Customer Review

Since 2011 I photograph with Sony DSLMs, starting with a NEX-5N, which was about a year later replaced by a NEX-6. That was in spite of the same sensor and consistent image quality, a clear improvement (even if the NEX-5N was very good), because the outstanding electronic viewfinder as well as significantly faster hybrid AF I do not want to miss since then. At the NEX-6 there is really hardly any complaints.

The NEX-6 I bought the 16-50er kit lens. This ended but after the first 100 shots quickly permanently in the cabinet. Its advantage: It is really compact. But that's about it. The image quality is not bad, but also not really good; very soft to the outer edge, and in particular the distortion at the short end are horrendous and let yourself with the appropriate DxO profile not completely disappear. I did it while still, I thought, but to use it again when it really comes down to compactness, but in practice it is simply nothing (or I use then prefer another camera as my RX100). A bad investment. My advice, whether NEX-6 or Alpha 6000: Buy some only the body and then a sensible look to even if it is considerably more expensive dear. Exception: You will receive the kit very low and can then sell the 16-50 reasonably well.

For a long time the Sony 18-200 (without "LE") the standard optics of my choice. For a superzoom that's really not bad; very sharp in the center, at the edge of acceptable, beautiful colors and low (at least manageable) distortion. Gradually, however, it was too big for me and hard, so I replaced it some time ago by the very, very good Sony / Zeiss 16-70 (see my review on this objective). In my view, the ideal standard lens for every NEX and the Alpha 6000; sharp right into the corners, optimally with continuous shutter 4 quite bright, brilliant colors, little distortion, with OSS and of the proportions ago Pairing a NEX or Alpha 6000 bodysuit. Caution: The Zeiss 16-70 there are also bundled with the Alpha 6000; Sounds like a bargain, but this kit is currently more expensive than the items.

Since I like to with powerful prime lenses (including Sony 50 / 1.8, Sony / Zeiss 24 / 1.8, Sigma 19 / 2.8 and Sony 30 / 3.5 Macro) work and also gladly times a UWW-Zoom (Sony 10-18) used, so frequently Change Lenses came lately the request on to a second body to go to save yourself a lot of the lens changes. Especially in DSLM world does not cost a second body so the world and requires relatively little extra space in the camera bag. But you win a lot: Less missed photo opportunities, less "breakage" (an objective change, for example in the city crowds's always an element of risk), less risk of contamination of the sensor, and a "backup" has also the same wherever you go.
So I asked myself the question: Once again a NEX-6 purchase (identical operation of bodysuits has advantages), or better yet the newer Alpha 6000 grab (the New irritates course already)? It then became the Alpha 6000, especially since the price difference for a NEX-6 body is not 100 euros.

After a few hundred photos I prefer a balance and see in some places with the NEX-6:

(++) Image quality.

The image quality of the Alpha 6000 is really great class and at least on a level with the NEX-sixth Only my Canon EOS 6D with matching optics (eg the 70-200 / 4 L IS USM) surpasses them again, but this comparison is already on the pixel density forth unfair (20 MP full frame sensor against 24 MP APS-C sensor means almost twice as large pixel density, respectively almost half pixel size in the Alpha 6000!). The prerequisite is that quality optics as the Sony / Zeiss 16-70 or good fixed focal lengths are used. The 16-50er kit zoom is already on the NEX-6 is not exactly brilliant and really does not fit a fortiori to even higher resolution Alpha 6000. The high pixel density of the Alpha 6000 is now time extreme demands on the resolving power of a lens, the the cheap kit lens can not meet. Actually to understand why Sony offers this Bundle at all. (That there is another way, proves the Canon EOS-M, where less than 300 euros for a camera not as compact but optically and mechanically excellent 18-55er Kit Zoom will be sold for dumping price of temporarily.)

The JPEG engine of the Alpha 6000 have to get used something. My first pictures with standard settings were first, let's say so, somewhat disappointing, partly because I was out already at higher ISO ranges (1600-3200). The setting "High ISO NR: Normal" is certainly too aggressive to me; Although the noise is very effective reduced, but at the expense of attention to detail (as were, for example, the honeycomb of a car radiator with ISO 2500 on the verge of drowning in a single "porridge", and despite the use of ultra-sharp Zeiss 24 / 1.8 ). Only one setting to "low" brought acceptable results. The standard parameters for saturation and sharpness are for my taste to neutral (and I'm certainly not a supporter of settings such as "Vivid" or similar). Allowed for halfway "crisp" images here without fear are gone quite clearly into positive territory, and so slowly you approach the personal ideal of.

