An Abundance of Katherines (Paperback)

Content

Colin Singleton is what is known as a child prodigy. From an early age smarter than most of his classmates, it was his life-long desire to be a genius and easy to do something that has a meaning.

Now Colin 17, has just graduated from high school and his last girlfriend Katherine XIX has broken up with him. Colin had in his life 19 relations and all with a girl named Katherine. Where other guys are on blondes, he is now again on Katherine.

But now that K-19 has finished the thing and he is still a genius Colin wonders if his life has any sense and spends a lot of time trying to lie around on the floor and think about the meaninglessness of their existence.

His best friend Hassan has it soon enough and grinds with Colin on a road trip. As you can see in Tennessee a sign that shows them the way to a place called Gutshot where supposedly the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand is buried, they do not hesitate.

Gutshot proves to be a nest of nowhere. But they meet there Lindsey. Lindsey is a girl who until now only had a boyfriend. And whose name was Colin.

Assessment

Ahem JOHN GREEN, damn !!! Actually, all this should be, what I have to write. But for the sake of all those who have not yet recognized the genius of this author, I will try to express myself in some detail.

An Abundance of Katherines (and damn, how much sound the English title better than the German ?!) is a former Greens works. Anders, than other authors, does his incredible ability to tell stories at all no harm. Although it should be noted that Will Grayson, Will Grayson has given me more laughs and The Fault in Our Stars more heartache, but had to Abundance of Katherines a wonderful read!

So it's about Colin Singleton. He likes to create anagrams, trying to read 400 pages a day and speaks good eleven languages fluently. He is also, at least according to Hassan, the egozentrischste person on the planet. All he wants is to be liked and to create something for which you will remember him. Both seem to him simply do not want to succeed, because Hassan is his only friend and all Katherines have made from the one reason or another up with him and not vice versa. And then there's the fact that he still had no eureka moment. This at least he gets in the book very soon, and it starts at a theorem to work, which is to prove that every person either has an inclination to leave his partner or to be left by them.

Hassan is Colin's best friend, a bit thick, and also Muslim. It provides most of the jokes in the book. Unlike Colin, he has no problem with it, the whole day doing nothing and watching Judge Judy on the sofa. The two are quite open with each other and in some ways represents a kind of dramatic irony to Hassan Colin is. At least in common with Lindsey. Because as I said: Hassan had at the beginning of the book never a girlfriend and no problem with it, its time to waste. Lindsey, on the other hand, does not want to be famous; she likes the life in the small town of gutshot. Both are completely contrary to Colin's initial views.

John Green is a wonderful author, I have already said in previous reviews and this opinion I am. He just has a way with words I dont know. I give here simply times an example:

And to Colin's mind, at least, there was a deeper repetition: each time, Katherine dumped him Because They just didnt like him. They each came to the same conclusion about him Precisely. He wasnt cool enough or good-looking enough or as smart as theyd photoshoped in short, he didnt matter enough. And so it happened to him again and again, until it what boring. But monotony doesnt make for painlessness. In the first century CE, Roman Authorities punished St. Apollonia by crushing her teeth one by one with pliers. Colin Often thought about this in relationship to the monotony of dumping: We have thirty-two teeth. After a while, having each tooth Individually destroyed probably gets repetitive, even dull. But it never stops hurting. P.96

Apart from Greens style of writing the book has other peculiarities. It is full of footnotes, Venn diagrams and graphs with X and Y axes. Math is everywhere. One must note here that I am not a big light in math (I've never been and I'll never be), so I can not say whether Colin's theorem makes sense. But after a real mathematician named Daniel Bliss has developed the formula, I think they hinhaut well.

Even the cover is wonderfully managed. It was designed by a fan of the book named Sarah Turbin and is really perfect because it all the little quirks of history shows footnotes on curves over love.
