The grid is top. The rods attach the grille firmly in the lawn so that our guinea pigs can not push up the grid. The door is sufficient in size. The cover is not weatherproof permanently. We have this now for half a year permanently outdoors in use. The eyes have unfortunately somewhat solved but it could be used anyway. The cover is mandatory because otherwise raptors could pick up our little ones.
