Customer Review

Updated on 31.07.2014:

I have the equipment now in use a few months and am still enthusiastic about the device. The projector now has 500 lamp hours and shows no signs of fatigue.

The unit has been suspended once only once in that time, but not in operation, but the projector did not turn on. After plugging in and out but all went back. This occurred only once.

The fan and the color wheel are still without bearing noise.

Furthermore, my unit now has a perfect picture. The blurring of the upper right corner is completely gone, as are the minimum chromatic aberration. Now the whole picture is completely error free and I am happy about an image, which is normally only accessible with much more expensive instruments.

I can not say why the picture is better now, but for me the projector, making it perfect for presentations.

The often criticized volume is indeed not really be described as low, but the projector is in my 40cm behind my head and I can live with it. Likewise, my wife ...

But the heat also has to be dissipated. Prefer something more volume as a reduced service life of the components.

-------------------------------------------------- ---------------

I tested this unit for 3 days.
I ordered the unit to compare the Optoma HD131Xe.
Since the ViewSonic PJD7820HD is extremely low now bundled, I have dared to attempt, although I am very pleased with the Optoma!

The insert is provided with me for presentations.

In short, the projector is highly recommended and well above average (especially due to the extreme light output) for the price of around 610 in the bundle! Professional needs (Tagged Image quality) are not served with the PJD7820HD, as well as the HD131Xe but.

Here is a comparison of the positive and negative characteristics of ViewSonic PJD7820HD:
For details simply by enumerating more!

o lamp flickers sometimes when changing some settings or image options
o power consumption is acceptable with only 265W

- Not a single adjustable rear foot.
- Only 1 HDMI input
- Loud ventilation system (in dynamic mode sometimes very annoying!)
- No Extreme Eco Mode as the MW523 available
- Not supplied lens cover
- HDMI without MHL Support
- High outlet temperature of the cooling air (65Grad +)

Please note that I can only speak for my Beamer here. Due to the large series dispersion in this price range, it may be that you get delivered a better or worse copy!

End of the short review!

Here are the details for all who are looking for more information / impressions about the device:

The packaging is simple, unfortunately without handle. The projector has sufficiently cushioned (molded foam) kept in the outer package. The remote control is no lighting and is very high quality. The DVD in a bundle is laterally inserted into the package. The 3D glasses is located at the outer edge of the carton and can be damaged during transport over slightly. I was lucky and the glasses were healing. Here you would be more concerned about the safe stowage of the glasses to make.

The projector even has the rear ports, which will be convenient for most people and only 1 HDMI connector. This projector has NOT adjustable feet on both sides of the back. This is my first video projector, which not even 1 adjustable foot has. That's actually a joke and completely incomprehensible, even for a projector, which is advertised for mobile presentations!
The lens, however, is nicely stiff and does not wobble. From alone be adjusted because nix.

The picture quality is to use preset halfway. Readjustment is but for true HC Feeling duty. The brightness is a madness, the contrast as good as the Optoma HD131Xe and better than the other devices tested by me (Optoma H100, ACER X1340WH, Benq MW663, MW523 Benq, Acer 5380BD and Benq W750).

It is not possible to provide the whole picture perfectly sharp, unfortunately for me a corner to get not very sharp and has chromatic aberration.

This problem has in this form but all projectors in this price range and is due to the relatively inexpensive optics. After a short adjustment work but I did it manage to the discrepancies, apart from the one corner, at max. 1 pixel adjust. I assume that everyone ViewSonic will have this problem varies depending on the series dispersion. 1 pixel offset to the worst point, however, is perfectly normal and had all the devices I tested.

Scattered light is easily available. Furthermore, the image edges are all nearly straight (max. 1cm deviation to 2 meters).
Chromatic aberration (color fringing, ghosting, max. 1 mirror offset to the bad steady point) is as mentioned above exist, but as part and no longer falls on from a distance.
On the whole, the optics must therefore be described as solid and the price range accordingly as above average. Something better you get near the price not, unless you have an extremely good luck with regard to catch "even better" model diversification.

