Customer Review

Update 05/10/2013: even at full frame makes the lens very well, for me it is the 5D Mark III. Nevertheless, I still put it because of the extra magnification particularly like one on the 7D.

Old review:
After I made my new 100 Macro of Canon, I could use it with the same intensity on a multi-day photo tour. From Falter on the wind slightly swinging flowering to escapees mantis itself offered a lot of hard test situations. I tested the 100 on my EOS 7D and 50D extensively.

On the 50D, the new 100 makes very good. It is simply a superior lens on the optical everything is right - from the crisp sharpness to the harmonious bokeh (background blur). Also, the manual focusing, which is always necessary in times of real macro photography, this lens makes with genuine fun. The newly developed stabilizer working on the 50D to intermediate distances well. For larger approaches to the object (ie, approaching the image scale 1: 1), so true macro photography, it, however, little effect (see footnote).

A whole new world of macro photography reveals itself when one puts the new 100 on the EOS 7D and their intelligent autofocus (AI Focus AF) is activated (see footnote). In the 7D with its 19 AF sensors can almost always put the desired image the focus point to the location where you want to appear sharp. One must therefore work less manually so already. What happens? You now fluctuates in hand-held photography at the object or away - or move the wind the object to the camera or away (with a tripod or bean bag is a problem), then you can hear now, like the AF of the 7D is active. If these wobbles are not too fast, then he manages quite well to keep the sharpness level where you want them. Of course, one must not expect miracles of them, but with the combination of this lens with the 7D I'm doing for the first time experience that you can use this technique seriously in practice. The best way to of each motif in critical situations with shallow depth in faster rate of fire a few photos. Then you have a good chance that one sitting right. However, the AF of the 7D is very sensitive to the fact that you have set on the lens to correct distance range (eg 0.3 m - 0.5 m for closest approach). Anyway, the 7D and the new 100 work together so perfectly that one gets along a lot more often without a tripod or bean bag. Another plus is the high optical resolution of the lens, with which you can really take advantage of the tightly packed 18 megapixel APS on the small sensor of the 7D (with enough light). The wealth of detail is exhilarating.

Plus points:
+ Top optics, already at full aperture very sharp, color fringing (chromatic aberration) and other image defects do not matter
+ Wonderful bokeh thanks to 9-blade aperture, the Canon L lenses donated only
+ High luminous intensity
+ To medium approach efficient stabilization
+ Together with the EOS 7D even real freehand macros (though no wonder!) Possible
+ Very good mechanical operability, focus ring does not translate too steep
+ Quality workmanship and the plastic parts
+ Now protected as L-lens also dust (important for the ground-level use, as is typical for macros)
+ Water resistant with rubber lip on the bayonet
+ Price high but justified.

Bad points:
- Compared to the Werbeversprechung stability is not really useful in real macro distances (if you have a camera with less good AF off)
- Canon lens cap with side handles are not removable if you have screwed the lens hood (I recommend retrofitting with Kaiser Lens Cover "Snap-On", with lens cap fuse ΓΈ 67 mm)
- Tripod collar is not supplied (and Canons retrofit clamp is overpriced)
- Already decent weight, with the 7D you get to roughly 1.5 kg in hand.

Conclusion: In my collection it is definitely one of the lenses with the highest fun factor, it is ideal for experimentation. Can also be great for portrait photography.

Alternative: alternative with other characteristics for cameras with the smaller APS sensors is much more favorable Canon EF-S 60mm / 2.8 / Macro USM lens. It is much cheaper, smaller, lighter, processed properly and also has a super ultrasonic drive with manual full-time engagement. Photographically opens there other macro-regions, as it greater approximations to 9 cm (from the lens end measured) permits (but only if patient objects ...). There has no stability, so often need a stable surface. Compared to the 100 me now is noticeable, however even more strongly that the 60s the focus ring is almost too steep for manual work at shallow depth of field.

Footnote: Why the stability of the 100ers only with the 7D is really good ...
Who photographed much with the new 100, noted in practice that the new stabilization is indeed very good. But just in the real macro situations at close approximation to the object with shallow depth of field can not hold what Canon's advertising promises. This is because the "IS" rotational movements and camera shake the camera in the plane perpendicular to the imaginary line between compensating lens and the subject. Movement toward the object and away from it can not balance, so it works more "two-dimensional". But just this fluctuation of distances makes macro photographers and often -Photographers enough life difficult. Only one camera with a really efficient functioning three-dimensional object tracking can compensate for this weakness partly. The EOS 7D is of the cameras that I know well, the first in practice surprisingly often hinkriegt (but only at a slow scraping depressions).
