The EOS 70D has had in my first attempts with different specimens and Canon lenses surprisingly common problems with the normal auto focus, either clearly too often either clearly lay beside or rumzickte. Never reproducible, but always leaving behind a bad feeling. In the test of Ringfoto 09/2014 I found my fears with the 70D unfortunately more than confirmed (40% sharp, 60% out of focus).
But what was that? Only the SIGMA 18-35 F1.8 reached a legendary AF hit rate on the EOS 70D! All images knackscharf without deviation. A Sigma? Without genuine Canon AF know-how? To their new quality mesh pays actually look like? otherwise they were always cucumbers that are not needed note. So go ahead and try.
WHOW, I can only confirm the 18-35 various test results for the SIGMA. The appearance quite classy, the Habtik surprisingly solid, the AF faster and extremely accurately. And the picture quality? For a wide-angle zoom very well. Both calls actually for image errors - popular are blurred corners, CA and nasty distortion. But here very moderate practically at 18mm, 24mm from impeccable. Sharpness and contrast are generally in very good F2-2,8, minimally weaker at 35mm, but still very good level. F1.8 is also very useful and only slightly (but visible) softer. Depending on the composition - what else a F1.8 - however, this is rather of secondary importance.
What a surprisingly good deal. Even on the EOS 70D, the order simply did not want to rumzicken, as usual.
And I say that not just a fan of APS-C and especially the Canon EF-S quality (see Zeiss 135mm). But SIGMA has raised the bar here considerably, the EF-S 17-55 F2.8 IS is as inferior in processing and image quality CLEARLY, would actually be with F2.8, IS and the longer telephoto my first choice as an allrounder for APS-C been. That was once.
If SIGMA continues like Canon have to wrap up warm. As I said at the function During 70D not even work the EF 70-300 L (according to Canon, no kidding) and other EF / EF-S also significantly worse
can the SIGMA 18-35 F1.8 just for the price would recommend.
There is simply no real alternatives to APS-C, what image quality, the zoom range and aperture concerns: not even the more expensive EF 16-35 F2.8 L II, which also has no IS. The EF 16-35 F4 L IS is only F4 and visually worse, as the old EF 17-40 L without IS.
