In Detail:
The camera weighs about 295 g (with battery + memory card) and fit due to their size and their weight in almost every handbag, itself still in the pocket. I have taken them without difficulty even at 2 concerts and sporting events. There may be significantly smaller and lighter models for the opportunities, but the very good zoom range and the pivoting monitor I find fantastic. Especially the Vari-angle LCD monitor is quite useful if you stand further back or smaller. With 3-inch (7.5 cm) it is sufficiently large and has a very good resolution. However, no touch screen; would be a nice complement, I do not miss the daily use but rather. An electronic viewfinder is not present; when shooting in bright sunlight, but help turning the monitor and the 6-step brightness control.
For a safe stop is the black rubberised grip area on the side of the camera very convenient (front wide, back enough for the thumb), even great men hands should cope with it. Visually, it interferes however in my view a bit the overall impression of silver model (but is a matter of taste).
A plus of the Nikon Coolpix S9900 is the easy handling, even beginners will have no trouble making good photographs quickly. In the automatic program you can take snapshots thanks to the fast autofocus, and animal pictures turn out well. The various creative programs are diverse, probably unnecessary for the professional, but allow nice effects without having to edit the recordings on your computer by some software programs. I've made in Scene Program (Scene Auto Selector) with the effects pop, Selective Color or Monochrome very nice shots of a Easter fire in northern Germany, a really nice gimmick. Well applicable for portraits, if you like it also in Sepia (nostalgia effect). If the Scene auto selector is selected, the camera automatically detects the optimal program (eg Portrait, Night Scene, Backlit) and makes the appropriate settings for the recording. Manual controls (aperture, shutter-priority, manual) for the amateur photographers are also available.
To take advantage of the many scene modes and effects accordingly, it is advisable to download the manual. The included Quick Start Guide is sufficient only for the first steps. Comprehensive manuals on paper, there are now no longer just for cameras with extensive functions, I always feel the spontaneous Browse as very helpful.
The Nikon Coolpix S9900 makes mostly good to very good shots, image quality but is still room for improvement. Shots with good lighting conditions succeed perfectly, they are rich in contrast, still quite sharp even at the telephoto end. My photographs of the Easter fire is sharp, you can see almost the crackling of the fire. Close-ups, especially in good light, are very detailed. I have photographed orchid flowers, the structure comes out wonderfully, even the colors are true to nature. Indoor shots, especially in low light appear slightly washed out. If you switch to very high-intensity flash (manually with switches) that can easily illuminate a large room (flash range 6m), the image appears quickly a little too bright. Switching to the manual programs brought often in my experiments better results.
Overall, one can notice significant noise from ISO 800. The recordings are losing sharpness, there are less visible details. Photos are saved in JPEG format, RAW format is not possible.
Practically I find the quick connection to a smartphone or tablet (also coupling via NFC), with the appropriate app (Nikon WMU), the selected recordings via Wi-Fi quickly and easily transmitted, stored directly in the photo gallery. But be careful: The camera goes to transmit the pictures to complete and comes out the lens, even if you have the images previously only in playback mode (the camera is off) selected; ie it should not be too close to the edge of the table, as they easily moves when opening. Otherwise you can use the app as a remote shutter release; Zooming and trigger (also self-timer mode) are possible, further adjustments can not be made.
Positive at the 1st start-up: The battery is half charged and the camera has an internal memory of about 473 MB, enough for a lot of test shots.
