Customer Review

I have this device for two weeks in operation.
Replaces it with me a Benq MW523 with which I was very pleased.
Since the HD131Xe is currently very favorable, I just wanted to see the difference from HD to Full HD.

The application is intended purely for me as replacement TV in the bedroom.

In short, the projector is for the price of around 620 highly recommended and well above average! Professional needs (Tagged Image quality) are not served by the HD131Xe.

Here is a comparison of the positive and negative characteristics of the Optoma HD131Xe:
For details simply by enumerating more!

+ 3 adjustable feet, thus very well suited for lifting the projector rear.
+ 2 HDMI inputs
+ 3D 144Hz
+ Well and quiet / next noiseless ventilation system
+ As soon as ghosting in fast motion (football)
+ Extremely many adjustment for home theater.
+ Almost straight image edges
+ Currently cheapest Full HD home theater projector
+ Up to 6000 lamp hours possible remains to be seen
+ Low power consumption with only 225W
+ Power supply and dimming the lamp almost silently
+ Supposedly dustproof encapsulation of the optical unit is showing the time
+ Lamp with 120 relatively cheap
+ Remote control with illumination
+ No stray light
+ High dynamic and real (ANSI) contrast
+ Excellent shading representation
+ As soon as sharpness adjustment in the warm / cold
+ Sluggish lens with almost no image shift when pressing
+ Possibility to realize 3D RF (radio)
+ Possibility the aufzuspielen HD25e software to extract something better 2D brightness (I recommend here but expressly not!)

o sufficiently bright image in 2D / 3D with reasonably useful presets
o black level for the price range typically pass / fail
o menu well thought out, from BenQ and Acer but easier to use
o Only 2500 lumens despite RGBCYW color wheel, other manufacturers get more out of the 190W UHP lamp out
o no RGBRGB color wheel, some people think that this is only suitable for home theater
o Chromatic aberration (color fringing) in accordance with the Price
o Focus on the price category according to the price
o wheel audible but not loud
o lamp flickers sometimes when changing some settings or image options

- Zoom only 1.2: 1, the competition has usually longer (1.3: 1)
- Remote extremely cheap feel
- No Extreme Eco Mode as the MW523 available
- Not supplied lens cover
- HDMI without MHL Support
Replaceable lamp not own flap -
- High outlet temperature of the cooling air (60 degrees +)

Please note that I can only speak for my Beamer here. I was lucky to get a pretty good device with regard to the series dispersion. Therefore, it may be that others maybe my positive evaluation can not understand and the projector is rated worse. Therefore, you should get a worse device, not surrender and exchange, it is worth!

End of the short review!

Here are the details for all who are looking for more information / impressions about the device:

The packaging is simple, unfortunately without handle. The projector is kept very well padded (air slide) in the outer packaging. The remote control is with blue lighting and is very easy / cheap.

The projector even has the rear ports, which will be convenient for most people and 2 HDMI ports. This projector has two adjustable feet on! Pages front and back. The otherwise have virtually no other projector. For people without ceiling bracket to align perfectly safe. The lens is pretty stiff and does not wobble. From alone be adjusted because nix.

The picture quality is to use preset halfway. Readjustment is but for true HC Feeling duty. The brightness and contrast are excellent and better than the other devices tested by me (Optoma H100, ACER X1340WH, Benq MW663, MW523 Benq, Acer 5380BD and Benq W750).

It is not possible to provide the whole picture perfectly sharp, but the projector is good in this respect!
However, this problem have all projectors in this price range and is due to the relatively inexpensive optics. After a short adjustment work but I did it manage to derogations to max. 1 pixel adjust. I assume that everyone HD131Xe will have this problem varies depending on the series dispersion. 1 pixel offset to the worst point, however, is perfectly normal and had all the devices I tested.

Scattered light is not / hardly available. Furthermore, the image edges are all nearly straight (max. 1cm deviation to 2 meters).
Chromatic aberration (color fringing, ghosting, max 1 mirror offset to the bad steady point) is as mentioned above exist, but as part and no longer falls on from a distance.
On the whole, the optics are so designate in accordance with the solid and the price range. Something better you get near the price not, unless you have extremely lucky a "very good" model with respect to catch scattering.

