded to the router and only those. Of course, the router thinks: "I do not know you, you do not come in here." The Solution? To ensure that my CLient depending on location either MTI my router or can connect to the Extender, I have on the router, both the real and the virtual MAC MAC release. Now the vebundenen on the Extender clients get assigned an IP. The same is also true when I hang an Ethernet device to the Extender.

In my case, yes I wanted to make two multimedia devices in networking capabilities. Since my TV only a 11 Mbit / s WLAN has installed map and YouTube streaming rather hakelte and my Blu-ray player only has Ethernet, so I'm gone and have the extender a mini switch clamped and then behind the two multimedia devices connect to. After I released the virtual MAC address on the router, it worked with the IP. By the way: The MAC must always be enabled on the router not only from a DHCP IP to relate. Without releasing the router flileßt no traffic to the connected behind the Extender device.

At first I was amazed at how much faster my TV now could move content from the Internet. Even the YouTube Streaming went much faster and without any lag of hand. After 10 minutes, however: dead trousers. But why ?! The answer was found quickly: the Extender had lost the signal to the router. Why? Can not say the devices are about 15 meters from each other and are separated only by a drywall I. The extender has found it fast and also by itself the signal again but it kept probably not necessary that the clients also notified. If that happens just once would be so fine but unfortunately happened the churning.

My Blu-Ray player was also supplied with a fast IP and could also access YouTube. But my intention was to use BD-Live. Wrong! I tried everything but none of my BD-Live enabled Blu-Rays wanted to give me the function. Each told me that my player would not be connected to the Internet. I suspended the player but completely via Ethernet to my network I have no problems.

So. Well, the behavior of other wireless clients? A Dell netbook needs an eternity to connect to the Extender and to draw an IP. Once it is connected, the connection is unstable. Every now and then there are no more IP or simply keien connection to the DNS. After switching on and off of the Wi-Fi card to the netbook connects he prefers directly to the router, even if the signal is a bit weaker than DESS Extender.

My iPhone 4S looks not even going in to connect to the Extender. No matter what I tried, I did not manage the iPhone connects to the Extender. Curiously, my iPhone has also boycotted the router. But only until I took the extender from the power.

Another curiosity: A notebook provides two SSIDs: D
Once the mine and then another in the form as "Linksys_ExtenderXXX".
The latter is an unsecured network with which you obviously can not connect. Still, it's confusing and annoying.

In Extender itself, there are some diagnostic options. If we are to give this belief, so is the connection between him and the router snot. Similarly, there are many mistakes and dropped Packages (lost data packets need to be sent again, which makes slower the connection). How, why and why not the device reveals a. Are you the extender but a static IP address so you fix but less of these errors altogether they can not be.

My Conclusion:

An effective device which does not deserve the Cisco logo. But clear Spartan menu interface. Bad signal, disconnections and in my opinion interference in the WLAN. Absolutely illogical approach of the device and the necessary configuration. Lose too often the signal to the router and needs too long to reconnect. All in all: Stay away! I send the device back to Amazon today.
