This compilation is THE must-have for all fans of good music. For Depeche Mode fans it is always mandatory, but for everyone else it is the best way in the fantastic, atmospheric world immerse of Depeche Mode. The phase from 1986 to 1998 shows the band in their most creative time.
The first CD contains the hits from the second half of the 80s. These are just hits it ... logical. Classics like "Enjoy the Silence", "Question of Time" or "Strangelove". But the bombastic "Never let me down again", the monster groovy "World in My Eyes" or the sexy "Stripped" pull rapidly under the spell. The CD shows the band in full synth-work ... and shows how good commercial music can sound, thanks to good instrumentation and great melodies.
The 2nd CD, however, shows the work of the band in the 90's and is not quite as commercially, although hits like "Walking In My Shoes" or "It's no good" are on it. It shows the conversion of the former synth band ... in a crispy alternative rock band. "I feel you", "Barrel of a Gun" and "In Your Room" let's talk guitars. Dave, with a beard and long hair do than drugs fully pumped Rockstar nor the rest of his. So fatal history would end, so versatile you can see the band here. After Dave was clean and Alan has unfortunately left the band and the new beginning with great songs like "Home" or "Only When I loose myself" on the double CD is documented. They show the Depeche Mode despite the problems in the '90s have not lost any of their creativity. The final offers then the madness performance of "Everything counts" live in Passadena anno 1988. But as you get goose bumps ... and the desire to "The Singles 81-85"
All in all, this compilation is all that what Depeche Mode. Musical depth paired with atmosphere and a great look live at photos in videos. All this results in a mysterious, mystical appearance that makes the band so fascinating. "Singles 86-98" is the perfect introduction to this incredible world. Must buy!
