By Prequal the legendary musical "The Wizard of Oz" is composer and lyricist Stepen Schwartz, who was already famous for his works Godspell, Pippin and Gepetto, finally succeeded in the Broadway hit, the crisis-stricken New York bitter after September 11 had need. Recently Susan Hilferty was for the best costumes, Eugene Lee for the best stage and Idina Menzel for Best Actress (Elphaba) with the coveted Tony Awards honored in three categories in 2004. And that certainly right! Unfortunately, the musical side of the play was at this awards ceremony empty-handed, which is almost incomprehensible after enjoying the CD recording of the original Broadway casts because Stephen Schwartz has delivered a real gem here: a hit after the next, a ballad by the next good mood up-tempo hit can take the handset itself. Not a minute of excellent scores are wasted time on the shiny silver disc produced! And this despite (or perhaps because) some pieces with more than six minutes of playing time to give enough time for interesting developments. Not to mention the fantastic voices of the two leading actresses Idina Menzel (Elphaba) and Kristin Chenoweth (Galinda) who know how to continually inspire the harmonious duets and moving canon with the remaining ensemble. And veteran Joel Gray as a magician shows that he is after a long career (Cabaret) still in good voice. Is encouraging the large orchestra, which was topped up for the CD recording by a few additional musicians, and after the last synth austerity measures in the musical world can ensure a balanced rich sound finally back. It is virtually impossible to mention one of the 19 titles as check out tip, since all pieces can take on a high level, yet still I want to mention that "Popular," "Defying Gravity" and the ballad "I'm Not That Girl" will find a place in every musical heart at the very first hearing! Conclusion: WICKED are equal to 19 successful number 1 hits in a row and charmed from the first to the last minute!
