Bert Jansch is a singer-songwriter and guitarist unknown Scottish contemporary of Dylan and Donovan, but whose name appears, unlike the latter, be passed to the dustbin of history. It is time to right this wrong, as the quality of the compositions of this first album will leave stunned all lovers of folk-songs introspective that meets or any music lover in general. A minimalist album where, armed only with his acoustic guitar (an instrument he mastered perfectly, so that Jimmy Page and Neil Young - no less - will not hesitate to baptize the "Hendrix of the acoustic guitar") , Jansch delivers ethereal and contemplative songs, in a paradoxical style, both raw, primitive, and yet cleverly stripped refined, offering also some instrumental beautiful, where originality and technicality of his guitar playing fully reflected . The authenticity and simplicity of these pieces are stunning, in the purest tradition of itinerant folk-singers like Woody Guthrie and Hank Williams (very slight influence for the country). One song in particular attract the attention, justifying itself purchasing the disc: the sublime "neddle of Death", dedicated to a friend who died of overdose, one of the most beautiful songs ever written about drugs, one of the beautiful songs ever written any court (a "scandalously beautiful song" says Young, an admirer of the first hour). Note, finally, that fans of Nick Drake imperative discover this composer, who had a considerable influence on their idol.