I have test images uploaded projector image where you can see the quality after a first calibration. On the whole, the image of PJD7820HD is very good! The test photos were taken in Eco mode and without the "Brilliant Color" function. I hope the quality is sufficient, it is unfortunately very difficult to accommodate the projected images properly.

Because maybe someone here reads, which is also among the Optoma HD131Xe and the ViewSonic PJD7820HD varies, I uploaded Side-by-side images between two calibrated projectors as a decision aid.
The Optoma has a slightly knalligeres image, but what lies on the not fully disconnectable "Brilliant Color" function. The "Brilliant Color" function has the Optoma several gradations and the Viewsonic just in and out. This is a clear advantage of HD131Xe, because you can choose a mediocrity. When ViewSonic with activated "Brilliant Color" feature, the colors drift sharply from the green-yellow range and require a complete recalibration. This I have not done since my image so much is too bright and even slightly hidden in 2m width.
Basically, I would but watch both projectors to be equivalent in terms of calibration capability.

The distance from the screen should be at 230cm and 300cm PJD7820HD between, so is very inflexible. This refers to the most commonly used screen width of 200cm. The projection rate is between 1:15 to 1:50: 1, depending on the zoom. It is also important that the sharpness in operation barely changed!
If you set them in cold projector, the image projector in the warm state is not blurred.
Many others I tested Beamer had to be readjusted in the warm condition!

To adjust the sharpness, there is a super good test image at PJD7820HD. Here you can adjust the sharpness well to achieve good sharpness across the entire image. 100% clean but you do not get out the image. The typical DLP color fringes in different forms and colors you always, depending on the series dispersion and quality of the optics. Up to about 1 pixel width you have to accept (is not Reklamationsgtund the manufacturer!). Otherwise, however, would have the more expensive lenses not have permission. But I must also say that there are quite are also optics in this price range that are almost perfectly. You have to be lucky stop!
I was a bit shocked by this fringing on my first DLP and wanted to lodge a complaint. However, since all devices tested this phenomenon had more or less, you must accept that. The LCD Group has in some cases even more, because not 100% accurate tuning of the 3 LCD panels contours-ghosting caused.

However, one must also mention that optical errors in Full-HD to be much easier than at 720p devices! This is simply due to the smaller mirrors that conceal the error bit. Optical errors which are produced by the lens are on the mirrors, whether HD or Full HD, always equally strong. Therefore, the error on a smaller mirror as with Full HD are not as flashy as on a slightly larger mirror with HD-ready, although the quality of the lenses is equal.
Thus it can be said that HD-Ready devices need a better lens so that the subjective image quality is as good as Full HD. Thus, you have a slightly better chance to obtain a good image at full HD devices.

The brightness is ViewSonic with 3000 ANSI lumens, contrast with 15000:. 1 In my opinion, but the unit is lighter.
The difference with the Optoma HD131Xe is enormous. The image of the PJD7820 affects twice as bright (both calibrated). For projections in daylight but also reaches the ViewSonic not really matter. While you can all clearly visible, but the colors are still pale and without contours. But that is better only when many more ANSI lumens.
In light angedunkelten room the picture is however already very good and perfect in very dark conditions. The Eco mode is at 2m width for me almost too bright. If you switch the "BrilliantColor" feature on, you will even blinded (Gain 1.0 screen)!
Compared with another device under test with 2,500 lumens (Benq W750, Optoma HD131Xe) seems to me the brightness to be much stronger. The contrast and the shades are represented but very nice despite the high brightness. Only the black level could be even better, although I would classify this ViewSonic better than the Optoma.
Anyone looking for a really perfect black level, will not be able to find in this price range. The black level of PJD7820HS but above average.
One can this but with a gray screen greatly improve if you can do without some brightness.
The ViewSonic has in this respect, more than enough reserves.

