Previous reviews on this book surprised me. I have a master of medieval history, so I know me a bit even though I forked for 2 years to the right. I read the book closely and I am astonished that a professor from the prestigious Sorbonne can make as many mistakes and write so badly. Examples of errors (there is in many others): - Page 16 it is said that King Raoul was the brother of King Robert I. In fact, it was his son-because he had married his daughter Emma. - Page 65, it says that the lawyer Placentin was a pupil of the Bolognese jurist Irnerius. Impossible, because Placentin was born too late for that. He was probably a pupil of a pupil of Irnerius (Martinus Gosia). - Page 109, we read: "It may be that the Waldensian movement was born in the Languedoc Christianity." In fact, it is well known that the Vaudois were first the "Poor of Lyon" or "poor of Christ" disciples of a Lyons merchant named Valdes. It was later, in the late 12th century, they become numerous in the Midi Languedoc. - Page 110, writes that Mrs. Gauvard heretical movements "receive political support, particularly that of Count Raymond VI" (the Count of Toulouse). This is false; we know that Raymond V Raymond VI and VII Raymond have done everything possible to clear himself of accusations papal promoting the fight against heresy on their land. - Page 110 also probably the most huge mistake, "Dominique implements the courts of the Inquisition." This is completely untrue! St. Dominic fought heresy by preaching. He died in 1221, the Inquisition was established by the papacy in 1232 to 1233 ... Furthermore, Ms. Gauvard seems to have written this book to hurry without being read or reread. Some examples of bizarre phrases, badly written or strange reasoning: - P. 5: "There is then [] to the creation of villages and especially of new villages." - P. 12: "Labbé Abbo of Fleury [] says for instance that some fear the end of time, but that he, ny not believe at all No lan mil terror, so.." - P. 13: "In this revolution lan millet, we [sic] also spoke due to the proliferation of castles". - P. 39: "On the inside the kingdom, these clerics are responsible for defending peace, and outside, to fight against the infidels from where the call [to the crusade] Clermont in 1095". These are not clerics who fight against the infidels! They do not have the right to bear arms ... - P. 48: "Jerusalem was conquered in 1099, thereby sounding the birth and early Latin states." - P. 82: "Louis VII married since 1137 dAquitaine Eleanor, daughter of the last Duke dAquitaine, William X. She brings her radiation jusquaux Pyrenees with fiefs that depend on it." (Depend what these fiefdoms? ...). - P. 89: "that day are held the first royal funeral with ritual, organized as a show, leading the mortal remains of the sovereign until Saint-Denis The phenomenon is interesting because it means that the king died in his body. but that the succession will be assured. " - P. 97: "Richard goes by Cyprus that it submits and imposes his booty." - P. 102: "Philippe Auguste does not merely of a blockade, but chose the offensive, to which the heavy Romanesque castle, became too immobile, unable to answer." - Page 164: "Saint-Denis, lighthouse monastery kingdom is breast royal bosom." !!!!! How Presses Universitaires de France, serious house, could they pass up this book totally botched? ... In any case, it is strongly inadvisable to students, I think, under penalty of surprises on the day of the examination.