I have test images uploaded projector image where you can see the quality after a first calibration. On the whole, the image of HD131Xe is very good! The test images have been taken up in 1 eco mode and with "Brilliant Color". I hope the quality is sufficient, it is unfortunately very difficult to accommodate the projected images properly.

Because maybe someone here reads, which is also among the Optoma HD131Xe and the ViewSonic PJD7820HD varies, I uploaded Side-by-side images between two calibrated projectors as a decision aid.
The Optoma has a slightly knalligeres image, but what lies on the not fully disconnectable "Brilliant Color" function. The "Brilliant Color" function has the Optoma several gradations and the Viewsonic just in and out. This is a clear advantage of HD131Xe, because you can choose a mediocrity. When ViewSonic with activated "Brilliant Color" feature, the colors drift sharply from the green-yellow range and require a complete recalibration. This I have not done since my image so much is too bright and 2m width even hidden.
Basically, I would but watch both projectors to be equivalent in terms of calibration capability.

The distance from the screen has the HD131Xe between 300cm and 360cm amount, so is very inflexible. This refers to the most commonly used screen width of 200cm. The projection rate is between 1.50-180: 1, depending on the zoom. It is also important that no longer changes the sharpness in operation!
If you set them in cold projector, the image projector in the warm state is not blurred.
Many others I tested Beamer had to be readjusted in the warm condition!

To adjust the focus there is a test image at HD131Xe. Here you can adjust the sharpness well to achieve a very good sharpness across the entire image. 100% clean but you do not get out the image. The typical DLP color fringes in different forms and colors you always, depending on the series dispersion and quality of the optics. Up to about 1 pixel width you have to accept (is not Reklamationsgtund the manufacturer!). Otherwise, however, would have the more expensive lenses not have permission.
I was a bit shocked by this fringing on my first DLP and wanted to lodge a complaint. However, since all devices tested this phenomenon had more or less, you must accept that. The LCD Group has in some cases even more, because not 100% accurate tuning of the 3 LCD panels contours-ghosting caused.

However, one must also mention that optical errors in Full-HD to be much easier than at 720p devices! This is simply due to the smaller mirrors that conceal the error bit. Optical errors which are produced by the lens / convergence, are on the mirrors, whether HD or Full HD, always equally strong. Therefore, the convergence errors on a smaller mirror as with Full HD not as flashy as on a slightly larger mirror with HD-ready, although the quality of the lenses is equal.
Thus it can be said that HD-Ready devices need a better lens so that the subjective image quality is as good as Full HD. Thus, you have a slightly better chance to obtain a good image at full HD devices.

The brightness is Optoma of 2,500 ANSI lumens, contrast with 18000:. 1 In my opinion, but the unit is identical to the HD25e. The various types of information are probably only come about through a marketing or other software. Anyway, the rich 2500 lumens in daylight not to get a good picture. Although you can see everything, but the colors are pale and without contours. But this is not really better even with 3200 ANSI lumens.
In light angedunkelten space the image is very good and perfect in very dark conditions. Even the eco mode is sufficient slack off at 2 m width. Compared with another device under test with 2,500 lumens (Benq W750) seems to me the brightness to be somewhat weaker. The contrast and the shades are represented but very nice. Only the black value could be better.
The W750 had a minimal darker black. A problem is not, however. Anyone looking for a really good black level, will not be able to find in this price range. The black levels are in this price range ever "ok" to be regarded as.
One can this but with a gray screen greatly improve if you can do without some brightness.
The HD131Xe has enough resources in this respect.

The volume of the Optoma is pleasantly quiet and very quiet even in dynamic mode. In Eco mode in any way more disturbing.
The Benq MW663, the Acer X1340WH, Acer 5380BD and the Benq W750 in my opinion are definitely louder. Only the MW523 and the H100 are comparable silent or minimally louder.
The decibel information (DB) are apparently less meaningful than the actual volume level in the dynamic mode, which is probably the most used. On 100% Lamp power all the devices are simply useless, unless you have a party.
The Optoma has installed two internal fans, but they are so thoughtfully placed to ventilate the whole Beamer well. The fans generate just one air noise, no hum or high frequency hum. The outlet temperature is, however, very warm / hot (around 60 degrees).

The menu is typical Optoma-built and in addition to the pure presentation projectors contains settings for Gamma and Dynamic Black. So you require for a home theater.
The configuration options are extremely extensive and allow adjustments in all possible areas. This is and has always been a strength of Optoma projectors.