The volume of PJD7820HD is unfortunately like others have written really loud and very annoying in dynamic mode by continuously changing frequency fan! In fixed Eco mode but ok.
In my unit, the fan speed in Eco mode is also quieter than the remote control. This possibly is due to a newer firmware, previously you could only via the menu get the fan quieter!
The decibel information (DB) are apparently less meaningful than the actual volume level in the dynamic mode, which is probably the most used. On 100% Lamp power all tested devices are simply useless, unless you have a party.
The ViewSonic has built two internal fans, but they are so thoughtfully placed so that they are well ventilated throughout the beamer (a fan for the lamp and a fan for the electronics / board). The fans generate just one rather loud air noise, no hum or high frequency hum. The fans run in Eco mode at about 2200-2400U / m, but that depends on the ambient temperature.
The outlet temperature is, however, very warm / hot (around 65Grad).

The menu is Benq-same structure and in addition to the pure presentation projectors contains settings for Gamma and Dynamic Black. So you require for a home theater. The My button feature is great because you can prove these freely on the remote control. The configuration options are extensive and allow außreichende adjustments. However, I have not been able to calibrate projectors clean to D65 (the Optoma HD131Xe but not).

The 3D capability is excellent and the best I've seen on DLP-Link far! Both the effect of depth, brightness, and the pop-outs are well. Flicker and ghosting there practically not at all. The lack of 3D-RF function I do not miss. I can not imagine a better 3D.
When PJD7820HD the lamp brightness can be adjusted in 3D mode with some other equipment that does not work, unfortunately. The triple flash 144Hz with only runs with native imagery, which is played at 24 fps. So either Blue-Ray with 1080 24p or via PC with the same settings. The projector then converts the pictures on 2x72Hz, ie 72fps per eye. This is absolutely flicker-free. In Sky 3D goes however not as Sky transmits in 1080i 50Hz. The glasses shutters then only in 100Hz and then you see the flickering light. 50Hz per eye are not flicker. 2D to 3D conversion support the unit, but the function is actually of no use anyway.

The rainbow effect is very different in my opinion. I've been easily susceptible and see the effect very quickly, even though it bothers me only conditionally.
The PJD7820HD is what the rainbow effect relates very well (like the Optoma HD131Xe), I see the effect rarely although I am prone. Most projectors have either one or RGBCWY RGBCYW color wheel. Only the Optoma H100 RGBCWM color wheel. Whether here the arrangement of colors play a role on the color wheel, I can not say. The speed of the color wheel is 3 times for all devices. Some projector (Benq W1070) use a RGBRGB wheel, which results in a lower lumen output result, but minimized the rainbow effect. About the usefulness of RGBRGB or RGBCYW color wheels there are lively discussions in the appropriate forums. Since I did not have a projector with RGBRGB color wheel, I can help no personal experience.

One more thing on the subject of motion blur or ghosting:
Some devices fast movements result in contour shadow or be image content for brevity time blurred.
This effect was by far the most Optoma H100, for an advertised on the homepage Optoma home theater projector, sad.
The Benq MW663 and MW523 are of slightly better, as the X1340WH.
When HD131Xe, Acer 5380BD and the Benq W750 This effect occurs rarely.
The PJD7820HD has clear contours-ghosting especially in slow movements.
One can but leave as soon as you "ViewMatch" selects as image option.
Then the ghosting is almost gone.

It is further noted that the pJD7820HD, the Benq MW663, MW523 and the Benq Acer built X1340WH actually for presentations and lacking other menu options for the home theater. Gamma and dynamic black level are completely absent in these devices. Similarly, the adjustment of individual colors is not as extensive.
The W750, HD131Xe and the Optoma H100 offer this abundant options that Optoma even by far the most configuration options. The Acer 5380BD and the ViewSonic PJD7820HD could have more choices, but they range in the normal case pending for HC.

In summary, one can say that the ViewSonic PJD7820HD apart in this price region from Optoma HD131Xe unbeaten and except for a few little things currently is one of the best full HD projector for its price.
Thus, the Optoma currently shares first place with the ViewSonic.
The imperfect optics corresponds to the price and will not be better in the competition. The appearance is now time cheap goods, otherwise the price would not be feasible. The optics roulette you with any manufacturers!
ViewSonic is the only manufacturer to a 3-year on-site warranty!

