After I had taken the trouble and pulled a LAN cable to the repeater, I have the repeater in the LAN bridge mode added (same SSID and the same network key as the router, but different radio channels), everything works as expected. WLAN client devices connect to the respective strongest stations, wireless roaming is reliable; neither of the two devices had to be restarted again since then. This improves my vote for the repeater to two 4 star.
