Customer Review

For the desk in my study I was looking for a corded telephone. By chance I came across the Emporia T12, which has pleased me in shape. After thoroughly studying the manual, which I have previously downloaded from the Internet to me, I decided to buy the phone.

The phone is available in 2 versions: one without answering machine (T12) and an answer machine (T12 AB). Although I really do not need a voice mail, I opted for the version with voicemail (T12 AB). Only in this version can be namely plain text names in the phonebook Enter (max. 15 characters are possible). For incoming calls, the plain-text name appears in the display, provided the caller is found in the phone book. This function was important to me. In the version without answering machine, you can enter only numbers and even numbers will be consequently displayed on incoming calls. I think that's less convenient.

The T12 AB is powered by a plug-in power supply. In contrast, the T12 requires batteries that must be replaced regularly. For the T12 AB must be installed near a power outlet while you are free in the choice of location for a phone with battery power. In addition, the battery supply offers the advantage that even in case of power failure the full functionality of the phone is available at least until the batteries are empty. That was me but anything less important, it seemed to me more important not to constantly change the batteries.

There are other differences between T12 and T12 AB. For example, has the T12 instead of the answering machine with an integrated "pocket" calculator and an alarm function. These functions are missing in T12 AB. I not also miss.

After the phone after a (DHL-inflicted) small odyssey was finally arrived at me, I immediately took the package contents under the magnifying glass. The delivery of the T12 AB include:

- The phone
- The separately packed handset
- A mounting foot, with which the phone slightly tilted forward up to be
- A power supply for 9V / 300mA (equivalent to 2.7 watts)
- A spiral handset cord (unfortunately relatively short)
- A TAE connection cable for connection to a telephone jack or a PABX
- An instruction manual (unfortunately with some errors)

The casing of the phone and the handset and all operating elements are made of plastic, but by no means does a substandard impression. There nothing wobbles, the handset is comfortable to hold and has a pleasant weight (not too light, not too heavy). The design with the aluminum-colored, curved edging around the casing like. The large display has a noble-looking, blue lighting. These lights only while using the phone, at rest it is dark. The display is easy to read but also unlit due to the large font and the slight tilt forward. In idle mode it displays time and date and the number of missed calls and the number of calls recorded by the answering machine. For incoming calls, the caller's number and, if the stored in the phonebook cleartext name. Furthermore, the display is of course to display your messages when you are selecting the menu. The keys must be pressed with some force, but you get used to quickly.

After assembly of the phone (handset connect via spiral cable, Telefonfuß on the phone clipped-bottom) I closed it at first to the telephone line. Here it turned out that one can already make calls without AC adapter. In case of power failure for sure useful. However, the display remains dark without electricity. Also, the answering machine will not work. The handset cord is unfortunately quite short, so that the phone even at a short distance (much less than 1 m) is pulled behind the listener. In my case, but that was not so bad because I had a longer handset cord stock. But that might be the case only a few buyers, so I take that as a short cable downside.

If you connect the phone in addition to the power supply, it starts initial operation and then report in a loud, easily understandable voice "Answering machine switched on". Anyone (like me) do not need the voice mail, can turn it off by pressing a button. This will also be acknowledged by a corresponding announcement.

Some sample calls revealed that the quality of the handset is neat. The interlocutors understand each other well. Unfortunately, the handset volume can not be changed, possibly for users with less good hearing disadvantage. For me, the earpiece volume is absolutely sufficient.

The phone also allows the on-hook dialing. One can first dial the number (and correct if necessary) and then lift the handset, after which the phone automatically dials the number you entered. I think that's practical, because it allows one-handed operation. Instead of the handset you can also use the built-in speakers by pressing one button. This function was important to me. Unlike the earpiece volume, the volume of the loudspeaker can be changed in 3 levels. This is done via a small switch on the phone back.

For incoming calls, reveals a peculiarity of the phone: the phone even when the answering machine after 9 ringing answers the call and the caller gets the message "Please call again later" heard. This feature can not be switched off! So you should have lifted to 9 ringing, otherwise the phone will answer the call, so the caller u. U. can cost. Although one has to 9 ringing normally sufficient time to answer the phone, but sometimes you manage to just not as fast. The phone a then patronized, brings him the second minus point.

The third drawback also relates to incoming calls. The ring tone (an electronic "lülülülü") can not be changed. One can only vary over a small switch on the back of the phone volume in 3 levels. At least the manufacturer has programmed not too annoying ringtone. Maybe he does not yet meet everyone's taste, therefore the point deduction for missing ringtone choice.

We come to the configuration of the phone. Since it has a variety of convenient features, the configuration menu is correspondingly extensive. The manufacturer has made efforts to keep the most important settings easy to understand, but at least in the beginning to get in some places not without looking at the manual. To make matters worse, that the manual contains errors. Thus, whole passages refer such. As the Installation Instructions on cordless phones (for the T12 AB not apply it, because that's a corded telephone) and 2 buttons to key functions are reversed. In some places in the text missing individual words and symbols, which should primarily at novice users lead to comprehension problems. Nevertheless, the establishment of the phone designed not least reasonably comfortable thanks to the large display and legibly labeled buttons. In some places you could simplify operation yet. So z. B. to be entered "bigger / smaller" keys Date, Time and other numeric values on two. It is incomprehensible to me why the manufacturer has provided here no direct input using the numeric keypad.

So my report not beyond the scope, I will again summarize here all the pros and cons of the phone briefly. First the good points:

+ Pleasing, modern design
+ Large, easy to read display with backlight
+ Good workmanship and stable stand
+ Large keys with a clearly legible label
+ Ergonomic handset with good voice quality
+ Included pedestal brings the phone in a comfortable position
+ Digital answering machine with max. 42 minutes recording time
+ On-hook dialing
+ Handsfree
+ Phone book with up to 120 entries and clear text names
+ Caller list of up to 99 entries
+ Speed dial memory for 10 numbers
Suitable + short codes also for the control of connection-service features
+ List of recently dialed numbers with up to 50 entries
+ Digital answering machine with good recording quality
+ Additional comfort functions
+ Suitable for extensions
+ Available with limited functionality during power failure
+ Relatively low price

But where there is light, is also (somewhat) shadow:

- Ring tone can not be changed
- Handset volume can not be changed
- Too short Handset cable
- Phone takes even when the answering machine calls
- Partially somewhat cumbersome, little intuitive configuration
- Faulty manual

My conclusion: for the (few) negative points I draw from a star, but hold the phone for otherwise recommended. Behind the competition in its price range, it must in any case not hide.

Just a note at the end: the manufacturer Emporia is actually a specialist for seniors phones. Some features of your phone (eg. As the large display and large buttons) make it suitable for this target group, other (z. B. the non-adjustable earpiece volume and the places somewhat complicated configuration) but less. For the phone complies with its excellent facilities and the "youthful" design also claims younger users. Whether the phone is suitable for the intended purpose, so as is often a matter of personal preference. I hope my review will help some in their purchasing decision.
