History: I loved Bioshock 1. Even if it had even then its graphical weaknesses, even if the gameplay during the first part was not exactly revolutionary. But there was this story and the setting. Never been to such a courageous and consistent interaction - and that there was previously. I was certainly more than just fascinated by this piece of entertainment software, which ultimately also led that Bioshock 1 was the first game that I've played through in a single PC session and had (so absorbed me the world and story around Rapture). At the end I was really dizzy (of the story) and also did for me, even the buttocks extremely hurt (from sitting) - nevertheless got the first part of five stars from me.

Then the announcement of the 2nd part, then the announcement that there would be the new part in this Special Edition - with record of the soundtrack of Part 1. I was flabbergasted. As if 2K would erhöhrt my subconscious prayers: not least by Garry Schyman's music the game nor the last polish was missed. This is now in style on vinyl - my heart was at 120 beats per minute. The pre-order already sent.

Now I have this special edition for three days with me. Bioshock 2 I have in Single Player and by the multiplayer part, I'm just.

My résumé of the game is very, very ambivalent - probably because I was so such a crush on Bioshock and one am. Well, I want's put it this way: that return to Rapture has a lot of fun to me. The new / old setting, this game in aquarium game, the artistic presentation around the defunct '50s and and and. Everything somehow so familiar and so different-nice. But then from hour to hour more my disillusionment. Of the game principles also is much namely remained the same. Only maybe the fact that you can now use plasmids and weapons parallel, makes the whole experience a little more interesting or liquid in the gameplay. Otherwise, however, listen to my high enthusiasm here: the variety of the different levels reached nowhere near that of the predecessor. Were there's still the crazy Steinberg laboratories rotten docks, the industrially-imposing Hephaestus, the hustle and Fort Frolic - by now just to name a few - so there's the 2nd part felt only two or three different environments. In addition, at the 2nd part of the background music is very subtle (or am I wrong here?) Is used. Far less than in the 1st part - which again represents a step backwards in terms of atmosphere for me.
But what has most disappointed me is the story of Bioshock 2. Clearly, the reviews on the web out there, say that the story is very good still - perhaps even better than in part one - I can these allegations, but (unfortunately) disagree. Part one had namely the advantage that the story gradually built up and culminated in meeting with Andrew Ryan. It was believed that now it was all over, the game swung dramatically but by and it is a revealed that they had seen only the first half of the Opus. Part 2 lacks this dramaturgical center considerably. Everything is much more straightforward (just like the level structure; although a certain amount of freedom allowed - only one is still more limited than in Part 2, Part 1), perhaps for many people even clearer. I want to highlight positive but that the Bioshock 2 has team then but places very hard, the Bioshock world continue imagining. Background information that might get in the first part only a few lines of dialogue spendiert be further explained in the new Bioshock and decorated - really nice. Also you can find some cross-references to the story of the first part - something I also like immensely. Still, I would have liked a lot more courage here. After playing through and the admitting of disappointment around Bioshock 2 me but one thing has become very aware: even though I am now comparatively sober, so I had fun anyway my on game and on the story and is also once again clear to me, how dreary the shooter landscape but for people who value well-told stories is. I can think of at least one no further play that such a scenario as unused unused Stories can replenish. Too bad also.

Before I get to specific Special Edition, a few sad things that have stung me with the PC version of Bioshock 2 still in the eye:

1) There are still numerous bugs. There would be a couple of translation errors in the descriptions of various plasmids. There's the matter with the keyboard layout that can be freely chosen, but is then also sometimes times displayed incorrectly in the game (very silly if you just want to save a Little Sister, but their own key assignment is so unfavorable that they are quite evil sacrifices - bad).
Then even the really negligent bug, when it comes to the viewing angle of widescreen displays. Was that the Field-Of-View or the circumcision of widescreen image already in the predecessor an embarrassing problem, so I was all the more Baffer when here the same happened again. Shame on you 2K. At least one patch has been announced for this.
Otherwise, no major bugs more was noticed by me. The one time or another, the character canted though (and you also can not get more free), but wenigsens's in the game, the Quick Save and Quick Load function. People who so much store, also a lot of frustration to spare.