Anyway, I am an advocate of the RAW format and develop my pictures fundamentally in DxO Optics Pro. The JPEG settings then do not play a major role more, but are only for the camera-internal preview (or if you take directly send or upload a photo "out of camera" want) of interest. And in terms of RAW development, I must say that the results are absolutely convincing. However: The attention to detail at high ISO remains at RAW processing (in particular with the outstanding PRIME-noise reduction of DxO) still very high, but I have (despite almost identical laboratory measurements of NEX-6 and Alpha 6000) the impression that the NEX-6 high ISOs an ounce under control better. In dim light, I will therefore probably more frequently grab again for NEX-6.

Incidentally, the 24 MP of the Alpha 6000 sound natural, compared with the 16 MP of the NEX-6, first time really well. And indeed, the photos an enormous amount of detail. In practice, the difference with the NEX-6, however, is not soooo huge, above all things for people who usually their photos anyway just on the screen or on relatively small print formats look (to about A2). A real advantage brings more pixels really only people who make the often Crops and / or large-format prints.

(+) Operator

Although the electronic viewfinder of the Alpha 6000 solves less than in the NEX-6 (1.44 vs. 2 million pixels), but subjectively I notice no difference. Both viewfinders are simply outstanding and are in no way inferior to optical viewfinders.

The displays of both cameras are identical in terms of size, resolution and agility.

The menu structure of the Alpha 6000 is significantly clearer and thus clearly better than the NEX-sixth

The Alpha 6000 has three user-programmable hardware knobs ("C1" in addition to the trigger, "C2" and "Fn" on the back). The NEX-6 has a freely assignable "Fn" button "next to the shutter button and two buttons next to the display, of which the upper but firmly with" occupied Menu "and only the lower is configurable. In addition, during the three Alpha 6000 directions of the directional pad and the central button of the directional pad for customization provable (in the NEX-6 will not do). point for the Alpha 6000. In addition, the dedicated keys make sense, but until the button next to the shutter, otherwise arranged as in the NEX-6. So be it, a total of the essential key functions halfway identical, so that I can arrange myself with.

Beautiful is also the possibility to remotely control the camera via wireless / app (I have not tried it yet with the Alpha, but I know from the NEX-6) or images to Send / Upload to bring their mobile phones. For occasional use what is offered is sufficient. Frequent users might disturb the somewhat sluggish handling.

There are at least three memory locations for configurations where a configuration actually includes all recording-related parameters of the camera settings. Thus, for example a standard setting with Aperture Priority (A Mode), Auto ISO, etc. AWB outdoors in relatively good light, and a second mode with M, 1/30 sec., Aperture 4.0, 800 ISO, WB etc. Create bulb for interior shots in artificial light and quickly switch between them. You can see the current camera settings at any time by calling the menu item "memory" to store the memories of one (or more). For quick retrieval of a configuration is necessary to bring the mode dial to the "MR" and then gets the right choice. As long as one remains in "MR", the settings are retained (but can of course be changed). If you adjust the mode dial (eg "A"), you have again the settings that had been in this dial position previously. This is really a great thing and is not offered by the NEX-6. Clear advantage Alpha 6000th

The Switch is in the Alpha 6000, unfortunately, the selection of the desired focal point, which is provided at the NEX-6 significantly faster (, they have laid the "Object Tracking" on the bottom button next to the display: Press the button briefly to take subject in the center , press, select final trimming, finished). When Alpha 6000 I have to change only in the selective focus mode (which via CustomButton course can also go quite fast) and then move the focus point per pad. Just takes a little longer. It would be nice also if the focal points resizable would (or would be small from the outset). The relatively large dots tends the camera, especially when many Motif details with deeper staggering to occasional failure focus.
*** UPDATE 21/01/2015: As mentioned in a comment (! Thanks for the hint), it is possible with the Alpha 6000, the "AF lock" (identical to "object tracking" in the NEX-6) to to lay the central button of the directional pad. Then it is just like the NEX-6 possible relatively quickly adjust the focus on a specific subject detail. Even more beautiful and intuitive would naturally focus area selection via touch screen, as it does for example in the NEX-5N, or Canon EOS M, but neither known nor Alpha NEX-6 6000 have a touchscreen. Maybe there's the time again for one of the successor ... ***

I also have to say that my Alpha 6000 (with firmware 1.00) three times already is "crashed" during operation. The display will then immediately after taking a picture something like "camera error, please power cycle". Off and on does not help, only briefly removing the battery. Something I do not know of the NEX-6. Photos are not gone my case fortunately lost, and I'm assuming that future firmware updates to bring more stability and will solve this little problem.
*** Update 21/01/2015: Since I upgraded just before Christmas on the firmware 1.10 have occurred (several hundred shots since) no longer crashes. The problem seems to be as hoped eliminated with the new firmware. ***

(+) Speed

The AF speed with phase AF-grade lenses (which are nowadays almost all available for Sony E-mount) is very high, but is still not quite at a decent DSLR with a fast lens zoom (my 6D with USM lenses In any case much faster). Nevertheless, what is offered for everyday life, for "Action" as playing children or pets enough, usually slack off.

