When someone asks me for a good introduction to the world of period dramas, I always recommend the BBC's Emma. The characters are well-staffed, the costumes fantastic (and, let's face it, the costumes are very important for the right feeling for period dramas), the setting is fantastic and there are pitfalls of time stated in a very friendly manner. I can watch this series repeatedly and discover new things. Sometimes I would like to analyze the role of women and their problems at this time, sometimes enjoy the fashion, sometimes to think about the contemporary world view and sometimes just enjoy the romance. Emma's naivety and character transformation are presented beautifully, her father is converted fantastic and especially the disgraced women are shown here particularly poignant. My only complaint: Mr. Knightley is well cast as an actor, but the age difference is circumnavigated and not really shown also from her picture. But that does not stop me from enjoying this series every few months again.
