The color foils are wide at the widest point of the usable area about 7.6 cm (3 inches) and can thus be on midsize Speedlights (z. B. a Canon Speedlite 430EX II attach quickly and easily. For larger Speedlights precise alignment is required ; for complete coverage of a Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT, however, the color films are a bit too small.
The attachment of the color films on the flash unit is preferably carried out with a rubber band. The included rubber band fits very tightly to typical flash units and keeps its large contact surface color film quite firm. If you intend to change the color films often quickly, one uses better other common household rubber bands.
By attaching the bent tabs of the color film on the sides of the flash unit the ink sheet runs in a certain bow before the flash head and is not directly on the lens on. This arrangement is quite desirable to counteract excessive heating of the color film something.
The selection of effects filters including nine pure colors with high color saturation (026 Bright Red, 777 Rust, 767 Oklahoma Yellow, 010 Medium Yellow, 089 Moss Green, 116 Medium Blue-Green, 079 Just Blue, 799 Special KH Lavender and 797 Deep Purple) which cover the entire color wheel reasonable. In addition, five mixed colors are provided with lower color saturation (008 Dark Salmon, Chocolate 156, 728 Steel Green, 127 Smokey Pink and 328 Follies Pink).
Compared to the effect filters the selection of correction filters is disappointing. (The following reasons apply equally to the similar Color Correction Filter Kit.) To reduce the color temperature are three filters included (204 Full CT Orange, CT Orange 205 Half and 206 Quarter CT Orange). The major correction filter 223 Eighth CT Orange, which is required to align the flash (approximately 6,000 K) to daylight (approximately 5,200 K), is unfortunately missing.
To increase the color temperature only one filter film is provided (202 Half CT Blue). This correction filter is actually meant to adjust the light of incandescent lamps (about 3200 K) in the light of daylight lamps (approximately 4,300 K). On a flash unit with a color temperature of about 6,000 K, there are contrast color for this film no meaningful application as a correction filter, because the color temperature is raised to about 10,000 K. This color film is thus practically be regarded only as an effect filter. Meaningful filter to increase the color temperature would be against 218 Eighth CT Blue and perhaps 203 Quarter CT Blue to match the flash, for example to the ambient light in the shade; but these filters are not included in the Universal Lighting Filter Kit.
The last correction filter included (244 Plus Green) is used to adapt the flash of the green cast of fluorescent lighting. It is the most powerful version of the available for this purpose correction filters.
Finally, a diffuser film (129 Heavy Frost) is also included. The effectiveness of this diffuser is limited by the very short distance from the flash unit.