2.) Games For Windows Live. Beautiful thing. You have to install it. Whether you like it or not. Absolutely necessarily for the multiplayer part. Although the central profile management including Achievements is certainly nice and convenient, but please, please, please Microsoft: warn your clients if the old Scores stop working suddenly after applying a patch. That's what happened to me. After about 5 hours solo adventure (including savegames) I wanted to try the multiplayer part - all well and good. There still rapidly up an update and you're also going on. Unfortunately, after that no more savegames were solo part there. Tristesse and Verarschung pur!

But now to the beautiful things, the Special Edition. I may such restrictions, since I think computer games in hands. I was also one of the blasphemers who the sinking of the "beautiful" anticipated games time ago about 10 years. Back when distance was taken from the big boxes and Games found only in the DVD Cases Place. At that time, I have not yet learned that the publisher with the time would swing back again and would every major game beistellen a Collector's Edition. Oh how beautiful. All the better, if it so is like Bioshock. 2

So. My résumé to this Special Edition:

1) The packaging is awesome. Already alone the box around the big box: choicest pressure in embossing processes. Toll!
2.) The deeper you go, the more shows the splendor of this package: The outer box is black with the hands of developers plan forward. As in the game make this even on the box a butterfly motif - and also here: Embossing Embellished even. Wonderfully complex!
3.) Then the first record. Sure, you could here may be quiet daring the motive or the record can still send more grams, but what is already is nevertheless absolutely outstanding and nicely done. The cover in the style of the 50s panels - the panel labeling himself kept more to 50s. I have now only entmotten my turntable to finally listen this disc of Rapture Records can.
4.) Now the surprise. Does anyone have the announcement video of the Special Edition still in your head? There was less than the record everything more or less arranged in a cardboard holder - in my copy all the items are but embedded in a beautiful, velvety plastic version. Perfect fit naturally. The posters are actually rolled. The artbook fits absolutely beautiful to black velvet.
5.) Yes, this artbook. What can I say. Never, ever before has become more so called earned an artbook a Special Edition, as here. Both in the book binding (here no compromises have been made), as well as in the paper selection was not saved. After tossing one realizes how much ideas, influences and designs stuck in Bioshock 2 (the greater the disillusionment of course, as the final product then "unfortunately" looks) or can be found on the individual pages many small anecdotes of developers to these and those models and their Enwicklungsprozess or biography. Very nice. when you realize how close the details were or how artistic decisions are made in the game development.
6.) Then behind the artbook of the actual game discs (in normal retail packaging) and again beyond the, also been made in beautiful vinyl ajar optics Bioshock 2 soundtrack (which I've got to probably listen again extra; is indeed too little in game even before)
7) Taking all of the velvety packaging out, you can still see the reliefs, which are inserted under the velvet: course in the most beautiful style of the Art Deco period (absolutely great this level of detail - down to the bottom of the package :))

So unter'm line can this special edition not give enough positive judgments - the effort, which is behind here, should be a role model for other AAA titles. Since I am quite also willing to pay 10 to 20 euros more times as a customer.

Before I hergebe my four stars for the game and the Special Edition, I would like to touch briefly two things:

a.) the multiplayer part. Very, very, very neglected the thing (at least on PC). Lags wherever you look (despite 2Mbit line) or lags that can confirm every player. So not an isolated case (though it would interesting to see how the situation there looks on the consoles). In addition, my gameplay in multiplayer is not as likeable as it sounds on paper: gradually you have to earn points namely (eg for frags, successful hacking etc.) so that you get newer and better equipment. Nice if you end up in a match in which you yourself have only the simplest (and least by powerful strike) weapons and already have all players on grenade launcher & Co. So much for balancing.
But what has pleased me well: you see Rapture now finally as it was in its heyday. So who - like me - an eye raises's level design and would like to see sometimes how Rapture looked like before the Civil War: here you have the first and best opportunity. Nicely done, anyway.

b.) the hardware requirements. I prefer to inflame now no conspiracy, but I'm playing Bioshock 2 just above the minimum system requirements (myself have a 6000 X2, a Radeon X1950 256MB, 3GB of RAM, Win XP SP2) and play the game with> all


So. end. Everything said or written. From me there's a result of disappointment in any case only 4 stars - but nevertheless a clear recommendation for friends Rapture.

PS. Even at the end, was already mentioned here: the Special Edition I have had personally come from England of amazon.uk. Priced course another league, but: it is present on this version also German. So if there are people here who wanted this ever wanted to know: Yes! The English version is multilingual!
