First, the technical data for the two spades.
The old model:
Fiskars Ergonomic Garden Spade, pointed (131410)
Weight according to Fiskars: 1900g / My copy weighs about 2050g
Length: 125cm
Working angle: 26 °
The new model:
Fiskars Xact Garden Spade, pointed L (131 483)
Weight according to Fiskars: 1900g / My copy weighs about 1960g
Length: 120cm
Working angle: 7 °
As can be seen from the technical data of the new spade in the L version was 5cm shorter build than the old model. The upper part of the stem is now made of plastic in order to minimize the weight. Nevertheless, there is only a weight saving of approximately 100g.
The new sheet has continued to be the same size. By stamping but it should be stiffer than its predecessor. In addition, the impact is a little non-slip by three holes. As ugly I feel the changed working angle. The old form with 26 ° I liked much better. The plastic coating on the handle was made redundant when the new spade. When you're working with gloves on but plays the minor role.
Overall I give the new spade five stars because it is well done. Nevertheless, I like the old spade better due to size and shape. I'll probably be using the new spade mainly when I have to work at full strength to dig eg thick roots or large rocks. Here the stiffer blade should be able to play to its strength. For normal work the old model is more appropriate.
For worth mentioning, I think even the price difference. The old model is much cheaper than the new Xact spade. This may be the passage of time but change.
