Curse (Paperback)

Customer Review

I admit straight out: Curse is in my eyes well below gross Magic, the first great part of this series.

Far be it from me to claim that this is not a good book, but it is full of defects whose accumulation eventually generate a small disappointment.
The narrative is again very fragmented between many protagonists. After superbly exposed his world in Magic Brute, I was expecting a work of the author searched a little more about the characters, including Jake Sullivan and Faye. But Larry Correia chose to do roughly the same book as the first: a rapid alternation of supposed viewpoints give rhythm. Outside, there is not much going on for the main characters in the first 250 pages (there is no real main character, the main character is the section of Grimnoir discovery in Volume 1), pages that finally that the scenario of a grand final (or Grand Guignol, it depends). The rhythm is less intense than in the first episode, and suddenly I found the characters too overflown. I was also disappointed by the lack of developments in the nature of magic.
True, the author is careful to link the different parts of the series in excellent overall plot, while developing a specific plot for the intermediate volume. But suddenly it gives the story an almost anecdotal, feeling reinforced by super pretty caricatured villains.
My disappointment also likely is that Magic Brute was so innovative that I was expecting more surprises and novelties in Curse. Without going to say that the author was content to do copy-paste, the surprise factor plays much less, and the book 'm often gave a sense of formatting.

Curse remains great entertainment, the universe is always as successful, coherent and interesting. The action scenes are always disheveled, the pulp alternate history universe is still well seen. The characters even flown, are still as charismatic.
The end of the book is very successful, even if for me it was a little disturbed by reminiscences of Ghostbusters! (I suffer from Bill Murray syndrome, fortunately incurable)

Curse, transition volume too similar to the first part so I was fairly disappointed. I probably expected too much. But I definitely will read the last part of the trilogy, hoping to find more background, more intensity and surprises.
