Tortured perverse fairy tales

Witcher, Volume 1: The last wish (Paperback)

Customer Review

Excluding Poland, though many are familiar damateurs Fantasy Geralt, the character from The Witcher, this is less through books dAndrzej Sapkowski Quà the series of video games that they have inspired: "The Witcher". It was the same for me. Although disappointed with the mechanisms and messy history of the first game, I have nevertheless attracted universe in which i virtually evolved. So I've learned with joy that Bragelonne editions had published the French translation of lentièreté of the saga.

Volumes 3-7 form an epic followed. However, this first volume, as the second, composed of independent news, which have in common their protagonist: the witcher Geralt. But What is an witcher, exactly? This is a man trained to hunt monsters. He travels the world in search of customers, who are often willing to pay large sums to get rid of Strigias, vampires and other kikimores.

Like almost any work of fantasy, "The Last Wish" draws inspiration from fairy tales. Here, the loans are more obvious still quailleurs. Thus, the Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, or the 1001 Nights, each serve as the foundation for the new moon. It is far from the adaptation lazy. These tales are cut, mixed and tortured in a thousand ways perverse before serving departure point to a plot that overflows. The result is often surprising and always very dark. The world of Witcher inspires indeed despair. Not so much by the misery caused by the monsters monstrosity by ordinary men. For in this universe to find a beautiful soul, a person that is neither greedy nor comploteuse nor intolerant, you have to search long, long time. So fortunately quAndrzej Sapkowski knows how to show with humor, to make it digestible concentrate blackness crossed with inexpiable sins. Black humor, of course, quoiquil slips occasionally a passing reference to other tales yet, which could lead to morbid without afterthought smile.

With this first volume, the Witcher is therefore emerging as a mature series, not in the sense of "sex and violence" but because he addresses the Fantasy by the flap the intrigues and baseness Dame. By revisiting the tales and injecting additional perversity of this series beginning is as a sort of Shrek, Adult Education, with great success to boot. We can blame this edition some lacks of elegance in translation, but the quality of the oeuvre deserves lon dindulgence to show before these minor imperfections. I recommend this book to all lovers of original Fantasy. And if you do not really want to get started in the umpteenth saga Fantasy multivolume, rest assured: this first volume is sufficient in itself. But jai little doubt about the fact that you will still eager to move to the next volume.

Note that the news presented here are connected by an encompassing narrative written especially for their grouping in volume: the "voice of reason". This approach has been frequently adopted by other authors, almost always with a disappointing result: disparate episodes, placed end to end to form a kind of main quest to perfect artificial fragrances. Andrzej Sapkowski for his part showed more finesse: "The voice of reason" is a moment of relative calm in the life of the witcher, the opportunity for him to remember the past episodes that make up the various news, and the reader put the characters in a broader context. Sure, these intermediate thumbnails are not panting, but they allow the desired continuity, much more natural way.