The response to operator inputs and the storage and continuous shooting speed are to be considered at the level of very good entry-level to semi-professional DSLRs and so as.

NEX-6 and Alpha 6000 play here in the same league. Subjectively, I notice no difference.

(+) And haptic processing

Even though the "Tank" image of a Canon G1X or G15 is not quite: The Alpha 6000 feels good and makes a high quality, solid impression. The same levels as the NEX-sixth Really good: No labbe engined rubber covering the USB and HDMI ports, but a solid plastic flap with good fit. So to do that.

(+/-) Equipment

In this area actually only a few left to be desired. Sony has meanwhile given up after all, artificially restrict the AE Bracketing (in the NEX-6 had to be, if you wanted to make more than 3 shots with 0.7 EV distance, still buy an additional app; in the Alpha 6000 is as from the outset considerably more).

The app capability of the Alpha 6000 is, as with the NEX-6, an appropriate means to the camera to extend special functions. But beware, not every app is available for each camera. For the NEX-6 I eg. An app that several images in immediate succession shoots in low light and this offset to a noise-optimized intake, which works just fine. This app is not available for the Alpha 6000. Perhaps this is also already a standard functionality of the Alpha 6000, which I have not yet discovered (I work almost exclusively in the PASM).
*** UPDATE 21/01/2015: As mentioned in a comment (! Thanks for the hint), requires the Alpha 6000 for this feature, no separate app more, but has been "built" it. It can be switched on via the ISO setting ("Multi Frame-RM" above "ISO Auto"). Slight downside: If necessary, must first be converted to "JPEG" manually "RAW & JPEG" and are intended primarily for the use of features in mind, again on "RAW & JPEG" return (which is simply unnecessary; the camera may select "RAW & JPEG "easily" overriden ", so that there is no danger, the reset on" RAW & JPEG "to forget). ***

Is often criticized the lack of separate charger. Sure, the people have rights; with such a camera you'd expect that in the delivery. But a hell Aufreger it is not. Third-party there are cheap (and usually good) Bundles of replacement batteries and compact chargers, which can be operated both at the net, on board of a car and USB. So a bundle I had already bought for the NEX-6, and thankfully the battery type of the Alpha 6000 is indeed the same. For me, therefore, one way or another is no problem and no killer criterion.

As a major drawback and completely incomprehensible but I feel the omission of the (at the NEX-6 still existing) electronic 3D level. With the NEX-6 I have come to appreciate as a valuable tool, as a held in the balance camera already minimized crooked horizons and converging verticals in the recording. Alternatively, you can at the Alpha 6000 Although Display a grid, but a full replacement is definitely not (at very dark / night designs and motifs without horizontal and vertical lines is to begin with the grid very little).

Conclusion: Who is happy with its NEX-6, will, if at all, only a few reasons, these (maybe with great loss) to sell and switch to the Alpha 6000. The NEX-6 is still just an excellent camera and on the amount of time.
But if new einsteigt or how I want to buy a second body, does nothing wrong when he / she reaches equal to slightly more modern Alpha 6000. However, he / she should, depending on the photographic experience, a more or less large learning curve to plan (even if it is 6000 not an overly complicated to use camera is in Alpha) before he / she photographed important, irretrievable events so. Although clear, this applies in principle for each camera, but just at the Alpha 6000, the "JPEG out of the box" results not convincing at first, as described above.

*** Update on 01/27/2014: I have to complete an experience that I now had to make only: About three weeks after I placed the camera with freshly charged battery to the side and have since not been used, the battery was just so fully that while the camera started, but immediately showed the orange battery icon and after a few minutes and went out. So it seems a significant battery "drain" to enter despite "doing nothing". In more recent reviews we read that someone has already done the same experience, so it is not an isolated incident or a defective battery or camera copy.
I know that such an extreme by any other camera. Neither the NEX-6 nor the RX100 Mk I from the same manufacturer exhibit this behavior. Their batteries are after a few months of storage even sometimes empty (probably a combination of battery self-discharge and low power, the camera constantly "attracts"), but as it takes months, not a few weeks, and usually there is not so far since cameras are indeed used but more or less regularly.
I mention this here simply times, because it is worth knowing in any case, and for some people seems to be even a KO criterion. To me, that would certainly be no reason to return the camera. I have 4 batteries for two cameras (NEX-6, Alpha 6000), and once a month spendieren the Alpha 6000 or both a fresh battery, or before a major shoot to remember to check the inserted battery, although slightly annoying, but reasonable. Is expected to store the camera without the battery be no sensible alternative, since then most likely the individual settings will be lost (not've tried). It is also quite possible that this problem will be solved by a firmware update, or at least alleviated. ***

Thank you have persevered this far. I hope my review is helpful to you in making your decision. If so, I am pleased with a click on the Yes button.
