The Man Comes Around (Audio CD)

Customer Review

Of course it's hard to rate this album so soon after the death of Cash. By his death the CD has just become even more important and shows the fragility and the pain of cash. It just sounds like an album of a man who is opposed to the death. Sadly, shakily, looking deep.
How to zuvorigen "American" portions mixed cash here again covers with its own. "The Man Comes Around", the opener, proving that cash is also at an advanced age to be able to write Fleet Country Songs. The subsequent "Hurt" is probably one of his greatest songs. And probably the most unusual: Who would have expected that the veteran Johnny Cash covert to a song by Nine Inch Nails? This actually already perfect original is improved here again, instead of anger comes here dread to light.
The rest covers can also be seen: "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is reduced to the bare minimum, as so often in cash, "Personal Jesus", originally by Depeche Mode is remodeled to lilting acoustic piece (!). Only "Bridge Over Troubled Water" sounds a bit too cluttered, here would once again less is more was.
"The Man Comes Around" is a worthy conclusion of Cash's career and should certainly more to tears. But: "We'll meet again / Do not know where, do not know when / But I know we'll meet again some sunny day ...
