Katniss Everdeen lives in the twelfth district of a country that was once America. It is the poorest district. Katniss and her family survive just as well and just because she and her best friend poach the in the woods behind the fence.
The story begins on the day of harvest. The date will be selected at the 24 tribute, two from each district, for the hunger games. The Hunger Games are a kind of reality show. Unlike Big Brother, it goes here but for survival. Only one can emerge alive from them. The concept originated as a punishment for a rebellion, which led the districts against the Capitol and rich in the 13th district was obliterated. The Games are now intended as a memorial, that you can not defeat the Capitol. So a boy and girls between 12 and 18 years each year are elected from each district. And every year another piece of paper with the name of each is added. Katniss 'sister Prim, who is straight times twelve should, therefore, be reasonably sure' her name is finally only once in Lostopf. Nevertheless, it is drawn. Katniss does not hesitate to take their place. So be it and Peeta Mellark, the baker's son, brought to the capital.
After a make-over follow interviews and training sessions in order to be prepared, but also so that the game maker and the audience get to know them. Because the most popular Tribute will have an easier once they are in the arena. You can, if they have enough sponsors to get gifts sent, decide in some cases, between life and death.
Katniss knows how to hunt and good with a bow and arrow. But the tributes from the wealthier districts have their whole lives preparing for their existence as a tribute and are therefore correspondingly bloodthirsty and ruthless. Can Katniss arrive against them?
Assessment
I have long wondered whether I should read the 'Hunger Games'. The book I had very often in my hand before I then covered it back at the last moment. Ultimately, I decided to wait for the film and then to make a decision. The film I liked so damn good and the 'Hunger Games' but their way have found in my paws. And ich.liebe.sie!
As described, it comes to a live TV show, in which the Tribute are brought into an arena. The environment may be all 'of a desert landscape to the Tundra. All districts have to watch, but only the rich people in the Capitol really find pleasure in the carnage that is shown. While especially the outer districts struggling for daily survival, one lives the high life in the Capitol. The Hunger Games form a pretty and especially dramatic entertainment for them. I find this idea just awesome. The fun, the mankind has on reality shows, it really is not very far-fetched that a show like the Hunger Games could occur under certain conditions. Just think of Bread & Games in ancient Rome.
This also fits very well that the attributes must all find a role. A niche in which they fit, so that they attract the attention of sponsors. So there is the rebellious, the cute or hopelessly in love 'But I do not want to reveal too much ;-)
Collins' Characters I loved. Anyone who knows my reviews knows I loathe stereotyped heroes and heroines. Katniss and Peeta are everything but. Katniss is very focused. She has one goal in mind 'win. Her life was hard before. There was no time for romance, weakness or girlish. She's stubborn, she's full of surprises. Peeta's just a nice guy. One of the good guys. I think you can not help but like it and if it would like to go with Twilight Team Edward and Team Jacob, I would definitely not the Team Peeta and Team Gale in. Gale is Katniss' best friend. He is very similar to her. In my opinion too similar. Katniss is tough enough as it does not need another friend who additionally reinforced. But I may be biased. In this case, would be against Peeta in my head and my heart every other boy lose.
Suzanne Collins' writing style is interesting and easy to read. It uses pretty set constellations and brings the events over fast and crisp. The book made me very uneasy. Although I already knew what would happen, but I found it all very exciting and yet could not stop reading.
The cover of Scholastic Books, I find, however atrocious. It shows the letter of HG and behind somewhat faded Katniss' brooch with the Mockingjay on a black background. I like the other versions, where only Katniss' brooch can be seen on a black background, a lot better.
To film is to say that I have rarely seen one that is as close approached to the book. The actors were very well chosen and if you read the description of the characters in the book, fit all performers look after in the roles. In addition, no significant events have been omitted or to sealed. In fact, some conversations from the book were taken over completely the same for the film. Something always makes me pretty happy. However, one has to say that there a lot less violent things work in film, as in the book. At the end of the film had some characters still various parts of the body that have long belonged to the past in the book.
Conclusion
Very good, original and mega brilliant book! Five stars and an Amazing! (CK)