The 3D capability is very good and slightly better than 720p devices. Both the effect of depth, brightness, and the pop-outs are well. Flicker and ghosting there practically not at all. When Optoma lamp brightness can be adjusted in 3D mode with some other equipment that does not work, unfortunately. The triple flash 144Hz with only runs with native imagery, which is played at 24 fps. So either Blue-Ray with 1080 24p or via PC with the same settings. The projector then converts the pictures on 2x72Hz, ie 72fps per eye. This is absolutely flicker-free. In Sky 3D goes however not as Sky transmits in 1080i 50Hz. The glasses shutters then only in 100Hz and then you see the flicker significantly. 50Hz per eye are not flicker. 2D to 3D conversion, the device supports, but is actually useless.
This pseudo-3D is anyway not really good. Incidentally, the Eco Mode is easily sufficient. The RF function I could not test for lack of HW.

The rainbow effect is very different in my opinion. I've been easily susceptible and see the effect very quickly, even though it bothers me only conditionally.
The HD131Xe is what concerns the rainbow effect is very good, I can see the effect rarely although I am prone. Most projectors have either one or RGBCWY RGBCYW color wheel. Only the Optoma H100 RGBCWM color wheel. Whether here the arrangement of colors play a role on the color wheel, I can not say. The speed of the color wheel is 3 times for all devices. Some projector (Benq W1070) use a RGBRGB wheel, which results in a lower lumen output result, but minimized the rainbow effect. About the usefulness of RGBRGB or RGBCYW color wheels there are lively discussions in the appropriate forums. Since I did not have a projector with RGBRGB color wheel, I can help no personal experience.

One more thing on the subject of motion blur or ghosting:
Some devices fast movements cause silhouettes or be image content for brevity time blurred.
This effect was by far the most Optoma H100, for an advertised on the homepage Optoma home theater projector, sad.
The Benq MW663 and MW523 are of slightly better, as the X1340WH.
When HD131Xe, Acer 5380BD and the Benq W750 This effect occurs rarely.
Menu items change in this picture, however, almost nothing behavior, no matter what the device.

It is further noted that the Benq MW663, MW523 and the Benq Acer built X1340WH actually for presentations and lacking other menu options for the home theater. Gamma and dynamic black level are completely absent in these devices. Similarly, the adjustment of individual colors is not as extensive.
The W750, HD131Xe and the Optoma H100 offer this abundant options that Optoma even by far the most configuration options. The Acer 5380BD could have more choices, but they range in the normal case pending for HC.

In summary, one can say that the Optoma HD131Xe apart in this price region from ViewSonic PJD7820HD unbeaten and except for a few little things currently is one of the best full HD projector for its price.
Only the PJD7820HD is still cheaper to get bundled with a DVD and a 3D glasses.
Thus, the Optoma currently shares first place with the ViewSonic.
The imperfect optics corresponds to the price and will not be better in the competition. The appearance is now time cheap goods, otherwise the price would not be feasible. The optics roulette you with any manufacturers!
The projector has 2 years warranty and 5 years in addition to the DLP chip and the color wheel (color fastness). This has otherwise only Acer. All other manufacturers have only a general warranty on the entire unit.

The HD131Xe uses a 190W UHP lamp and consumes about 225W on average. A replacement bulb costs about 120, which is relatively low. The service life is also up to 6000 hours in order. Longer stops the lamp Benq MW523 with up to 10,000 hours.
The prices of projector lamps vary greatly from the type of lamp used. Lamps with 190W are usually very low. Lamps with 210W + are usually much more expensive.
Therefore, it does make sense to look at the types of lamps used in the upcoming issue projector exactly.
It is not possible to close only by the lamp used to their life or the beamer brightness. There are projectors that deliver 3000 lumens with a 190W lamp (MW523) and projector, which with a 210W lamp only 2500 lumens afford (W750).
One should also keep the power consumption in mind. A projector with a 190W UHP lamp usually consumes less than a projector with 210W +. Add to this that Beamer are usually quieter and cooler with a 190W lamp.
Why (lamp power / lumen output) are such differences here probably know only the manufacturer .....

