I bought this because the external burner combo that came with my old Mac Book not engraved DVDs.

Nay. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO. Unpacking, you plug the USB (there are two, but frankly, I think one is enough) and you write or you read the CD / DVD, as if it was your original combo.
All at a price ...!
You can buy eyes closed. In any case if you have an Apple computer. That may be just as easy on a PC, but I have not tried.
