WD My Personal Cloud Cloud Storage 4TB ((8.9 cm (3.5 inches), USB 3.0, NAS) white (Personal Computers)

Customer Review

Now that I have only operated for years a Linux and a Windows Home Server, I was looking for a cheap and energy-efficient replacement. Since I no longer needed the additional features offered by a complete server, I had to make searching for a very simple NAS to my data in the home network at your disposal.

The reviews for the WD My cloud were indeed very mixed, but try making Kluch .. :-)

I use it as a backup drive and to provide films, series and music for several XBMCs (Raspberry Pi and ATV2).

The decor was simple:

1. FW Update - takes a while but went automatically
2. User set.
3. Shares set.
4. DLNA and iTunes server issued.
5. turned ssh.

All over the web interface. All additional software I have not even installed. I only need a simple Samba shares which I can mount directly into the XBMCs and PCs.

In order for the unspeakable "illuminate" the plate, which probably ensures the most negative reviews here, is shut, I then put myself via ssh on the plate and dropped the following commands:

/etc/init.d/wdmcserverd stop
/etc/init.d/wdphotodbmergerd stop

# Update-rc.d wdphotodbmergerd Disable
# Update-rc.d wdmcserverd Disable

The first two commands to stop the built-WD indexing the drive. The following commands make sure that they will no longer be started after a reboot process.

Then it was time to copy. With the speed I had really not expected at such an affordable drive.

My server previously was indeed the case of small files rapidly, but was also equipped with a desktop CPU and also ate the power of a desktop computer.

The WD creates in my entire 1000 network with large files (from 100MB) at a speed of 86MB / s.
With photos (3-8MB) still good 35-45 MB / s.
And in many small files (1kb - 100kb) still up to 20MB.

Mind you: TYPING! Really awesome - with this performance I did not expect really for the price.

Access works have always without problems. Neither XBMCs nor the PCs have problems with the drive.

Hibernate also works. I'm excited!

Conclusion: do not place used services, clearances as SMB mount, use 1000 network and the thing ran like hell!

PS

I have read many reviews of problems with the mount of shares. But this is not due to the WD. That's more of a Windows problem.
A little tip from me: let Each boat mount the drives instead of the check "Reconnect at logon restore" to use. Has proven in years as the better option. Windows can not just ...

How do you do that:

Open Notepad and the following entries:

echo off
ping 127.0.0.1 -n 10> nul
net use DRIVE: \\ IP-address \ NAME_DES_SHARE PASSWORD / USER: USER / persistent: no

So for a share with the name of music, the IP address of 192.168.1.2 from WD, as drive F and the User XYZ:

net use f: \\ 192.168.1.2 \ Music mypassword / USER: xyz / persistent: no

If you now have all the shares that you want to mount registered, you save the whole thing as "netzstart.bat" and adds it to autostart. Finished!

Now all drives are mounted automatically every time you start and then it works well!

UPDATE:

So, now the board is indeed a few months in use and I wanted to give a quick update times:

The board has not made me a single problem.
She sleeps when it is not needed.
She wakes up when it is needed (takes about 5 seconds).
After several FW updates she is even a bit faster and creates for large files (> 1GB) 95-96MB.
Trailer or dropouts, I had been none.
Reboots were initiated by me only with FW updates.
I'm still excited.

Among the many negative reviews:

If you read them, you often read between the lines that the problems lie in the network: Wi-Fi, etc ... DLAN
I can only conclude with me that the board is running without any problems and very fast.
I'm afraid the problems but often sit in front of computer :-) Sorry, you must say yes times.
Network is just a subject in itself and not everyone can or may probably deal with it.
But a NAS, regardless of the manufacturer happens rarely Plug & Play.
Nor do I believe that a NAS from another manufacturer in the same LAN then suddenly super runs.

Tip I find the USB experts who applaud your xxTB plates to the USB port of the WD and then complain about the speed of copying.
Let 's quite silly: What are we doing there?
We cut to a not particularly fast USB Port a plate off (right USB3 performance requires a bit more CPU power than most NAS drives offer).
Then we copy the data from the external disk, via the WD to our PC.
In order then to copy from your PC back on the same LAN back to WD.
Because that's the way to go then the data.
We will preload the LAN so twice and the WD triple (USBWDPCWD)
This is of course a great performance in presumably about 54g WLAN :-)

The USB disk is a thing of the PC and then copied from there to the WD.
So the data is over 1x LAN.

To Peformance over WAN:

Is apparently not clear to everyone that the data will be assessed via the own DSL connection.
Means: You have perhaps 16,000 / 100,000 / 200,000 in the download but how is your upload ???
And this is used when uploading your accesses of the way on the plate !!! When DSL 16,000: 1Mbit :-( If the cable is with happiness: 6Mbit.
Then just adds that many have probably not set the firewall on your router.
Then your router - - Thus, the request from the mobile phone first to WD USA then goes to WD and then back to the router - to WD USA - for mobile.
