Onkyo TX-NR509 5.1 AV Receiver (3D ready, audio streaming, iPhone / iPod via USB) (Electronics)

Customer Review

I was until recently owner of a 5.1. Sony amplifier which already accompanied me for several years and did good service. However, it bothered me the missing or insufficient Lipsync function of the amplifier (there is nothing worse than earlier tone) and the problem is that the volume in passages was often silent. If you turned louder, fell one at the next film explosion almost ears off.
Therefore, I decided, a Onkyo TX-NR509 to buy, because it supposedly no longer have the problems. Of course I was interested in the network function, as you so no additional or similar media player needs to hear mp3s over the network are running.

I could see the AV receiver now extensively test and no longer give him. He solved satisfactorily My problems. An adjustable in 10ms steps, Lipsync function for each channel every wish (by the way, you can set all the settings separately for each channel). The quiet passages also belong to the past, thanks to Audyssey. No matter how loud you will, Audyssey regulates impressive surround sound as you want it ... in a harmonious coexistence of all the boxes. As are worlds between Onkyo and my old amplifier. The Onkyo convinces with various setting options that can allocate the appropriate volume distribution each film. Because you can do it in the Quick Menu, allows the fast times do the film.

I also expected a reasonable calibration function (was spoiled by my old amplifier) that filled the NR509 promptly. An included micro that is sonicated of funny noises Test, reduces settling times up to 2-3 minutes. The remote convinced. For each channel, the remote control can operate a different device (available via a code table).

The only thing I have to complain a little, is the comprehensiveness of the manual. The reader is informed something amateurish about the different Klangmodis. For example, stands with Dolby ProLogic II, that the mode is good for 2-channel sources as a virtual multi-channel sound is produced. However, this mode is also present in 5.1 sources. You have to piece together, that he might not only virtually, the source added, but these processes only with Pro Logic then. That a 5.1 source you can also mess with such eye candies of stereo signals, proved my old amplifier, if you mistakenly switched to such a mode. As far as I've tested the Onkyo, I suppose now that he adjusts the mode depending on the source signal. The results then by some logic, but an educated guess is it anyway and I buy reluctant pig in a poke. I would have liked a few sentences to the operating instructions, because I'd like to know what the amplifier so rumkodiert the approach to my source signal. However, this is criticism at a high level.

The network feature and the USB mode is super. Front USB flash drive infected or selected server access or network shares and already let all popular audio formats to play (NO 5.1 wav). Remote control via the PC but I have not yet tested, because you can control everything pretty on the screen or TV (all menus can be displayed via HDMI on a TV that helps especially in networks and Internet radio). There is also a web interface, so that it can be accessed via a browser, but this refers only to network settings and radio stations that you can change it. I hope that even the network shares to be integrated, so that you as the music clearly control via smartphone can (although that is not absolutely necessary, the control over the display is quite well thought out). A firmware update I have done over the network function already successfully (nice feature), but probably only little things have been improved.

Overall we have to say really, the settings and functions are well thought out and extremely useful. For example, there is a surround mode for games. This pulls the acoustic action from frontal center more into the room, so you rather have the feeling to be part of the action. From these cute gadgets there is a lot, so that this amplifier is prepared for a lot of situations and problems. Only the price is by the new network function slightly stronger if this is worth it, everyone must decide for themselves.

Update August 17, 2011

I have the receiver now for quite a while and would like to add a few more experiences that I've done.
A single shortcoming thing I noticed is that the Onkyo can play on the network function no multichannel wav files (I had up until a different number, because I then reproduced the files on a media player and as the incoming DTS signal is running smoothly) ,
Meanwhile, I have yet done the receiver completely to the center of my equipment and everything wired via HDMI. The HDMI control works with my Sony LCD super. The LCD now has just one AV channel, to the recievers. About the HDMI Trough function of Onkyo on the respective connected equipment (Bluray, Media Player, console, etc.) to this channel by (even when switched off). If the amplifier is on standby running the sound through the TV. I turn the receiver on, the LCD will mute and the Onkyo accepts the sonication. Similarly, the common ON / OFF works great. All functions of the Onkyo are now set as an overlay of the channel. What surprised me is that the volume is coupled to the TV, ie press louder on the television sets only the receiver volume, fine thing.

Onkyo has also fulfilled my hopes. There are now Onkyo even a free smartphone tool for all modern network receiver (for Android, is called "Onkyo Remote"). While that is still in the beta phase, but is now running almost perfectly. Thus one has as it were the monitor in your pocket. The connection is logically via WLAN. To be able to replace a remote control (does well at the table when the receiver disappears behind the sofa and you have herumfuchteln in the air with the remote control). On the other hand you can now at the table beautifully with the smartphone in the radio or on the media server for music search and play them. In addition, you can see the music you own on the Android also has on the receiver stream (By the way also works to stream via Windows Media Player 11 super (playback on ...)).

(Side note to the Android app: you can turn on the receiver so that only if you have also turned him with the tool also keep checking the firmware update Onkyo, Onkyo's all quickly namely taking care of his sheep..)

I can therefore only conclude: The amplifier was one of my best purchases in recent years, I do not want to miss him and would now want even awarded a sixth star for smartphone control.