The PJD7820HD uses a 210W UHP lamp from Osram and consumes about 270W on average. A replacement bulb costs about 140, which is relatively low. The service life is also very good with up to 8000 hours. Longer stops the lamp Benq MW523 with up to 10,000 hours.
The prices of projector lamps vary greatly from the type of lamp used. Lamps with 190W are usually very low. Lamps with 210W + are usually much more expensive.
Therefore, it does make sense to look at the types of lamps used in the upcoming issue projector exactly.
It is not possible to close only by the lamp used to their life or the beamer brightness. There are projectors that deliver 3000 lumens with a 190W lamp (MW523) and projector, which with a 210W lamp only 2500 lumens afford (W750).
One should also keep the power consumption in mind. A projector with a 190W UHP lamp usually consumes less than a projector with 210W +. Add to this that Beamer are usually quieter and cooler with a 190W lamp.
Why (lamp power / lumen output) are such differences here probably know only the manufacturer .....

The difference from 720p to 1080p can be seen for me already, even if the individual pixels can not really identify with 2m picture width even at 720p. The main advantage is the much weaker form of the optical errors by the optical system for me. This point is more important for me than the higher resolution itself. Since I've had luck with the Optoma HD131Xe and the appearance is OK, I go by this reference from. Therefore, I can only make the comparison with the other tested 720p or 1280x800 projectors, and since the difference is already visible in movies, but not earth-shattering. The 200 more compared to an HD-ready device, it is worth to me, however, even if you will be the biggest difference is not in movies, but probably at presentations notice. Comparing HD131Xe and PJD7820HD the Optoma is a bit sharper.

I hope this review helps others something in their purchasing decision.
From my unit gets 4 price / performance star.
For 5 star but are a few things that would ViewSonic can do better:

- Adjustable feet (at least back a)
- A slightly better black level (the one wishes beamers but almost always ...)
- A lens cover
- Better controls for your home theater
- A quieter ventilation
- 2 HDMI ports
- A lower exhaust temperature

The Optoma HD131Xe I have also evaluated and there led the differences between the two devices.

Optoma HD131Xe:

+ Very good shadow detail
+ Less noise
+ Better menu
+ More connections
+ Adjustable legs
Not tested + 3D RF, but
+ Low power consumption

o equivalent image for ViewSonic (color fastness) by calibrating
o 3D DLP Link ViewSonic much better

- Less lumens
- Slightly lower black level
- Larger housing
- 2 years guarantee without onsite service
- No maintenance cover to the lamp
- Only 1.2 times zoom
- Illuminated remote but extremely cheap

ViewSonic PJD7820HD:

+ Extreme brightness (image visible much brighter than when HD131Xe)
+ 8000h (currently the cheapest Full HD projector with such a long lamp life)
+ Very compact housing
+ Very good black level
+ Shadow detail like the Optoma
+ Best 3D DLP-Link which I saw so far
+ 3 years warranty including on-site service!
+ Service door to the lamp
+ 1.3 x zoom
+ The remote control affects quality

o image after calibration equivalent to HD131Xe

- Noise only in Eco mode bearable (Dynamic is unpleasant, because the fan is constantly changing the speed)
- Menu is not as extensive as the Optoma
- Neither of the two rear feet can be adjusted!
- No 3D RF
- Power consumption slightly higher

If you look at the comparison so, both projectors keep such balance. But the 3-year on-site warranty and the enormous brightness and the extremely low price bundled with DVD and 3D glasses are the ViewSonic but very charming. Therefore, I can only say, everyone has to decide what he prefers projector itself. Both have advantages and disadvantages in each case. Personally, I would slightly prefer the Optoma HD131Xe for the home theater, the ViewSonic PJD7820HD for presentations. The criticized in a test light distribution of PJD7820HD of almost 60% I can not find. I can see no difference in this respect to HD131Xe. At the edge are both minimal darker than right in the middle.

I myself chose the ViewSonic PJD7820HD. The Optoma makes the better picture in terms of home cinema, but ViewSonic has convinced me because of the really impressive brightness. Since I take the small disadvantages (only 1 HDMI, louder, slight motion blur, less adjustment) gladly accept. Brightness You can never have enough, because the projector lamp quickly lose luminosity anyway. And so much worse the image of PJD7820HD is not! If one has no comparison to another projector, you can tell the difference not guaranteed.