The difference from 720p to 1080p can be seen for me already, even if the individual pixels can not really identify with 2m picture width even at 720p. The main advantage is the much weaker form of the optical errors by the optical system for me. This point is more important for me than the higher resolution itself. Since I've had luck with the Optoma HD131Xe and the appearance is OK, unfortunately I have no comparison to other full HD projectors, that I will keep the Optoma. Therefore, I can only make the comparison with the other tested 720p or 1280x800 projectors, and since the difference is already visible in movies, but not earth-shattering. The 200 more compared to an HD-ready device, it is worth to me, however, even if you will be the biggest difference is not in movies, but probably at presentations notice.

I hope this review helps others something in their purchasing decision.
From my unit gets 4 price / performance star.
For 5 star but are a few things that would have Optoma can do better:

- A Zoom with 1.3: 1
Bring out a bit more brightness of the 190W lamp -
- A slightly better black level (the one wishes beamers but almost always ...)
- A far higher quality remote control
- A lens cover
- Maintenance cover to the lamp

The ViewSonic PJD7820HD I will also test soon. But as these two projectors are in the same price range, I would make the decision to hand the intended distance to the screen and the desired image width dependent. The Optoma offers a 2m picture width between 300cm and 360cm, the PJD7820HD provides a 2m picture width between 230cm and 300cm. These are already completely different optics and can be crucial if you do not want to hang on the ceiling the projector.

Update: I've now also tested the ViewSonic PJD7820HD and am undecided which of the two devices will I keep. The ViewSonic has a light grenade, the optics on the same level as for the Optoma. The ViewSonic is significantly louder. The calibration capability of ViewSonic is as good as the Optoma. The menu, however, is far less extensive and more appropriate to the presentation. Furthermore, the ViewSonic has no rear adjustable feet!

So I have now spoiled for choice.

Optoma HD131Xe:

+ Very good shadow detail
+ Less noise
+ Better menu
+ More connections
+ Adjustable legs
Not tested + 3D RF, but
+ Low power consumption

o equivalent image for ViewSonic (color fastness) by calibrating
o 3D DLP Link ViewSonic much better

- Less lumens
- Slightly lower black level
- Larger housing
- 2 years guarantee without onsite service
- No maintenance cover to the lamp
- Only 1.2 times zoom
- Illuminated remote but extremely cheap

ViewSonic PJD7820HD:

+ Extreme brightness (image visible much brighter than when HD131Xe)
+ 8000h (currently the cheapest Full HD projector with such a long lamp life)
+ Very compact housing
+ Very good black level
+ Shadow detail like the Optoma
+ Best 3D DLP-Link which I saw so far
+ 3 years warranty including on-site service!
+ Service door to the lamp
+ 1.3 x zoom
+ The remote control affects quality

o image after calibration equivalent to HD131Xe

- Noise only in Eco mode bearable (Dynamic is unpleasant, because the fan is constantly changing the speed)
- Menu is not as extensive as the Optoma
- Neither of the two rear feet can be adjusted!
- No 3D RF
- Power consumption slightly higher

If you look at the comparison so, both projectors keep such balance. But the 3-year on-site warranty and the enormous brightness and the extremely low price bundled with DVD and 3D glasses are the ViewSonic but very charming. Therefore, I can only say, everyone has to decide what he prefers projector itself. Both have advantages and disadvantages in each case. Personally, I would slightly prefer the Optoma HD131Xe for the home theater, the ViewSonic PJD7820HD for presentations. The criticized in a test light distribution of PJD7820HD of almost 60% I can not find. I can see no difference in this respect to HD131Xe. At the edge are both minimal darker than right in the middle.

I myself chose the ViewSonic PJD7820HD. The Optoma makes the better picture in terms of home cinema, but ViewSonic has convinced me because of the really impressive brightness. Since I take the small disadvantages (only 1 HDMI, louder, slight motion blur, less adjustment) gladly accept. Brightness You can never have enough, because the projector lamp quickly lose luminosity anyway. And so much worse the image of PJD7820HD is not! If one has no comparison to another projector, you can tell the difference not guaranteed. Furthermore, the distance from the screen with 310cm is better for the ViewSonic suitable because I almost did not have to operate the zoom with me. Unfortunately, a used Zoom always leads to an increase of the chromatic aberration and hence to an often not imperceptible loss of quality of the image.
