Clearers of CPO labels like Naxos or Sterling sometimes exhume programs that interest while listening but do not always deserve to be remembered. However, this CD captivated me, and we submitted a composer of unquestionable authority.
Through this recording of 1974, "Opening Heroic" 1925 already reveals the writing force and sumptuous orchestration which he is capable.
But it is especially ardent post-romantic Symphony No. 4 which marks the mind, with its dark and dramatic first movement, its proud Scherzo (note the Straussian chatoyances at the end of the song), warm and Andante noble (one would think almost Elgar) that the wand Gerhard Pflüger has the good taste to animate unabated. And his impressive final that begins with a representation of stubborn strings, cosmic resonance, evoking resolutely Bruckner.
Perfect interpretation by the orchestra of Berlin Radio, captured in June 1965, and (that the publisher forgets we specify) originally appeared on LP Eterna (rating of 8 20 659). Excellent miking, spacious and dynamic.
These two works are worth visiting and we urge to discover the other symphonies.
No other CD available to my knowledge, but the graceful internet audiovisual resources offer the No. 2 and No. 3 in archive recordings, led by Heinz Pflüger and Rögner.
